Sporting News projects Auburn football to meet FSU in bowl season
Auburn football fans have the same mindset as former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis when it comes to its outlook on the season, "just win, baby."
Auburn football has failed to win more than six games since the 2019 season, and its coaching staff has worked to bring in the best talent to rebuild the program into an SEC Championship contender, as well as a player in College Football Playoff chatter. However, fans are antsy and are ready to see rebuilding efforts show on the field. One publication believes the Tigers are taking a step in the right direction as a recent projection sends the Tigers to a quality Florida bowl game.
Sporting News recently dropped its preseason bowl projections, pairing Auburn with an old non-conference rival in Florida State. The forecast, published by Bill Bender, predicts the Tigers and Seminoles will meet in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Dec. 27 at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
This projection is interesting as it puts two teams on similar paths together in a postseason game. The Seminoles showed promise of being a College Football Playoff contender in 2023 by entering bowl season with a 13-0 record. However, their playoff dreams were dashed when quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury in Florida State's win over North Alabama. Travis was deemed a Heisman Trophy candidate, and the playoff committee felt that the Seminoles were not as powerful of a team without him, which resulted in Alabama earning the fourth College Football Playoff slot. The Seminoles lost to Georgia in the Orange Bowl, 63-3, a game that the Seminoles are still recovering from. Last season, Florida State finished 2-10, and are looking to return to national prominence.
The two programs, which are separated by less than 200 miles, have played 19 times in history. Auburn owns a 13-5-1 record over the Seminoles, but Florida State won the recent game, 34-31, in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game.

Commanders Will Ask Jayden Daniels To Improve in One Major Pocket Category
Commanders Will Ask Jayden Daniels To Improve in One Major Pocket Category originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Few quarterbacks in league history enjoyed the success that Washington Commanders signal-caller Jayden Daniels saw in his rookie campaign. Advertisement The Heisman Trophy winner and second overall pick helped lead the Commanders to the NFC title game for the first time in over 30 years. Only five other rookie quarterbacks outside of Daniels have accomplished that feat over the course of NFL history. And now all that will be asked of him is to do it again. Plus some ... As Daniels prepares for a second season in the league, a big focus is on how the former LSU star can improve. CBS Sports writer Zachary Pereles highlighted the key part of Daniels' game that needs to improve for the 2025 season. "Though accurate in general and incredibly accurate outside the pocket, Daniels had an 11.2-percent off-target rate on throws in the pocket, 25th out of 36 qualifying quarterback," Pereles wrote. "While the misses weren't way off, Daniels did leave some open throws on the field when his mobility wasn't a factor." Advertisement We don't want to get too bogged down in advanced stats, but improving accuracy in the pocket is a reasonable ask. And part of the beauty of it all? Is it possible that this one thing - major as it is - is really the only statistical deficiency in the kid's hame? If this exists as being the one thing Daniels must improve on, it only highlights just how grand his 2024 performance really was ... and how much promise exists in the presence and future of the QB and his Commanders Related: Giants' Malik Nabers Talks 'Smack' About Commanders Instant Rivalry Related: Commanders Urged to Sign Three-Time Pro Bowler to Add To Dan Quinn's Defense This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Indiana Fever forward Makayla TimpsonGrace Smith/INDIANAPOLIS STAR-Imagn Images Timpson's development is no surprise to those who followed her college career. At Florida State, she was named the ACC Most Improved Player in 2023, earned three All-Defensive Team selections, and made the All-ACC First Team in her final two seasons. She finished her career with 1,706 points, 1,094 rebounds and 290 blocked shots, becoming the program's all-time leader in double-doubles with 47. Advertisement While she isn't putting up big scoring numbers yet, head coach Stephanie White is finding valuable minutes for her off the bench. Timpson logged 14 minutes in a road win against Dallas and another 14 in a home victory over the Las Vegas Aces. Heading into Saturday's game, Indiana held a 9-8 record, good for third in the Eastern Conference. The Fever are staying home for three more games, starting with a Wednesday matchup against the Golden State Valkyries. As Timpson continues to adjust to the pro game, her role is only expected to grow—especially with support from a leader like Clark. Commanders Get Worrisome Jayden Daniels Comparison from Cam Newton
Commanders Get Worrisome Jayden Daniels Comparison from Cam Newton originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders have seen some historic rookie seasons. A most wonderful example? In 2012, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III took the NFL by storm. Advertisement Thanks to RGIII's heroics, Washington won the NFC East as part of a major turnaround. The hope was that the signal-callers' stardom was only just beginning. Football fans know the rest of the story. Injuries derailed a once-promising career, and RGIII became a journeyman. The lessons learned from that experience have some people worried about what could eventually happen to Washington's new star quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Much like RGIII, Daniels is a Heisman Trophy winner and was the second overall pick from his draft class. While Daniels did not win the NFC East in his first year, he helped get Washington to the conference championship game for the first time in three decades. Advertisement So the similarities - right down to their relatively slight builds - are close enough. Those similarities (and differences) are a big reason former league MVP Cam Newton detailed on his latest "Funky Fridays with Cam Newton" podcast why there should be some concern about what could happen to Daniels in Year 2. "There's nobody who had the game in a chokehold like Robert Griffin III," Newton said. "RG3 comes in, has an unbelievable year, and it's like, 'Hold up, he's next." And then, of course, suddenly ... he wasn't. Now, just because Griffin got beaten up and into decline doesn't mean it has to happen again. Maybe a better angle is that it's a cautionary tale for Washington, which should feel both thrilled about its new quarterback and focused on keeping him healthy.
