Farewell to the Nissan GT-R as the Order Book Officially Closes

Yahoo07-03-2025
Nissan has officially stopped taking orders for the R35-generation GT-R.
The latest GT-R has been in the Nissan lineup for 18 years.
The R35-generation GT-R was discontinued in the United States in 2024.
It's official: Nissan's GT-R is off the order books. The Nissan Japan website has put a note on its GT-R page that basically says it's received all of the orders that it can manage through the end of the GT-R's production run.
Currently, Nissan doesn't appear to have a Godzilla successor heading to a Nissan dealership in the near future.
Of course, the R35 generation made its way to public roadways in 2007 and notably found an audience in the United States.
The R35 GT-R packs a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 under its hood, which bucked the trend of Nissan's RB-series inline-six engines that powered the previous Skyline GT-R.
Over its long tenure in Nissan's portfolio, the Skyline-less GT-R saw a series of important updates but didn't move too far away from its core VR38DETT and six-speed DCT combination.
The official note from the Nissan Japan website says, translated in full: 'We have received many orders for the Nissan GT-R, and we have now finished accepting orders for the planned production quantity. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our many customers for their patronage over the years since its release in 2007.'
It's also worth noting that Nissan might have a bigger project to tackle than finding the funds to build a next-generation GT-R. The company recently contemplated merging with Honda, but merger discussions fell apart when Honda apparently intended to fold Nissan into the Honda brand as a subsidiary.
Regardless of Nissan's future, this final generation of GT-R will go down in the history books as one of Nissan's most interesting products—and a sound successor to the string of popular Skyline GT-R models.

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid is a bit of a nonconformist in the growing compact hybrid SUV class. It's got a vestigial third row—a rarity in the segment—but that means its usage is limited to children and contortionists. This plug-in hybrid offers up to 38 miles of EPA-estimated EV-range, but its overall fuel economy could be better. It's quicker than its non-hybrid sibling, but at a starting base price approximately $10k higher. On the plus side, for 2026 Mitsubishi has tuned its flaccid suspension for a better ride-and-handling balance and added soundproofing materials to quiet the cabin. Despite its newfound improvements, the Outlander Hybrid still has an uphill battle on its hands, as its segment is now in full bloom with more modern and less expensive competitors. Expert Tip: Rivals such as the Honda CR-V Hybrid or Mazda CX-50 Hybrid lack the plug-in capabilities of the Mitsubishi, but they still offer better fuel economy than their nonhybrid counterparts and cost less than the Outlander Hybrid. What's New for 2026? A larger battery arrives alongside an increased range and improved acceleration, while a mild suspension upgrade is said to improve ride and handling. Exterior cosmetics get attention too. The 2026 Outlander PHEV picks up a revised grille and front bumper, new 20-inch wheel designs, and smoked taillamps. The interior sees many of the same upgrades the nonhybrid Outlander received for 2025, including heated and cooled front seats, a redesigned wireless phone charger, a new console with a larger storage bin and cupholders, additional sound-deadening materials for a quieter cabin, and new interior color choices. There's also a standard Yamaha-branded audio system. Pricing and Which One to Buy The SE trim is the best value. Its small price hike over the base ES is easily justified by the addition of 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, a larger 9.0-inch infotainment system, in-dash navigation, heated front seats with eight-way power adjustments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors. If your budget allows, consider adding the Tech package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, a nine-speaker Bose stereo, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Hybrid Powertrain: 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, 248 hp combined 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, 248 hp combined Transmissions: Continuously variable automatic (CVT) Continuously variable automatic (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel drive In our first test drive, we noted that the Outlander PHEV felt perkier than its nonhybrid sibling, especially in urban driving. Dynamically, however, the Outlander Hybrid is a bit boring. Its ride is agreeable enough, but its cornering attitude is far from sporty, and the brake pedal also feels squishy, even if braking performance proved to be okay. Those who enjoy the act of driving should consider the more athletic Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Luckily, there are paddles on the steering column that allow you to dial in how much regenerative braking the hybrid system will allow for. Its highest regenerative setting allows for nearly one-pedal driving, saving you from having to step on the spongy left pedal much. 0–60-MPH Times In Comparison: The Outlander PHEV is not only more efficient than its nonhybrid sibling, but also quicker. The nonhybrid needed 8.2 seconds to hit 60 mph. The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid required 7.6 seconds. Mitsubishi Towing and Payload Capacity The Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid is rated to tow a maximum of 1500 pounds. Range, Charging, and Battery Life C/D Range Test: 370 miles 370 miles EPA EV Range: 38 miles The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has a lithium-ion battery with 16.8 kWh of usable capacity. Though it currently uses the outdated CHAdeMo style plug, we anticipate that Mitsubishi will update its charging port for the 2026 model along with the already-confirmed larger battery of currently unknown capacity. Hooked to a DC fast-charger, Mitsubishi claims the current Outlander PHEV can charge the battery to 80-percent capacity in just 38 minutes. We'll update this section as soon as the new specifics become available. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 25 mpg 25 mpg EPA City Ratings: 25 mpg 25 mpg EPA Highway Rating: 27 mpg The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Outlander Hybrid yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 25 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. But Mitsubishi says a slightly larger battery is on the way for 2026, and we'll update this space as soon as the EPA data is in and we get one to run through our extensive testing regimen. For more information about the Outlander Hybrid's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: The Outlander Hybrid's interior design is stylish and well-appointed with quilted seat coverings and a bold, minimalist dashboard. Seats are comfortable, and the mild bolstering supports but doesn't pinch. Headroom and legroom are both generous here, beating several rival compact SUVs. Second Row: Though the styling echoes that of the first row, the second-row backrests are rather flat and lack the support of the fronts. There's a fold-down center armrest with a pair of cupholders, but there's less passenger space here than in the CR-V Hybrid and CX-50 Hybrid. Third Row: Kudos to Mitsubishi for squeezing a third row into a compact SUV, but its use is best reserved for kids and pets, as legroom is limited and access is challenging. Cargo Capacity: The Outlander has 13 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 31 cubic feet behind the second row, and 61 cubic feet when folded flat. With all three rows in place, we fit three carry-on-sized bags; the count grows to nine suitcases with the third row folded, and 27 pieces with both the second and third rows folded down. Mitsubishi Infotainment and Connectivity Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Audio System: 8-speaker Yamaha stereo (standard), 12-speaker Yamaha stereo (optional) A 12.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup. It includes navigation and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10.8-inch full-color head-up display is available as an option, too. Base models come with an eight-speaker stereo tuned by Yamaha, but a more premium Yamaha setup with 12 speakers is available on higher-end trims. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Basic driver-assistance technology features such as automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning are standard, but if you want more advanced features you will need to upgrade to the SE or SEL trim levels to unlock those, including adaptive cruise control. Standard Safety Features: Forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert Forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert Optional Safety Features: Adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist For information about the Outlander Hybrid's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Mitsubishi now offers complimentary maintenance, and its standard powertrain warranty is good for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Hybrid components also receive the same 10-year/100,000-mile coverage. Limited Warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles Five years or 60,000 miles Powertrain Warranty: 10 years or 100,000 miles 10 years or 100,000 miles Complimentary Maintenance: Two years or 30,000 miles C/D Test Results and Specs We test every vehicle we can. Honda Will Sell You Insurance, but Says It Won't Track Your Driving

Honda now offers insurance but says it will not track your driving. Many carmakers offer their own insurance or offer it through a partner. Many such policies include data gathered while you drive to gauge whether you're a safe driver. Some offer discounts for ADAS safety systems. Honda has joined Tesla, Ford, GM and other carmakers in offering its own insurance at the time it sells you a car. It used to be that after you picked the car you wanted, you'd be sent to the dealer's F&I department where they'd sell you financing and insurance, often through third parties. Now you can do the insurance directly with Honda, and other carmakers. Policies will be offered by Honda Insurance Solutions, which Honda says is a licensed insurance agency that provides 'competitive pricing and coverage options for autos, motorcycles, homes, and more.' Honda's new insurance agency will work with omnichannel insurance brokerage VIU by HUB 'to offer fast and easy quoting and advice, all found at While many carmakers use data on your driving to set insurance rates, Honda says it will not do that, saying, simply, 'We are not providing data to insurers to offer safe driver discounts.' Honda is not the first carmaker to offer its own insurance, of course. Premium Based on How You Drive Tesla created an insurance program tailored to take into account its autopilot and full self-driving (FSD) features. The Tesla program is priced based on how much a car owner is behind the wheel and on how safely they drive. 'We base your premium on how you drive,' Tesla says on its website. 'We use existing technology in our vehicles to track your real-time driving behavior, no additional hardware required.' This would drive King of the Hill character, the paranoid Dale Gribble, crazy. In 2018 a company called Swiss Re, the world's largest reinsurer, partnered with BMW to build the Swiss Re ADAS risk score, a vehicle-specific insurance rating that influences how primary insurance companies rate insurance premiums based on vehicle features and risks associated with each vehicle type. Discount for Safe Driving In 2020, Ford partnered with Nationwide to create Nationwide's SmartRide usage-based insurance program, according to Nationwide News, an in-house department of the insurer. With the program, drivers share their vehicle connectivity information with Nationwide and their connected vehicle will track and share distance driven, hard braking and accelerating, idle time, and night driving to establish a policy rate. The data are shared with Nationwide through the vehicle's embedded modem, eliminating the need for a special app or vehicle plug-in device. Customers are eligible for up to a 40% discount, Nationwide says, which will be applied when the policy is renewed. Rivian partnered with Nationwide and Cincinnati Insurance to offer their own user-based program. The program uses Rivian's Driver+ suite of ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, as well as its hands-free driving on selected highways to track drivers' performance. The more a Rivian driver uses Driver+, the more they are discounted on their monthly premium, said. OnStar Doesn't Need an App General Motors OnStar Insurance is available in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles that are model year 2016 or newer, uses OnStar to track driving behavior, and bases your insurance rates on how safely you drive. 'Instead of plugging in a gadget or downloading an app to assess your driving, we can use the technology already working in your connected vehicle,' GM says. 'Now more than ever, you can influence your auto insurance premium by driving safely.' OnStar tracks things like seat belt usage, aggressive braking, hard cornering, high speed driving and, again, night driving to determine your insurance rates. Volvo, which markets its safety features heavily, partnered with Liberty Mutual in 2017 to create the insurer's new TechSafety program. The program builds on the success of the Volvo City Safety technology which includes pedestrian, cyclist, and large animal detection with automatic emergency braking, Liberty Mutual said. 'We believe vehicles equipped with these types of advanced safety features will not only reduce crashes but help our customers worry less on the road while providing them new ways to save on their auto insurance,' said Hamid Mirza, senior vice president of product strategy and solutions at Liberty Mutual Insurance. The company cited a report from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) that showed cars outfitted with Volvo City Safety reduced rear end crashes by 41% and injuries by 47%. Mercedes-Benz also partnered with Liberty Mutual to offer their car owners customized insurance policies through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, which are tailored to save Mercedes drivers money if they drive safely. Like the other automakers, they offer telematics-based insurance solutions such as Pay-How-You-Drive, which allows safe drivers to earn a discount for low mileage and safe driving behavior. So these programs are good if you're a safe driver, maybe even a boring driver, but bad if you drive like an idiot. Like lap times, they reward smoothness. The Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Is Coming With V-8 Power

Mercedes promised it would give us more V-8 cars , and sure enough, the GT Track Sport packs eight cylinders under the hood. What is it? It's currently billed as a concept, but a production version is likely, as AMG says it 'provides a preview of a possible expansion of the GT series.' Additionally, the folks from Affalterbach claim the 'GT family is not yet complete.' Although the concept has the word 'track' in its name, we're still holding out hope for a road-legal version. Mercedes-AMG's upcoming next-gen GT3 race car must be based on a street-legal production model to comply with regulations, necessitating a homologation special to bridge the gap between road and track. We're likely looking at a hardcore version positioned above the GT63 Pro in the car's already vast lineup, which also includes a four-cylinder GT43 base model . Photo by: Mercedes-Benz The spare wheel sitting next to the camouflaged prototype appears to be a meaty Michelin street tire, leading us to believe the GT Track Sport will get a license plate for public roads. Despite the camouflage plastered all over the car, it's hard to miss the swan-neck rear wing or the large front splitter. How much of the regular AMG GT is left remains unclear, but a track-focused derivative is likely to come strictly with a two-seat layout. AMG has been criticized for softening the second generation by adopting a 2+2 layout, effectively turning it into a coupe version of the SL . The Track Sport should restore some of the track cred, bringing the fight to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport 5 Source: Mercedes-Benz Affalterbach wants to 'set new standards and record times,' so a hot lap of the Nürburgring seems plausible. The old AMG GT Black Series conquered the Green Hell in 6 minutes and 48 seconds on the longer 20.8-kilometer (12.9-mile) configuration, claiming the production car record at the 'Ring back in 2020. However, a 911 GT2 RS with a Manthey Performance Kit dethroned it a year later with a 6:43.3 lap . Mercedes-AMG eventually got its revenge with the One hypercar, posting a blistering 6:29.09 . But the GT Track Sport is unlikely to beat that. A more realistic goal would be to surpass Porsche's pace. That potential new record may already be under threat, though, as a new 911 GT2 RS is on the way.
