Adobe brings AI-image generation app to phones, adds partners

Adobe Inc. released its first dedicated artificial intelligence smartphone app on Tuesday that includes AI models from the company and partner firms, in a bid to tap into a growing trend of sharing AI images and videos over social media.The new app, called Firefly, packages Adobe's own AI model together with models from new partner firms Ideogram, Luma AI, Pika and Runway, and is available on iOS and Android phones.Previously, the service was available only as a web version, that used models from Alphabet's GOOGL.O> Google and OpenAI in addition to Adobe's model.Those models will also be available in the app, Adobe said.Generating images that can easily be shared on social media has become a key driver of AI interest, with OpenAI's Ghibli-style AI images driving record traffic to the ChatGPT creator.Adobe's mobile service will offer subscribers unlimited basic image generation from Adobe models, while it will charge extra for access to the company's premium models and those from its partners. The subscription cost will be the same as for the web versions of Firefly, which start at $10 per month.The San Jose, California-based company had earlier released AI tools along with the mobile app version of its popular image-editing program Photoshop.Adobe has not disclosed how much it pays the partner models on the Firefly app.The company had promised users that its AI model is trained only on material that it has a legal right to use, with Adobe offering protection against copyright claims.Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer for digital media, said Adobe's approach has also gained some resonance among consumers."Even for many of our individual customers, that promise of the commercial safety and the story about how Firefly is trained continues to be a really important differentiator," Greenfield said.

WhatsApp is now bringing a new capability for its Android beta testers that allows them to scan documents directly from the app, a feature that has been available to the app's iOS users for the past several months. The new feature ends the need to rely on third-party document scanners as WhatsApp itself creates images into documents that can be shared with different contacts. With the new feature, WhatsApp will bring a more streamlined document-sharing experience to its users by allowing them to seamlessly scan, convert and share documents in PDF format, reducing the hassle of switching between different apps. The feature was first spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.29, where it remained inactive owing to being still under development. However, the feature is now seemingly being rolled out to beta testers at large, with many users reporting gaining access to the new feature after installing the latest update from the Google Play Store. After the latest update, a new 'Scan Document' option now appears alongside the current 'Browse Documents' and 'Choose from gallery' options in the attachment menu. Clicking on the new option will open your Android device's camera and prompt users to click images for document sharing. Notably, WhatsApp also allows users to position their phone correctly for document sharing by giving them manual and automatic options. Under the manual option, users can take control over which parts they want selected for document scanning, while in automatic mode, WhatsApp detects the edges of the document in order to provide an instantaneous document-sharing experience. In other related news, WhatsApp also rolled out a new AI-powered feature earlier this week that summarises personal chats of users. The Meta AI-backed feature allows the personal messaging app to create a bullet-point summary of chats in order to provide users with a general idea of what the conversation is about before diving further.

DoT sends test alerts in Hindi, English
New Delhi The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued an emergency alert to Android and iOS mobile phone users across India on Saturday. The pop-up alert, received by smartphone users first in English around 1pm, followed by a Hindi version around 1:30pm, contained a test message informing the users about the government's initiative. DoT sends test alerts in Hindi, English 'This is a TEST Cell Broadcast message sent by Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. Please ignore this message. To STOP TEST messages, Android users can go to 'Settings' - 'Safety and emergency' - 'Wireless emergency alerts' and turn off 'Test alerts'. iOS users can go to 'Settings' 'Notifications' and then scroll to bottom and turn off 'Test alerts,' DoT's English alert read. The message was delivered to users who had enabled test alerts on their devices. A DoT official told HT that it was conducted as a routine test and done in line with Cell Broadcast Alert System testing. Another DoT official said it could be related to Monsoon preparedness. 'Such SMS alerts were earlier sent by DoT and telecom service providers (TSPs) in coordination with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). It's done district and PIN code wise,' added the second official. In a bid to make emergency alerts more inclusive, the government amended the Indian Wireless Telegraphy (Cell Broadcasting Services for Disaster Alerts) Rules in September 2024. The amendment said that all phones sold in India must support alerts in all official Indian languages as per the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, with auto-readout in Hindi, English, and four new languages added each year. Alerts will trigger sound, vibration, and flashing lights for up to 30 seconds or 15 seconds if the phone is set to read out the message. The read-out must be in Indian accent, said the amendment. If a user doesn't want to receive test alerts, they can opt out through their phone settings. On Android devices, they can go to settings — safety and emergency or apps and notifications — wireless emergency alerts and turn off test alerts. iPhone users can do the same by heading to settings — notifications, then scrolling to the bottom and disabling test alerts.
