The New Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid Has a Huge Total Range

Diesel engines used to be the de facto choice for Europeans interested in covering long trips without the hassle of frequent refueling. Once the efficiency king, diesel has largely fallen out of favor due to stringent emissions regulations in the EU. However, Toyota is confident it has found a better alternative: plug-in hybrids. The new RAV4 PHEV is claimed to deliver diesel-like range, with the added benefit of all-electric cruising.
The sixth-generation
RAV4
in plug-in hybrid flavor can cover more than 839 miles (1,350 kilometers) with a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery. This represents an improvement of 31 miles (50 kilometers) over the previous PHEV model. Toyota targets a purely electric range of 93 miles (150 kilometers) in Japan, though it expects an EPA-rated figure of just 50 miles (80 kilometers) for the version sold in North America.

The significant discrepancy stems from the different test cycles, with the EPA's considered more stringent than Japan's JC08. In Europe and other regions that rely on the WLTP standard, the compact crossover can be driven for 62 miles (100 kilometers) before the 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine kicks in.
Toyota
doesn't specify the gas tank's capacity, but we know the previous-generation RAV4 PHEV could carry 14.5 gallons or 55 liters.
The extra range is made possible by boosting the battery pack's capacity from 18.1 kWh to 22.7 kWh. Although fairly boxy, the redesigned body is more aerodynamic than before. Toyota claims it further optimized the front and rear spoilers and restyled the wheels for better airflow.
Other benefits of the new PHEV include an increase in combined output from 302 to 320 horsepower for the new-for-2026
GR Sport
, while towing capacity jumps from 2,500 to 3,500 pounds. There's also support for DC charging at a maximum of 50 kW, allowing owners to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in half an hour.

As with the previous-generation model, a diesel engine is not available. In fact, the RAV4 is no longer offered with a gas-only setup. The versions announced so far for North America, Japan, and Europe will feature full hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The RAV4 is a true globetrotter. Toyota sells its immensely successful crossover in 180 countries and regions. Around 15 million units have been delivered since the first-generation model arrived in 1994. It's the second-most popular Toyota, only outdone by the
Corolla
, which holds the title of best-selling car ever, with a whopping 50 million units sold by 2021.

Nissan Just Issued a Major Recall for Its Funky Variable-Compression Engine

Nissan's variable-compression engine once held so much promise. The so-called VC-Turbo uses a complicated mechanism to allow operation at a low compression ratio for performance, and a high compression ratio for better fuel economy. But, reliability has been a concern, prompting a NHTSA investigation , and now, a massive recall. CarBuzz brought our attention to the recall , which covers 443,899 Nissan and Infiniti models listed below: 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 2022 Infiniti QX55 2021-2024 Nissan Rouge 2019-2020 Nissan Altima The two Infiniti models and certain trims of the Altima use Nissan's 2.0-liter four-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, while the Rouge uses the 1.5-liter three-cylinder variant. As we've reported before , the problem stems from bearing failures due to a manufacturing defect in the "multi-link mechanism" that varies the compression ratio. Nissan has introduced manufacturing updates over the life of the engine, which seems to have helped, if not solved the problem entirely, hence why newer Infiniti models and Altimas, plus the new Murano, aren't covered in the recall. But, it's still a huge amount of engines. More on the VC-Turbo Nissan's Variable-Compression Engine Is a Disappointment 2023 Nissan Altima SR Review: Variable Compression, Variable Results Per the NHTSA filing , the recall procedure is straightforward, but it could prove painful for a struggling Nissan. Dealers will inspect the oil pans of affected cars for metal shavings. If no metal debris is present, they'll replace the engine oil in the four-cylinder cars, and the oil and pan in three-cylinder cars. Three-cylinder models will also get a software update. But if there is metal present in either VC-Turbo engine, dealers will replace the engine entirely if deemed necessary. Nissan said in a previous NHTSA filing that the incidence rate of bearing failures in VC-Turbo engines is extremely low, well under 1%. But if there is a problem, it could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Nissan could end up replacing thousands of engines. A potentially expensive endeavor for a company that's aiming for $3.4 billion in cost cuts over the next two years . The irony is that the VC-Turbo engine never quite delivered on its promise of huge performance and fuel economy improvements. Nissan spent decades working on this engine, finally doing what many others never managed to pull off, but variable compression didn't become a must-have piece of tech. Now, it's behind the curve on hybrids and EVs, playing catch-up in a changing world with a variable-compression albatross hanging off its neck. Nissan will send the recall notice to customers on August 25, 2025. Nissan recalls more than 480,000 vehicles over engine failure risk

Nissan is recalling more than 480,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada because of manufacturing defects that could cause the engine to lose power while in use. In a recall notice posted with the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan said it had identified bearing failures in certain vehicles. Nissan is recalling 443,899 vehicles in the U.S., the notice shows. In Canada, 37,837 are affected, a Nissan spokesperson told the Associated Press. The recall affects certain of the following models with 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engines: 2019-2020 Altima 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 2021-2024 Rogue 2022 Infiniti QX55 Engine bearings in the recalled models may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure, according to the NHTSA. Because bearing failures typically occur gradually over time, drivers may have advance warning of an engine problem. Signs include "abnormal noise from the engine compartment, rough running, malfunction indicator lights (MIL) and warning messages in the instrument cluster," the recall notice states. Dealer remedy To fix the problem, "dealers will inspect the engine oil pan for metal debris, and if necessary, repair or replace the engine" free of charge, according to the recall notice. In cases where no engine debris is detected during inspection, for vehicles with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil and reprogram the engine control module. For vehicles with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, dealers will replace the engine oil. Owner notification letters will be mailed on Aug. 25. Owners can contact Nissan's customer service line at 800-647-7261 or Infiniti's customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Owners can also contact the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171), or go to NHTSA's number for the recall is 25V437. contributed to this report.

Can confirm: the Genki Moonbase is a stylish power strip.

Posted Jul 3, 2025 at 6:32 PM UTC Can confirm: the Genki Moonbase is a stylish power strip. Not saying I'd buy, as my fav feature went MIA, but I'd love it as a gift! The $129 Genki Moonbase has three mesmerizing AC outlets (US, EU, UK or AU) and four USB-C charge ports. Those top out at 140W, 100W, 30W and 30W, but you don't lose too many watts with four gadgets plugged. My only disappointment is the light-up Moonlink cables no longer help you find ports in the dark. Genki says it removed that promise early on.
