Mum buys two drinks and three tapas in Benidorm and is floored by the price

Daily Mirror5 days ago
A British expat who has spent most of her life in Benidorm has revealed just how far under £20 can get you in certain parts of Benidorm if you are thirsty and hungry
A pint of beer, a glass of wine and a selection of food may be a costly endeavour in many restaurants – but one mum in Benidorm has uncovered a new 'bargain' deal while visiting one of her favourite pubs.

Michelle Baker has lived in the British tourist hotspot for over 40 years and the expat used to run a newspaper in the region. She now shares useful information on her Benidormforever Facebook page. And the mum, who has raised her children in sunny Spain, shared her latest food and drink find.

Speaking about the new offer at Baldo, which is based by the Benidorm Beach hotel, Michelle enthused on Facebook: 'I love this new brunch deal at Baldo Benidorm; a trio of tasty tapas including the CUTEST mini paella, DELICIOUS'mussels a la vinaigrette' & the CRUNCHIEST pork crackling…

'It comes with TWO drinks - choose from wine, sangria, beer or a soft drink and the whole thing costs just 20 euros - about £17!
'A perfect lunch to share (or keep it all to yourself ) the 'Tapas Time' deal is available every day up until 5pm and is a great introduction to the wonderful world of Spanish 'tapas' - plus the perfect opportunity to try paella if you've never had it!'

Michelle added that it was one of her favourite places in the whole of Benidorm and praised the atmosphere, great food, beer and cocktails, the latter being available on a two for €12 deal (approx £10).
Writing under the post, one person said: 'Can't wait to try here in September.'
Another wrote: 'Baldo Benidorm is fabulous, we did the bottomless brunch in June and it was well worth the money – lovely food and great choice of drinks, would highly recommend.'

A third said: 'That looks great value.'
And a final comment read: 'In June this year we did the brunch at Baldo and it was honestly amazing. The food was amazing and the service was perfect. I think we had about 7 cocktails each in the time given so if anyone's looking to book a brunch I highly recommend Baldo you won't regret it.'
For anyone jetting off to Benidorm for some sun this summer, Michelle has previously offered top tips, while also revealing the most common mistake Brits make on day one of their holidays.
Speaking to the Daily Star, she urged people to avoid being a 'first day fool', and explained: 'They get here, the measures are so massive, they set foot on the street and they say 'Oh beer is €2 a pint, let's have seven straight away'. If you can, just look around and see what the locals do, they have lived here a long time. Drink in the shade and drink water along with your alcohol."
She added: "I'm not saying don't drink alcohol, that's ridiculous, but drink water alongside it because alcohol dehydrates you. And if you are travelling with families, keep an eye on the kids. The kids will spend the day in the pool and they won't feel thirsty so it is up to you as a parent to keep topping them up."

American shopper 'sent into coma' after Sainsbury's visit

Content creator Paige Wester, who is an American living in England, posted a TikTok where she revealed her shock and confusion over how Brits shop. Taking to Sainsbury's and in a later video Tesco, the TikTok star branded the series "things in a British grocery store that would send Americans into a coma." Both videos have gone viral on TikTok, gaining a combined nearly 3 million views. American's shocked over British supermarkets Stepping into Sainsbury's, Paige was first surprised by British eggs, sharing: "Their eggs are never refrigerated, they're always in these containers or on shelves." One big element the TikTok creator was stunned by was the beloved tea aisle: "The tea aisle is absolutely insane to me. "It's an entire aisle just dedicated to different types of teas." Paige was also surprised by Brits' love of pies: "People love to make anything into a pie. "We've got steak pies, we've got chicken pies, we've got cheesy veg pies. "Don't get me wrong, I love a good pie, but not everything needs to be inside of a pie." The TikTok then entered the 'scary' part of Sainsbury's when she discovered black pudding on the shelf: "This is where things get scary, but black pudding is a staple in most people's households." Later, the content creator visited Tesco and was confused by the amount of juice concentrate available: "Americans may be fat, but someone tell me why British people won't drink water, they have to have juice." Adding: "Let's just all grow up and drink water like a normal person." Recommended Reading Last but not least, the American was stuck on having to pack their own shopping bags, sharing: "I know this is the lazy American in me, I'm well aware of that. "But I miss people packing up my groceries for me. "I leave the grocery store actually sweating because it stresses me out so much."

How to make piri piri chicken – recipe

A Portuguese dish with its roots firmly in the former colonies of Angola and Mozambique, this fiery, tangy marinade was popularised in Britain by a South African chain and has quickly gone native. These days, you can get piri piri salad dressing, piri piri crisps and even piri piri fish and chips, but you can't beat the original, fresh from the grill. Prep 10 min Marinate 1 hr+Cook 1 hr Serves 4 4 skin-on, bone-in whole chicken legs (ie, thigh and drumstick)Lemon wedges, to serve For the marinade4 garlic cloves 2 tsp flaky salt Juice of ½ lemon For the piri piri sauce2-4 red African or Thai bird's eye chillies, to taste 2 plump garlic cloves 1½ tsp flaky salt Juice of 1 lemon 2 tsp sweet smoked paprika 50ml olive oil, or neutral oil 1 tbsp port, or 1 tsp brown sugar (optional) Traditionally, this would be made with a whole spatchcocked chicken, but I found it hard to source birds small enough to cook through without burning (you could use a guinea fowl instead, if you prefer). Also, because breasts dry out quickly over a high heat, I generally stick with just chicken legs, so swap in breasts or wings if you like. Alternatively, use the same marinade on whole fish (sardines, sea bream, mackerel, etc) or meaty fish fillets (chef Nuno Mendes pairs it with halibut), large prawns, lamb or pork chops, or firm tofu. I'd suggest lightly brushing vegetables with oil and salt before cooking, rather than with the marinade, and serving with the latter as a sauce. If using the chicken legs, buy them bone in for ease of cooking; leave the skin on, too, to insulate them against the heat. If you'd prefer them broken down into drumsticks and thighs, by all means do so, or buy them separately. Either way, put the chicken in a tub or roasting tin just large enough to hold it all in a single layer. Peel the garlic and puree with a garlic crusher, pestle and mortar or the flat of a knife. Mix in the salt and lemon juice, then pour over the meat, turning to ensure it's well coated. Cover and leave at room temperature (unless it's a very hot day) for an hour, or chill for up to four hours. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Fresh piri piri chillies are hard to come by in the UK, though they're sometimes available online, but any fiery ripe (red) variety will do, and I think fresh work better than dried. Exercising caution, or wearing gloves, roughly chop the flesh seeds and all, discarding the stalks. Peel and roughly chop the garlic, then use a pestle and mortar, the back of a heavy knife or a mini chopper to mash together with the chillies and salt. Stir in the lemon juice, then whisk in the paprika and oil. Taste gingerly and add the port, if using, or sugar if you'd like it to be sweeter. Prepare the barbecue, if using. Once it's at cooking temperature (if using a coal barbecue, wait until the coals turn grey), arrange the chicken on a lightly greased grill and cover. Cook for 35 minutes, turning once, then check. Once it's almost done, brush with the piri piri sauce and grill, lid off, for about another 10 minutes, until cooked through. Alternatively, heat the oven to 200C (180C fan)/390F/gas 6 and bake the chicken in a roasting tin or tray for about 35 minutes, until cooked through, basting with its juices occasionally. Heat a griddle pan to medium hot, brush the chicken with the piri piri and grill for a few minutes on each side, until just starting to char. Serve the chicken with chips, rice or bread and tomato salad, with extra lemon wedges and any remaining sauce on the side. Note that it's worth making double the sauce, because in Portugal it's served with all sorts and not just chicken – you can also buy good ready-made versions in Portuguese or some African specialists.

He said of the show: "Making this series has been a life-changing journey. I've discovered so much about my own health, resilience and what it really means to live well.
