Tyler, The Creator Tops Kendrick Lamar And Drake With His New Album

Forbes19 hours ago
Tyler, the Creator thrilled his massive, devoted fanbase by releasing a brand new album, Don't Tap the Glass, just months after Chromakopia, his most recent project which became a global sensation in the fall of 2024. The full-length arrived with very little warning and landed in the middle of a tracking week, but that didn't stop it from becoming one of the biggest releases in the world. Don't Tap the Glass opens at No. 1 on several albums charts in the United Kingdom this week.
The rapper dominates one genre-specific tally with tunes from the set, pushing his career total considerably higher thanks to his exciting new full-length.
Tyler, the Creator's Seven New Hits
Tyler claims seven spots on the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Singles chart this frame. The tally ranks the 40 bestselling tracks in hip-hop, R&B, and rap, and currently, many of them come from Don't Tap the Glass. All seven of Tyler's current smashes debut this week, with only a few songs from the 10-track album failing to make the cut.
'Big Poe' with Pharrell and Sk8brd Opens Inside the Top 10
Among Tyler's seven new hits, 'Big Poe' with Pharrell and Sk8brd (who is, confusingly, also Pharell) is the highest debut. That collaboration is the only top 10 from the collection, as it launches at No. 9.
Two other tracks, 'Sucka Free' and 'Ring Ring Ring,' open inside the top 20, landing at Nos. 15 and 16, respectively. Other new arrivals include 'Stop Playing With Me,' 'Mommanem,' 'Don't Tap That Glass/Tweaking,' and 'Don't You Worry, Baby.'
Nearly One-Third of All His Career Wins
Throughout his career, Tyler has now sent 24 songs to the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Singles chart. Nearly one-third of those placements are brand new this week.
Tyler dominates the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Singles chart this frame, claiming more hits than any other artist. Drake and Kendrick Lamar are currently tied for the second-most wins, with five apiece.
Several Smashes for Tyler, the Creator
Three tracks from Don't Tap the Glass also performed well enough to appear on the Official Singles chart, which ranks the 100 biggest tracks in the country regardless of genre. Each lead artist is only allowed to occupy three spaces on that list at any one time, and Tyler reaches that number easily.
'Big Poe' nearly breaks into the top 40, opening at No. 43, while 'Sugar on My Tongue' and 'Sucka Free' arrive at Nos. 46 and 58, respectively.

Netflix's Best New Show Has A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score, But There's A Catch

We always love a good sci-fi series, and given that it's mainly just Apple making those right now, it's nice to have one head to Netflix that isn't a Stranger Things season every three years. That show is The Lazarus Project, a sci-fi series that originally aired in 2023 on Sky, but has now ported over its two seasons to Netflix. The series has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, an infrequent feat. Here's the synopsis, which is Groundhog Day-esque: 'George is under the impression that he is beginning to lose touch with reality when he finds himself living the same day over and over again. A chance encounter with a man called Archie reveals that George is very much in touch with reality, but at the same time, reality can be stranger than fiction. With George's newfound understanding of his power and perception of space-time, he is forced to choose between loyalty to an organization trying to save the world and the ability to rewrite the past for a friend.' I did watch this a while back, and it's quite good. Time travel stories are tough to do right, but The Lazarus Project does a good enough job. However, there's a problem. The Lazarus Project comes pre-cancelled. After its first two seasons, viewership was poor enough where Sky did not pick up the show for a third season. It was not meant to end after two seasons, as season 2 ended with a significant cliffhanger that is not going to ever be resolved. So even if the show is good, the warning here is that you'll never get to see the full storyline unfold. I understand how that may mean you don't want to start it in the first place, as it's similar to a bunch of other shows that currently occupy Netflix's graveyard of unfinished projects. Here's what Sky said about its cancellation at the time: "The Lazarus Project has brought audiences jaw-dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this BAFTA-winning series. Whilst we won't be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible." One interesting aspect of The Lazarus Project is that it's a showcase for the upcoming new Severus Snape actor in HBO's Harry Potter series, Paapa Essiedu, who's the star of the show. Essiedu's casting as Snape in Harry Potter has drawn controversy, both for his race, given that it creates some newly uncomfortable situations like James Potter bullying a young black kid and hanging him upside down in the '70s, or just the fact that he's…young and handsome, which is not exactly how Snape is meant to be. But he's a great actor! I don't know if I'd recommend the show based on how frustrating it is to not be able to finish a storyline. I'll leave that up to you. Only banjos in the building: Steve Martin will co-host the 2025 IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards

NEW YORK (AP) — Get those banjos ready, because this isn't a joke: Actor and comedy legend Steve Martin will co-host the IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards for the first time, alongside Grammy-award winning roots musician Alison Smith. This year's show will take place Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium. Fans are able to purchase tickets via Ticketmaster. 'I'm thrilled to be hosting with Alison Brown, and connecting with all my bluegrass friends as opposed to my kinda dumb comedy friends,' Martin said in a statement. 'The IBMA Awards show is always one of my very favorite nights of the year,' Brown added. 'I'm so honored to co-host this year with my banjo pal Steve Martin.' Martin is a longtime lover of bluegrass, first picking up the banjo as a teenager. He's released a number of albums and even created the bluegrass musical 'Bright Star ' for Broadway — a complex love story set against the American South written by Martin and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. In addition to their hosting duties, Martin and Brown's collaborative single, '5 Days Out, 2 Days Back,' has been nominated in three categories: song of the year, music video of the year and collaborative recording of the year. IBMA is the International Bluegrass Music Association.
