Overnight joint-leader Christian Bezuidenhout starts second round with a bogey
Overnight joint-leader Christian Bezuidenhout's start to day two at The Open did not go entirely to plan on his return to Royal Portrush. With the wind slightly stronger than Thursday, with potentially heavy rain forecast for the afternoon, the opening hole was not playing any easier – it was fifth-hardest yesterday and already rated most difficult for the early starters. Bezuidenhout found heavy rough on the right and could only advance his ball 85 yards back into the fairway and missed a nine-footer for par. That left Sheffield's Matt Fitzpatrick, Dane Jacob Skov Olesen and China's Haotong Li – all afternoon starters – and Harris English sharing the lead on four under. But Bezuidenhout rejoined them with a birdie at the par-five next. Australian Marc Leishman, who yesterday complained about the pace of play, sped to a three-under 33 outward nine, and another birdie at the 10th moved him up to two under. Sergio Garcia, back at The Open for the first time since 2022, dented his hopes of making an early move with a double-bogey after finding a bunker with his approach at the first. He reclaimed a shot with a birdie at the par-five next but that only got him back to level par. An eagle for United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley after reaching the second in two got him to one under.

Encouraging front nine from Fowler
The opening day of the The Open 2025 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland saw a five-way tie for the lead Getty Images The first day of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club featured rain, windy conditions and a lengthy opening round. It produced a five-way tie for the lead atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par between Harris English, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li and Christian Bezuidenhout. Local boy Rory McIlroy is in contention with a 1-under 70 despite only hitting two fairways. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is one off the lead after firing a 3-under 68, and he only hit three fairways. Two-time major winner Jon Rahm, who entered this tournament among the favorites to hoist the Claret Jug, is in the hunt with a 1-under 70, three shots off the lead. English had the best round among the afternoon wave of golfers, getting into a share of the lead. While the rain subsided, the wind started to pick up, leading to a long first round that was still going on after 9 p.m. local time. The second round begins at 1:30 a.m. ET on Friday (6:30 a.m. local time). Getty Images Alas, the early charge is over from Sergio Garcia — for now at least. After those three successive birdies, the Spaniard got out of shape on his second shot at the eighth and that cost him his first bogey of the round. But Garcia remains 2-under, and that sees the two-time Open runner-up sitting alongside the man who also finished tied-second in 2014, Rickie Fowler. Having bogeyed three, Fowler responded with birdies at four, five and six — and takes the turn at 2-under, two shots off the clubhouse lead. Getty Images Scheffler -2, Lowry E, Morikawa +3 (16) What a scintillating tee shot from Scottie Scheffler. Standing on the par-3 16th, the world No. 1 blasted an iron 204 yards, landing three feet from the pin. He drained the putt to improve to 2-under-par for the tournament. Shane Lowry also found the green at the 16th. He missed his 28-foot birdie putt before sinking the four footer for par. Collin Morikawa lagged his 26-foot birdie putt to two feet for par, remaining at 3 over. Perhaps stung by memories of 2019, Rory McIlroy has reached for a long iron instead of his driver. He is playing alongside Justin Thomas and his Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood. McIlroy is first up. He pulls it left into the rough. But it's not out of bounds! Which is an improvement on the last time he found himself in this situation. Thomas next. And that's a confident shot. He batters it down the right-hand side of the fairway. Fleetwood is the last one off. Like Thomas he opts for the fairway metal and it's an even better shot. 246 yards slap bang down the middle of the fairway. Here we go. Rory McIlroy is at the first tee. The last time he took his first shot of a tournament here, at the 2019 Open, it didn't go well. He hooked his opening drive out of bounds. Then made a mess of his provisional and eventually had to settle for a triple bogey. He's struggled on this hole this week, too. His putting coach, Brad Faxon, for some reason thought it was a good idea to tell the Golf Channel that he has hit the ball out of bounds on the 1st tee twice already this week. Getty Images There is a look at a final birdie and the outright lead for Matt Fitzpatrick at 18, but his putt never turns and he has to settle for a final par on his opening round. With that, the Englishman returns with a 4-under 67 and a share of the clubhouse lead alongside Haotong Li and Jacob Skov Olesen. Rory McIlroy has moved his warm-up to the putting green. He is being watched by hundreds of people. 💬 Graeme McDowell has just been interviewed by Sky Sports in the UK. 'This isn't like a major, it's like a Ryder Cup,' he says. Getty Images Scheffler -1, Lowry E, Morikawa +3 (15) Scottie Scheffler got a stellar break on the par-4 15th. His 142-yard second shot escaped finding the green side bunker and held up on the short grass at the right edge of the green. The world No. 1 used his exquisite short game to perfection, nearly chipping in a 14-yard shot, leaving a tap-in par putt. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry missed a 26-foot birdie chance but saved par. Collin Morikawa drained a seven footer for par to remain at 3 over. What a delicious chip and run from Justin Leonard at the third, which pitches and rolls in — bringing a beaming smile out of the 1997 champion golfer. Early days but that's a first birdie of the day after two opening pars, and a sign that conditions have lifted considerably compared to a few hours ago. Getty Images Sergio Garcia is cracking through these holes and picking up the shots as he goes. A sensational approach at the seventh — which has been giving up a few birdies today — gives the Spaniard a realistic look at an eagle, and that is off birdies at five and six. He comes up short in the end, but it's still a third birdie in three holes and Garcia is 3-under through seven. Getty Images What a fine start to The Open for Matthew Jordan, who gets home with a 3-under 68 that is just a shot off the current leaders. Jordan grew up playing links golf and has finished tied-10th at the last two Open championships, so there is pedigree too. Speaking about his opening round to Sky Sports, Jordan said: 💬 'Obviously I'm very pleased with that (round) but more so the performance. I just enjoy (links golf) so much. It's so good. From the first tee to 18, it's the most enjoyable thing I do, and that's what I take from it most. 'Then the pressure and adrenaline on each shot focuses your attention a bit more, but when you do something you enjoy, you also do it that bit better.' Jordan seems a solid shout to feature highly throughout the week, based on his start today. Getty Images Scheffler -1, Lowry E, Morikawa +3 (14) That's a solid par for Scottie Scheffler at the par-4 14th. After missing his 277-yard tee shot in the left rough, the world No. 1 blasted his second shot 16 yards from the pin, short of the green. Scheffler left his approach shot 10 feet from the pin but was able to bury his par putt with a stellar roll to remain at 1 under. Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa both parred the 14th to remain at even and 3 over, respectively. To the 15th hole this featured group goes, looking to finish strong. Getty Images Darren Clarke, the 2011 champion, is almost as popular as Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy around these parts. The 56-year-old is determined to make the cut tomorrow but has work to do after a frustrating round of 75. 💬 'Four over wasn't what I was hoping for,' he told the BBC in Northern Ireland a short while ago. 'In my practice I was hitting the ball nicely, putting nicely and doing everything well, but that's golf. Today it didn't quite happen. 'On the front nine I hit shots that wouldn't make you think I was a member here. I was missing them in the wrong places and it's like 'what am I doing!?'. Just stupid mistakes, but the chip in on 17 was a huge bonus and it was nice to do something good and positive for the day. 'I just need to play well tomorrow.' Getty Images Rory McIlroy is currently warming up on the range, being watched by more spectators than are following most players. He's wearing the same grey knitted jumper as Scottie Scheffler. Perhaps Nike's golf stylists are all on their summer vacation. We're up to the 43rd group setting out at Royal Portrush with Russell Henley, Tyrrell Hatton, and Min Woo Lee up and running — in conditions the rest of the field would've gladly accepted. No excuses here, guys. Just the nine trios to follow with Robert MacIntyre, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Rose up next. Matt Fitzpatrick has been showing signs of life over the last couple of months — a T8 at the PGA Championship, T17 at the Travelers and T4 at the Scottish Open last week. But I did not see this coming — he's 4-under and tied for the lead after a bit of luck on No. 16, when from so far below the green I'm not sure he could see the hole, his ball hit the bottom of the flag stick and dropped in for birdie. Getty Images Lowry E, Morikawa +3, Scheffler -1 (14) Boy, is the par-3 13th green playing tough to stick on. All three of Scheffler, Morikawa and Lowry fly left here — with Morikawa in heavy rough and Lowry's pitch taking a bounce that pings the ball into the lighter stuff, but a fair whack away from the pin. A sensational scramble again from Morikawa too, but he still pays the price be falling short on his 12-foot putt for par and he has to stomach dropping to 3-over. Lowry didn't like his second shot much and his putt down the hill is too tricky; he slips back to even with his bogey. Which leaves Scheffler, who was closest to the pin off the tee and while it wasn't on the green, the fringe is bridgable and he walks away with his par. Classic damage limitation again. Getty Images Jordan -3, T Olesen +1, Jakubcik +4 (F) Jordan finds the first cut with a 3-wood off the tee. Not his best but there are certainly worse lies. 206 to the hole and he finds the green but there's still work to be done. This would be an impressive birdie if he can convert from 40-feet. Decent roll from there, giving himself a gimme to close the round, which he easily sinks to end the day one shot back. Getty Images Spaun -1, Schauffele E, Rahm E (13) J.J. Spaun, welcome back to red figures. The current U.S. Open champion hit his 201-yard tee shot on the par-3 13th to eight feet from the cup. Can you believe that before this group walked to the 13th tee there were only TWO birdies at this hole? Well, that changed as Spaun buried the birdie putt to improve to 1-under-par for the tournament. Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele sank his five-foot par putt to remain at even. Jon Rahm also stayed at even after sinking his four footer for par. Getty Images Look at Scottie Scheffler's feet on this drive. His unique footwork is often discussed but it's still so fascinating - back foot nearly off the ground and rotated before he's even made contant.
