England Women handed major injury boost ahead of Euro 2025 opener vs France

England begin their European Championships title defence against France on Saturday and their opponents have been sweating on the fitness of a key player before the game
France expect to be without captain Griedge Mbock for their European Championships opener against holders England on Saturday night. The Paris Saint-Germain defender has been battling to recover from a calf injury, but manager Laurent Bonadei indicated this game will come too early.
'Unfortunately Griedge is still feeling a bit uneasy on her calf,' Bonadei said. 'It's the beginning of the competition we don't want to take any risks

Bonadei indicated Mbock, 30, has suffered no tear or rupture and will be with the squad, albeit not able to start against the Lionesses. France made the big call to leave Wendie Renard out of the squad, but Bonadei says he trusts his younger players at the back - with 21-year-old Alice Sombath potentially in line for a start.

'Yes its true Wendie was an important decision but regarding other players in defence, not having Wendie and Gridege's injury could be damaging but the last 8 matches i think Wendie only played against Iceland," the manager added. He said he fully trusts the younger players preparing to step up in place of the more experienced old heads.
With Mbock and Renard missing, Sakina Karchaoui is one of the more experienced players in the squad, and she expects the captain to have an influence despite not being able to feature on the pitch. " Griedge is someone that's very important within the group because she s a leader, the captain of the team and even if not starting the game shell be there with us and always knows the right things to say," Kharchaoui said.
Earlier in the week, England defender Lucy Bronze was asked about her former team-mate Mbock. The pair played together at Lyon during Bronze's three-season stint with the club, between 2017 and 2020.
"She's picked up a number of injuries, been very unfortunate since I left Lyon, she did her Achilles twice and had a really bad knee incident," Bronze said.
"But before that, for a young player, she was so mature. She played right foot, left foot, so athletic, fast, read the game, she played so many years next to Wendie Renard.
"She just learned so much from her and then added her own style. When I went to Barcelona, she was one of the players Alexia asked me about. Mbock is probably not a big name that people would necessarily think of but when you play with or against her, she definitely catches your eye."

Predicted Lineups
England (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter;Stanway, Walsh; Mead, Toone, Hemp; Russo

Newcastle appoint new technical director - but are still hunting for Paul Mitchell replacement - as Magpies continue rebuilding backroom team

Newcastle have appointed a new technical director as they look to continue rebuilding their backroom staff ahead of the new season. The Magpies have been in a transitional period off-the-field, with former sporting director Paul Mitchell leaving his role after just one year and without making a signing at the club. It was announced in May that Mitchell would be leaving by 'mutual consent' at the end of June. However Mail Sport reported in June that the 43-year-old had overseen a handover. Though no one has been directly appointed to replace him, and the search for his replacement is being led by Nolan Partners. As revealed in June, Nottingham Forest chief Ross Wilson has been among the candidates and former Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto was to be spoken to by Nolan. Mail Sport also revealed that Julian Ward, Liverpool 's technical director, was another name in the frame. But Sudarshan Gopaladesikan has been appointed as the club's new technical director, and will report to a new sporting director once they have been appointed. They are still on the hunt for a replacement for Paul Mitchell, however, who left the club after just a year Gopaladesikan formerly worked with Atalanta, where he was the director of football intelligence. Newcastle say he will 'lead football data operations for our men's, women's and academy teams'. He said upon the move: 'I'm delighted and honoured to be joining Newcastle United as technical director. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with clubs that have deeply passionate fanbases, and Newcastle stands out for its unique connection between the team, the city, and its supporters. 'I'm excited to work alongside the club's talented staff to identify what helps give us a competitive edge. Most of all, I'm looking forward to experiencing the incredible matchday atmosphere at St. James' Park and being part of this proud football family and community.' He joined Italian side Atalanta in 2022, having previously worked with Benfica in Portugal. There, he worked as head of sports data science. The Athletic report he had a key role in Atalanta's signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Sturn Graz - a player the club went onto make profit of more than £50millon on. Newcastle, meanwhile, asked Andy Howe to work with Nickson as they look to build a squad capable of challenging on a domestic and European front this season. Howe, the nephew of head coach Eddie Howe, joined the Magpies in 2021 as head of technical scouting before being promoted to assistant head of first-team recruitment. He has played a key role in the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento and is well thought of within the club. Nickson and Andy Howe had absorbed the tasks that would have been the responsibility of Mitchell.

England ready to ‘get stuck in' again after Lord's clashes

Harry Brook insisted England 'don't always have to be nice' as they prepare to resume hostilities against India after tensions threatened to boil over last time out at Lord's. After exchanging good-natured wins at Headingley and Edgbaston, the Rothesay Test series grew testy at the home of cricket as India's fielders clashed with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in a time-wasting row. That lit a fire under England when it was their turn to field, with Jofra Archer giving a pumped-up send-off to Rishabh Pant while Brydon Carse and Ravindra Jadeja were involved in a mid-pitch collision. India crumbled to 170 all out in pursuit of 193 to fall 2-1 down ahead of this week's penultimate Test at Emirates Old Trafford, but Brook did not think England crossed any line in their pursuit of victory. Brook said: 'I've had a lot of compliments. Everybody (I've spoken to) said it was awesome to watch. It was good fun, I have to admit, it was tiring but it made fielding a lot more enjoyable. 'I think it put them under a little bit more pressure. The opportunity that arose for us to not be the nice guys was because of what they did. We just thought 'we're not standing for that'. 'We had a conversation and said 'it's time to not be those nice guys that we have been before'. You don't always have to be nice. Who knows, that might have played into our favour. It was good fun. 'We were doing it within the spirit of the game. We weren't going out there effing and jeffing at them and being nasty people. We were just going about it in the right manner.' England have been accused of being too carefree in the 'Bazball' era, and Brook revealed it was at his urging after some choice words from head coach Brendon McCullum that they should shed that approach. Asked whether that extra bit of spice will follow the teams up north as England look to guarantee a series win, Brook replied: 'God knows. We'll see whether it happens again and whether it works. 'We were just putting them under more pressure. Baz (McCullum) actually said a few days before that we are too nice sometimes, and I brought it up the night before the last day: 'Baz said the other day we're too nice, I think tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to really get stuck into them'.' Possibly to help them sharpen their way of thinking, England have enlisted mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka, famed for his work with New Zealand's rugby team and instilling a 'no d***heads' policy during a period where the All Blacks won the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. Enoka is a long-time friend of Kiwi compatriot McCullum and worked with England earlier this summer before reprising his role this week on a consultancy basis. He spoke to the group in a huddle before they trained on Monday. Mohammed Siraj was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for his angry send-off of Duckett during England's second innings, which ended with the pair brushing shoulders. He anticipates more needle between the teams in Manchester, saying: 'Yes (we will see more of it). I'm thinking what we need, what a player needs is sledging.' Brook had a rare fallow week at Lord's with just 34 runs and for the second time in the past eight months, he was knocked off top spot in the Test batting rankings by fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root. 'My main reason I'm in the team is to score runs and I don't want that (ranking) to affect my batting,' Brook added. 'I'm going to go out there, still be the batter I am. 'Everybody wants to be number one (in the world), don't they? Joe is a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him. 'In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time. So I'll let him have that one for now.'

Jess Carter ‘ready to play' in Euro 2025 semi-final after ‘disgusting' racist abuse

England manager Sarina Wiegman said it is 'really sad' to be occupied by one of her players suffering 'ridiculous and disgusting' racist abuse before a Euro 2025 semi-final and confirmed that defender Jess Carter is 'ready to play' against Italy if required. Carter spoke out at the racist abuse she has received throughout Euro 2025 on Sunday, with the 27-year-old deciding to step away from social media and the Football Association working with UK police to identify those responsible for the hateful posts. England's players have been angered by a team-mate suffering racist abuse during the tournament and decided in a meeting on Saturday night that they will not take the knee before kick-off against Italy. "It's really sad that we have to be occupied by this, it's ridiculous and disgusting what's happening,' Wiegman said on the eve of her third successive major tournament semi-final with England. "It goes beyond football, we have to support Jess [Carter]. She's not the only one who gets this abuse [and] that's why she wanted to address it. She's fully supported by the team and myself. "Of course we have had a conversation [about playing in the game]. It's a hard situation but Jess is a very strong person, she wants to move on too, but she and we felt we had to address this. We can't let it go. So we did. "We want to perform in the match, she's ready to perform and compete. That says a lot about her and the team." Midfielder Georgia Stanway said the racist abuse suffered by Carter and the Lionesses ' collective response has 'brought us together as a team' and said anyone posting abuse towards players on social media 'are not fans'. On the decision to not take the knee against Italy, a symbolic anti-racism gesture the Lionesses have performed for several years, Stanway said: 'Hopefully this will bring up more conversation and change. We want more action to be made. Our stance and our opinion stays the same." Wiegman was confident the Lionesses will be able to switch their attention to the pitch when they face Italy and said. 'They don't need a message, the team came really well together. 'We spoke about it, everyone wants to perform tomorrow, but we wanted to address this and send a message to the world. It says a lot about the team." Dutch coach Wiegman is aiming to lead England to a third major final after reaching the finals of the Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup and was asked towards the end of her press conference whether she had fallen in love with the country. 'Yes I have. But not the one Georgia was talking about. It's incredible but there are some people that do disgusting things.'
