Chelsea reach Club World Cup semi-finals as late own goal downs Palmeiras
Chelsea scored a fortuitous late own goal to snatch a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras and reach the Club World Cup semi-finals. Extra time was looming at Lincoln Financial Field when Malo Gusto's cross took deflections off Agustin Giay and goalkeeper Weverton and ended up in the back of the Brazilians' net in the 83rd minute. Advertisement The London side had led early on through Cole Palmer but were pegged back by a superb strike from Estevao Willian, the 18-year-old winger who will join them after the tournament. Palmeiras had been threatening to finish the stronger but Gusto's late stroke of luck ensured it was Chelsea who went through to face Fluminense in the last four. The contest was played in vibrant atmosphere with the crowd, perhaps helped by the dynamically-priced tickets having dropped as low as £8 earlier in the day, an impressive 65,782. That was despite the counter-attraction of a free Independence Day concert and firework display in downtown Philadelphia – albeit one for which headline act LL Cool J pulled out. Advertisement The soundtrack to the evening was provided by the constant drumbeat and singing of Palmeiras' sizeable following. It was a noise Chelsea could not silence but, despite being forced into a late reshuffle after captain Reece James was injured in the warm-up, they settled the quickest. Pedro Neto started despite having considered missing the game following the death of his Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, and he held up a shirt bearing his name, and that of his brother Andre Silva, during a pre-match moment's silence. Palmer had already forced a good save from Weverton when he opened the scoring following a fine run and finish on 16 minutes. Cole Palmer, left, had opened the scoring (Chris Szagola/AP) The England international wrong-footed a defender with a quick turn and he then swerved past another challenge before delivering a left-foot shot into the bottom corner. Advertisement Chelsea could have increased their lead as Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez tested Weverton and Trevoh Chalobah and Christopher Nkunku missed the target. With Cucurella giving Estevao a tough time until this point, Palmeiras struggled to create openings. They finally threatened just before the interval but Robert Sanchez comfortably saved Vanderlan's header and Bruno Fuchs nodded over after the restart. It proved the start of a good spell for the Sao Paulo side and the equaliser came as Estevao took a pass from the right and lashed in a shot from a tight angle. It was a stunning finish and Chelsea immediately responded by sending on Joao Pedro for his debut following his £60million move from Brighton. Advertisement Chelsea had a scare when Allan drove narrowly wide and Levi Colwill needed to make a last-gasp interception prevent another Palmeiras chance. But they had a good opportunity themselves when Cucurella shot over and then edged in front when Gusto's cross took a ricochet and fooled Weverton. It was a decisive blow and Noni Madueke almost added a third when his late shot was tipped onto the post by Weverton. Liam Delap and Colwill will miss the semi-final after being booked.

Thousands gather in Columbia for 4th of July celebrations
This Independence Day, tens of thousands of people from across the region gathered at the downtown Columbia lakefront for their annual Fourth of July celebration. "Columbia is a central location for our county, and so it's a really great place for people from all corners of the county to come out and celebrate," said Danica Rynes, Communications Manager of the Columbia Association. The event is hosted by Howard County Recreation and Parks along with the Columbia Association and the Merriweather Arts and Culture Center. It's also supported by groups like the Howard County Veterans Foundation. "It's America's 249th birthday, and we - The Howard County Veterans Foundation – come out every year to participate and support the event. And to talk about our project, which is the Howard County Veterans and Military Families' Monument, which will be built at the lakefront sometime this fall," said Robert Gillette, president of the Howard County Veterans Foundation. People started claiming their spots on the grass as early as 3 in the afternoon, hoping to get the best view of the fireworks. "I'm excited to see the fireworks," 11-year-old Mila told WJZ's Caroline Foreback. It's fun for all ages with live music, food trucks, and of course the fireworks. However, it's the sense of community that keeps people coming back year after year. "This is five years in a row that myself and some of my friends, who are also involved in the Special Olympics Howard County Program, have done," Nicholas Stewart, a Columbia resident, said. "And it's that tradition building," Danica Rynes, another attendee, added. "This has gone on for decades and decades, so people have grown up coming to these fireworks and they continue to return and bring their own families, bring some friends." "Watch some fireworks, have some hotdogs, hamburgers, and hangout with our community here and celebrate what occurred 249 years ago in Philadelphia – the signing of The Declaration Of Independence," Gillette explained. Organizers say they're already planning something special for next year, the nation's 250th birthday.

Sam Bachman throwing error in 10th inning seals Angels' loss to Blue Jays
TORONTO — Myles Straw scored the winning run on a throwing error by pitcher Sam Bachman in the 10th inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to six games by beating the Angels 4-3 on Friday night. Straw, the automatic runner, scored from second when Bachman fielded Ernie Clement's sacrifice bunt and overthrew first base. Bachman (1-2) entered in the 10th and walked leadoff hitter Nathan Lukes, putting runners on first and second with nobody out for Clement. Chad Green (3-2) worked a scoreless inning for the win. Jo Adell tied it for the Angels with a three-run homer in the seventh. Andrés Giménez drove in the first run with a single for Toronto in the sixth. Giménez advanced to third on George Springer's single before leaving with an ankle injury. Giménez tweaked his left ankle covering second base on a steal Wednesday and did not play Thursday. He was scheduled for an MRI. Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer set down his first 12 batters before Adell doubled to begin the fifth. Adell was initially called out trying to advance but the Angels challenged and the call was overturned following a replay review. Giménez hit Adell in the face trying to tag him out at second. Adell was treated on the field and remained in the game. Toronto's Will Wagner doubled to open the sixth and advanced on a sacrifice before scoring on Giménez's hit. José Fermin replaced Angels starter Kyle Hendricks after Springer's single. Bo Bichette hit an RBI single and another run scored when shortstop Zach Neto bobbled Addison Barger's grounder for an error. Mike Trout and Taylor Ward chased Lauer with back-to-back singles to begin the seventh, and the Angels tied it when Adell greeted reliever Nick Sandlin with his 19th homer. Bachman's high throw sparked a celebration at home plate as Toronto improved to 30-16 at home. The Angels faced the Blue Jays on Independence Day for the eighth time, going 4-4 in those meetings. Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday against Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.44).
