BJP MP Ravi Kishan seeks law to regulate food prices, uses ‘samosa' example

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and actor Ravi Kishan on Wednesday urged the central government to introduce a law to regulate food prices of dishes served in all eateries – from dhabas to five-star hotels. BJP MP Ravi Kishan said that the prices, quantity and quality of food items served are different everywhere. (Sansad TV/ANI Video Grab) The Gorakhpur MP, who also asked for the regulation of food portions in eateries, used 'samosa' as an example to make his point in the Lok Sabha. 'I still don't get why we get a samosa on a small plate in some places and on a big plate in other places for the same price,' Kishan said. He said that a 'vast market' like this was running 'without any rules or regulations'. Speaking during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, the BJP MP said that the prices, quantity and quality of food items served are different everywhere. He further said that a uniformity was required in the market. Giving another example on the lack of uniformity in food prices and quantities, Kishan said, 'Dal Tadka is available for ₹100 at some outlets, ₹120 at others, and ₹1,000 in some hotels.' He said that due to such pricing, the customers are usually unable to decide on the quantity they want to order. He added that for example, if four people decide to go out to eat, they will not know the quantity they will get at a given price point. 'I demand that the government introduce a law to regulate the prices of food items, their quality and quantity so that customers can purchase them at affordable prices,' Kishan said. Following Kishan's remarks, Congress leader Surendra Rajput took a jibe at him, urging him to also speak for regulation at the costly samosas at 'airports run by PM Modi's friend Gautam Adani', according to India Today. However, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi defended Kishan's demand, saying it was a matter of public interest. 'Mocking such matters and making them a subject of ridicule—how appropriate is that?' Tripathi questioned.

Ravi Kishan, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and actor, demanded the Modi government to formulate a law to regulate food prices in the country. Emphasizing different prices of food items served at various eateries, be it hotels, restaurants, or dhabas, Ravi Kishan said the government has not formed any law regarding the varying food prices. "Somewhere you get a Samosa at X rate in a dhaba while it is served at Y price point," he said adding, the size of samosas also vary. 'Dal Tadka' at some outlets you get for ₹ 100, while at others, it is ₹ 120, and in a hotel it is ₹ 1,000, he said. BJP MP Ravi Kishan seeks regulation of food prices, uses samosa to make his case

BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan on Wednesday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to regulate the prices and quantity of food items served from dhabas to five-star hotels."I still don't understand why we get a samosa on a small plate in some place and on a big plate in some other place for the same price. Such a vast market with crores of customers is operating without any rules or regulations," said the MP from Gorakhpur. advertisementDuring zero hour in the Lok Sabha, the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur said the prices, quality and quantity of food items are different everywhere. "A uniformity is needed," he said. Pointing out the lack of uniformity in the prices and quantities of food items across the country, Kishan said, "Dal Tadka is available for Rs 100 at some outlets, Rs 120 at others, and Rs 1,000 in some hotels."Ravi Kishan's demand stirred a row, with Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput mocking the BJP MP and asking if he could also speak up to regulate the highly-priced samosas at "airports run by PM Modi's friend Gautam Adani." Coming to Kishan's defence, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said that the Congress is not interested in the business of the House, as they are mocking an issue of public interest."Their sole focus is to create noise, disrupt proceedings, and deliberately obstruct the House. Those who have made such behavior a habit are naturally surprised when genuine public interest issues are raised," he said."Are issues like samosas or food stalls not related to public interest? Mocking such matters and making them a subject of ridicule—how appropriate is that?," he further questioned.- EndsInputs from PTI
