Penang ferry terminal to get seaview deck, commercial spaces in revitalisation effort

PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the revitalisation aims to modernise the terminal with an attractive design to improve visitor comfort and satisfaction.
Advertisement 'This will boost operational productivity,' Yeoh said in a statement. He added that the commercial spaces will feature a food and beverage hub and a garden bridge, alongside other attractions to draw more tourists. The PRTU upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve ferry operations, Yeoh noted. In addition, he said the extension of the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) now enables Oasis-class cruise ships to dock simultaneously, accommodating up to 12,000 passengers at a time. 'SPCT has been developed as a regional cruise ship hub, and projects around the terminal are being prioritised to complement these upgrades and attract more cruise ships to Penang,' he said. Yeoh also announced plans to collaborate with Printhero to establish a ferry museum showcasing Penang's iconic ferries, which once served as a crucial transportation link between Seberang Perai and the island. 'The conservation project aims to preserve the state's maritime heritage while offering visitors a chance to explore the history of water transportation in Malaysia. The old ferry, which carries countless memories, will be revived as a historical tourism attraction,' he said. Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook visited the PPC and reviewed key projects, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal Expansion Master Plan. According to Yeoh, the expansion involves reclamation work over 322.83 hectares and includes plans for a major petroleum hub in the northern region called the Northern Petroleum Terminal (NPT). The man from Kota Kinabalu had bought premium durians from Penang as a gift for his parents during a recent trip home to Sabah. Despite vacuum-sealing the fruits to eliminate any odour, he was told at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport that durians are banned on aircraft regardless of packaging. The man, who has worked in Kuala Lumpur for years, said he saved money and carefully selected the durians knowing his parents' love for the fruit. He made sure the fruits were professionally vacuum-sealed in airtight containers to prevent any smell from escaping. 'I made sure everything was properly sealed with no smell coming from the package. I thought I had solved the problem,' he said. However, Customs officials at the airport informed him that durians were strictly prohibited on aircraft, with no exceptions for vacuum-sealed packaging. "This is within Malaysia, a domestic travel within our own nation. It should not be this complicated,' he said, expressing frustration at having to abandon his purchase or miss his flight. He hopes Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin, who is also from Sabah, can help review the policy. 'Chan understands what it is like to be a Sabahan working in the Peninsula,' he said. 'He knows how important it is for us to be able to bring home local specialties for our families. DBKK urged to tackle illegal STRA, review high hotel licensing fees

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) has called on Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) to act urgently against illegal short-term residential accommodation (STRA) operators and review what it deems excessive hotel licensing fees. MyBHA President Dr Sri Ganesh said it is unacceptable that licensed hotel operators are burdened with high fees and strict compliance while unlicensed STRA units operate freely without regulation or accountability. 'This creates an unfair and unsafe tourism environment, not only for businesses but for the tourists themselves,' he said. The association proposed a tiered licensing system, lower fees for budget hotels, a tourist tax alternative, and better enforcement against illegal STRA. It also called for more transparency in how licensing revenue is used and urged DBKK to work with industry players to create fair, sustainable tourism policies. 500 Chinese families set to explore Sabah through nature learning tours
