Indian origin U.S. citizen duped by Iranian couple at airport; one arrested
Delhi police have arrested an Iranian woman for allegedly duping an Indian origin U.S. citizen at Indira Gandhi International Airport, an officer said on Thursday.
The accused, Fatemah Akbari, 52, was arrested from a guest house in Saket, south Delhi, while her husband, Mojtaba Zolfaghari, who was also allegedly involved in the crime, is at large.
The complainant, Baldev Singh, 70, said that he was approached by the Iranian couple and their child on June 20, near Departure Gate 7, around 10.45 p.m., and was requested to show an Indian currency note to their child, as he was insisting on it. Mr. Singh said he handed over ₹50 note to their child, which he returned. The couple also requested to show U.S. dollars to their child, and he handed over a bundle of notes, which was also returned.
Mr. Singh said that when he later checked the bundle, he realised that U.S. currency notes had been deceitfully replaced by Indian currency, and he had been cheated of $700.
Following the complaint by Mr. Singh, the police checked the CCTV footage and the car the Iranian family was travelling and found them living in Saket.
During interrogation, Ms. Fatemah said they were facing a financial crisis and, to make easy money, targeted foreign nationals in Lajpat Nagar, Connaught Place, Khan Market, and the airport.
The couple has been living in India under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees status, the officer added.

Acting on intelligence inputs, he was picked up from the Ahmedpur Jat Road area and found in possession of fake Indian currency worth ₹1.05 lakh. The ATS had apprehended mastermind Gajendra Yadav—a railway employee—from Pilkhuwa in Hapur district along with his associate Siddharth Jha. Acting on specific inputs, the duo was intercepted near Bhojpur Road while attempting to deliver ₹3.9 lakh in counterfeit currency. A subsequent raid at a rented flat in Dinesh Nagar Colony uncovered their printing hub, yielding sophisticated equipment including security paper, printers, dies, and Photoshop design files used to mimic genuine notes. A third accused, Vijay Veer Chaudhary of Bulandshahr, was arrested for supplying watermark and thread-featured paper sourced from for the counterfeit production. Gajendra Yadav, originally from Gajouri village in Bulandshahr and stationed at Lakhan Railway Station, ran the operation from Pilkhuwa with the help of Siddharth Jha from New Delhi. The gang distributed fake currency using social media to connect with buyers across western Uttar Pradesh. With the arrest of Anas Ahmad, all four identified members of the racket are now in custody. A case has been registered under IPC and BNSS provisions at the ATS police station in Lucknow, and further legal proceedings are ongoing. 25 Punjab jail officials suspended as government cracks down on systemic corruption, drug trade
CHANDIGARH: In a major move against corruption and drug rackets operating within prisons across the state, the Punjab Government has suspended 25 officials, including three Deputy Superintendents and two Assistant Superintendents of the Jails Department. 'Following reports of irregularities and drug-related activities within jails, the government said the action was to end corruption and drug networks. The big action was taken as per information received about corruption and drug networks in jails,' said an official on condition of anonymity. He further stated that the suspensions aim to bring about systemic reform in prison management and ensure greater transparency and efficiency. 'This action is expected to significantly improve the functioning of jails and promote a more accountable system,' he added. Sources said that in the last few years, there have been multiple instances of gangsters operating drug and criminal syndicates using mobile phones inside prisons, with visitors devising innovative methods to smuggle contraband and jail staff allegedly facilitating the entry of drugs and other banned items. In a recent case, jailed pastor Bajinder Singh was found in possession of a mobile phone and cash inside his cell at the Mansa district jail. A fresh case under the Prisons Act has been registered against him. Singh is currently serving a life sentence for the rape of a woman in 2018.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued three Sri Lankan nationals who had been abandoned on a sandbar near Adam's Bridge, off the coast of Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu, officials said on Saturday. According to the Coastal Security Group Police , the trio had set off from Sri Lanka in an unidentified boat, which dropped them off on the sandbar located in Indian waters. "Three Sri Lankans who had set off from Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi (Tamil Nadu) in an unidentified boat were dropped off at a sandbar by Adam's Bridge near Dhanushkodi. The Indian Coast Guard rescued them, brought them to Dhanushkodi and handed them over to the Coastal Security Group Police.
