The Washington Commanders have seen some historic rookie seasons. A most wonderful example? In 2012, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III took the NFL by storm.

Thanks to RGIII's heroics, Washington won the NFC East as part of a major turnaround. The hope was that the signal-callers' stardom was only just beginning.
Football fans know the rest of the story.
Injuries derailed a once-promising career, and RGIII became a journeyman.
The lessons learned from that experience have some people worried about what could eventually happen to Washington's new star quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Much like RGIII, Daniels is a Heisman Trophy winner and was the second overall pick from his draft class.
While Daniels did not win the NFC East in his first year, he helped get Washington to the conference championship game for the first time in three decades.

So the similarities - right down to their relatively slight builds - are close enough.
Those similarities (and differences) are a big reason former league MVP Cam Newton detailed on his latest "Funky Fridays with Cam Newton" podcast why there should be some concern about what could happen to Daniels in Year 2.
"There's nobody who had the game in a chokehold like Robert Griffin III," Newton said. "RG3 comes in, has an unbelievable year, and it's like, 'Hold up, he's next."
And then, of course, suddenly ... he wasn't.
Now, just because Griffin got beaten up and into decline doesn't mean it has to happen again. Maybe a better angle is that it's a cautionary tale for Washington, which should feel both thrilled about its new quarterback and focused on keeping him healthy.

DeMaurice Smith slams Roger Goodell, Jerry Jones, Aaron Rodgers in new book

DeMaurice "De" Smith hasn't served as the NFL Players Association's executive director for more than two years. But there's clearly no love lost between him and some of the NFL's most important figures. According to Awful Announcing, Smith plans to publish his new book, "Turf Wars," in early August. In it, he slams NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones, former NFL general counsel Jeff Pash and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Smith calls Goodell "a cold, dark void" who "was in the employ of madmen." Jones is characterized as stingy despite his estimated net worth extending into the tens of billions in recent years. Smith writes, "If Jerry Jones saw a dollar bill on the ground, I truly believe he'd stop and pick it up." NFL COLLUSION: In stunning ruling, arbitrator finds NFL encouraged collusion Jones is one of the main names called out in the book, though Smith doesn't let the rest of owners off the hook either. Awful Announcing's report on the early copy of "Turf Wars" includes that its author calls the overall group of NFL owners "a cabal of greedy billionaires." Notably, and despite the general characterization of NFL owners, Patriots owner Robert Kraft receives a nod in the acknowledgements section of Smith's book, according to Awful Announcing. The worst of all top NFL officials, according to Smith, is Pash, who retired in 2024 after 40 years of working with the league. Smith calls Pash "definitely the most unscrupulous. In a corporation filled with ruthless people, Pash has everyone else beat." AARON RODGERS: Steelers QB hosts DK Metcalf, other teammates for Malibu workout Smith didn't stop at calling out NFL executives, either. Awful Announcing reported that the former head of the NFLPA called Rodgers "the god of Cheesehead Nation" and "isolated and dismissive." Writes Smith: "He sat in the back row of the meeting room, issuing loud sighs before standing for a dramatic exit. An incredible quarterback, to be sure, but an even more impressive antagonist." That wasn't all. "In August 2021, my phone chirped with a text from Aaron Rodgers," Smith writes. "'Can you call me?' it read. Could I not run into traffic instead?" Smith's criticism of players didn't stop with Rodgers. Also on the chopping block is Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, who Smith calls out for criticizing players that kneeled during the national anthem because it "may be hurting the game and having an effect on revenue." NFL 2025: Predicting the 4 most explosive offensive players in the league Smith served as the NFLPA's executive director from 2009 until 2023. During his tenure, he dealt with the 2011 NFL lockout amid new contract bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations and the "Deflategate" incident from the 2014 AFC championship game. Smith also was the man who filed the initial complaint with arbitrator Christopher Droney that accused NFL owners of collusion. Droney ultimately dismissed the case, though not before noting in a 61-page document that the NFL Management Council "encouraged 32 member Clubs of the NFL to reduce guarantees in future contracts with players at the March 2022 annual meeting." The report ultimately found that NFL owners had not been engaging in collusive conduct, but the document remained under wraps until Pablo Torre unveiled it on his podcast, "Pablo Torre Finds Out" late last month.

Packers' Jordan Love Called Out Ahead of Pivotal 2025 Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love enter the 2025 NFL season with big expectations. They expect to be a top-tier contender in the NFC and one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the entire league. Over the last couple of years since Aaron Rodgers departed, Love has been able to lead the Packers to the playoffs in each season. However, the team has been eliminated in the Divisional Round of the playoffs and in the Wild Card. In the third year with Love as the team's starter, the expectations have increased. He had a solid season, but it wasn't great. Love's performance left a lot to be desired. Heading into the 2025 campaign, Love has received a new major warning. NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has issued a strong message to Love. He believes that the Green Bay quarterback will be on the hot seat if he doesn't pick up his level of play. "He's not on the hot seat per se, but he needs to play better in 2025 than he did in 2024," Florio said. "If not, he will be on the hot seat in 2026. The wild card in Green Bay is new CEO Ed Policy, who operates as the de facto owner of the team." That strong warning is warranted. Love is getting paid like a top quarterback in the NFL. He needs to start producing at that level. During the 2024 campaign, Love played in 15 regular season games. He completed 63.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. That cannot keep happening if the Packers are going to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Entering the 2025 season, Love has a ton of weapons and another offseason of work. He should show an improved version of himself. If he doesn't, Green Bay may need to have some tough conversations. Hopefully, all of this is completely put to rest by Love. He's more than capable of a breakout season, but he needs to show it on the field. For more Green Bay Packers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Notre Dame offensive lineman Charles Jagusah breaks arm in UTV accident in Wyoming

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame offensive lineman Charles Jagusah broke his left arm Saturday in a utility task vehicle accident in Wyoming. School officials announced Sunday that Jagusah had surgery to repair his fractured humerus, which is a bone located between the shoulder and elbow. They said the initial prognosis was 'favorable' and that he would return to campus this week for further evaluation and continued care. Advertisement This marks the second consecutive year that Jagusah, one of Notre Dame's most promising offensive linemen, has suffered a major injury before the season. Jagusah was projected to open 2024 as Notre Dame's starting left tackle, but he tore his right pectoral muscle during preseason practice. He came back to play in the Fighting Irish's final three College Football Playoff games. He started at left tackle and played all 63 of the Irish's offensive snaps in their 34-23 title game loss to Ohio State. He primarily played guard in their 27-24 Orange Bowl semifinal victory over Penn State. He was expected to open this season as Notre Dame's starter at right guard. The Irish begin the season Aug. 31 at Miami. ___ AP college football: The Associated Press
