Game Preview 6/6/25: Dodgers Vs Cardinals

Yahoo13-06-2025

The St. Louis Cardinals enter tonight's game 34-28 and 5 games back of the Chicago Cubs who will finally have to face a real opponent for the first time in 3 weeks. Credit to them for taking care of business but they get Skubal tonight. Of course this would be looked at more positively if the Cardinals weren't facing arguably the top team in baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers. L.A. enters tonight's game at 38-25 and pacing a tough NL West.
The Cardinals coming off back-to-back series losses to the Rangers and Royals will turn to Sonny Gray to set the tone for the remainder of the homestand. With rain in the forecast there will be a good chance for a delay later in the evening. The Dodgers will send young lefty Justin Wrobleski to the mound to start who is 1-1 with an ERA of 8.00 and will likely be an opener to face off against Donovan and Nootbaar. We saw the Tigers try this same tactic against the Cardinals recently and the two lefties at the top were able to neutralize the opener once but failed the 2nd time.

How to listen: 1120 AM KMOX/104.1 FM
First pitch: 7:15 PM
Matchup:
STL: Sonny Gray (6-1 3.65 ERA 3.94 xERA 3.27 FIP 3.05 xFIP)
Vs
LAD: Justin Wrobleski (1-1 8.00 ERA 5.07 xERA 5.19 FIP 3.74 xFIP)
Player to watch:
STL: Willson Contreras - Willson has started to heat back up again! In his last 7 games he's 8-27 slashing .296/.367/.444 with 7 RBI. Look for Willson to get an early RBI opportunity in this game and to put together several tough at bats tonight.
LAD: Shohei Ohtani - I mean, what do I really have to say? 23 HR and 39 RBI he's hitting .295 and carries a 1.037 OPS for the season! We're witnessing one of the greatest players of all time and it's scary as hell to watch him as the opposition but as a baseball fan is an enormous privilege. Look for the unicorn to do something incredible as he seems to on a nightly basis.

Cardinals' Sonny Gray pitches complete game shutout in dominant win over Guardians

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray turned in one of the most dominant pitching performances of the season in the team's 5-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field Friday. Gray, 35, completed the "Maddux," pitching nine innings of shutout ball while yielding one hit and striking out 11 batters with just 89 pitches. Gray's performance marks the first time a pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout of under 90 pitches since 2021. New York Yankees ace Max Fried was the last pitcher to do it, when he shut down the Baltimore Orioles as a member of the Atlanta Braves. The three-time All-Star has thrown seven complete games in his 13-year career, but Friday's complete game was Gray's first since 2017, when he did it with the Yankees. "I did it a lot earlier in my career, and it's been a while," Gray said after the game. "You don't know if you would be able to do it, especially the way the games kind of went, and especially with me. Like, I don't throw over 100 pitches very often." Gray never threw more than 12 pitches in an inning and had two innings with eight or fewer pitches. Gray was on the attack throughout the game with 19 first-pitch strikes to the 28 batters he faced. The Cardinals' starter retired 15 of Cleveland's hitters on three pitches or fewer, including six on the first pitch. "I knew the innings were kind of moving right along. I did know that I was perfect through that long. I made a good pitch there when the guy got the hit, so I was fine with that," Gray said. "When I was going out for the ninth, it felt like just another inning, which was nice." The Cardinals (45-38) will look to build on Gray's performance when they take on the Guardians (40-40) in the second game of a three-game series Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET. CHICAGO, IL - CIRCA 1979: Dave Parker #39 of the Pittsburgh Pirates bats against the Chicago Cubs during a Major League Baseball game circa 1979 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. Parker played for the Pirates from 1973-83. More Focus"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Dave Parker," the Pirates announced on social media. "A legendary Pirate, Parker spent 11 years in a Pirates uniform, winning 2 batting titles, an MVP award and a World Series Championship in 1979. The Cobra was part of the inaugural Pirates Hall of Fame class in 2022, and will be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown next month." Parker was known as one of the elite hitters that was part of the "Fam-a-lee" for the Pirates. His contributions to the team were significant, and it's hard to imagine the team winning the World Series without his efforts. He was 74 years old, and his impact on baseball will never be forgotten. The Cobra finished his career with 2,712 hits, a .290 batting average, 339 home runs and 1,493 RBI. Upon leaving the Pirates, he spent the next four seasons with the Reds followed by bouncing around several teams in his final two years. The seven-time All-Star made himself a staple in the mid-summer classic, and his performances led to winning three Gold Gloves, two batting titles and a Silver Slugger award. Parker will be missed deeply by the Pirates organization as well as the baseball community. More MLB: Phillies Insider Projects Twins 'Dangle' Closer, Utility Player as Trade Chips

Latest MLB Mock Draft has Cardinals Selecting Highly Touted LHP

Latest MLB Mock Draft has Cardinals Selecting Highly Touted LHP originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 MLB Draft is quickly approaching, and with just over two weeks remaining until this year's big event, MLB Pipeline has released its latest mock draft. Advertisement Many of the site's recent mock drafts have had the Cardinals selecting 17-year-old shortstop Eli Willits with the No. 5 overall pick. In the latest mock draft constructed by Jonathan Mayo of however, the Cardinals are projected to take LHP Jamie Arnold with their first-round pick. Arnold is a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher out of Florida State. He is MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall draft prospect. This past season was Arnold's junior year at Florida State. He posted a 2.98 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings pitched for the Seminoles. He received First Team All-American honors as a sophomore and Second Team All-American honors as a junior. MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall draft prospect Jamie ArnoldSteven Branscombe-Imagn Images Arnold's pitch arsenal includes a fastball that can touch the upper 90s, a devastating slider, as well as a changeup. His scouting report on MLB Pipeline compares him to Braves veteran left-handed pitcher Chris Sale. Advertisement "Arnold has shown the ability to fill up the strike zone and limit damage while maintaining his stuff deep into outings. With the funky arm slot, his stuff has drawn some comparisons to Chris Sale's, a reason why his name will be mentioned in conversations at the top of the first round." The Cardinals' No. 5 overall pick is the earliest the franchise has had since they selected J.D. Drew fifth overall in 1998. With Masyn Winn seemingly being the team's shortstop for the foreseeable future, and considering St. Louis went with shortstop JJ Wetherholt as their first-round selection last year, drafting a big-time starting pitcher like Arnold in this spot seems to make a lot of sense. This year's MLB Draft will begin on July 13 in Atlanta.
