Ex-mayor urges govt to restore heritage buildings in Mysuru

Time of India3 days ago
Mysuru: Former mayor Shivakumar Monday urged chief minister Siddaramaiah to give special attention to the protection of over 234 heritage buildings, as many of them are poorly maintained.
The deteriorating heritage structures not only raise concern but also pose a danger to public safety and the city's rich cultural legacy.
Speaking to reporters, he said among the 129 officially-declared heritage structures, except for a few heritage buildings, mainly Devaraja Market, Maharani's College, and Lansdowne Building, most of them are in a dilapidated condition. Incessant rain and lack of funding for their upkeep have further exacerbated the problem.
As tourism in Mysuru is heavily dependent on its heritage quotient, the lack of focus on the upkeep of heritage structures is negatively impacting tourism. The state govt must initiate urgent measures for the restoration of these structures.
He said the state govt has also announced plans to convert the Old DC office building into a museum at the cost of Rs 78 crore, but the works were not started in this regard.
He mentioned that a non-political delegation, including MLAs and MPs, will be taken to meet the chief minister to prevail upon him to initiate measures for the protection of the heritage buildings.

He was addressing the gathering during the JD(S) membership drive of the Sringeri assembly constituency in Koppa on Thursday. The state govt and the agriculture minister have no concern for the farming community. When Union minister HD Kumaraswamy was the chief minister, transformers were installed for just Rs 25,000, but today the govt charges Rs 2.5 lakh, he said. Nikhil strongly opposed forest minister Eshwar Khandre's order prohibiting cattle grazing in the state's forest areas and said these irresponsible statements can result in the collapse of govt's administration. "In the Sringeri constituency, roads were full of potholes everywhere. The govt turned bankrupt to fix them," he mocked. Many people have built houses here, but they have not been given title deeds. Liquor scam during YSRCP govt fuelled black money: Sharmila

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y S Sharmila has made serious allegations against the previous YSRCP government, claiming that the liquor scam was engineered to facilitate black money transactions by deliberately halting digital payments. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to the media at Gannavaram airport on Thursday, Sharmila said, "In this digital era, it is shocking that liquor sales in Andhra Pradesh were conducted entirely in cash. This was done to hide massive corruption and evade taxes. This is not just a Rs 3,500 crore scam—it is an economic crime." She alleged corruption at every stage, from manufacturing to retail, with branded liquor being phased out in favor of low-quality alternatives. "Why was branded liquor stopped? Why was substandard liquor promoted? This was all part of a deliberate conspiracy," she asserted. Sharmila also raised public health concerns, stating that over five years, 30 lakh people developed kidney ailments and more than 30,000 died, possibly linked to poor-quality liquor. APCC chief called on chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and the SIT to conduct a thorough investigation into the scam and disclose the full extent of non-duty-paid liquor sales. "Former CM Jagan must explain why digital payments were banned in the liquor trade and clarify the motives behind it," she demanded. She further questioned Jagan's silence on other contentious issues, including the Rushikonda land digging and the controversial Viveka murder coverage.
