Independent02-05-2025
A rare painting by LS Lowry originally bought for £10 has sold at auction for more than £800,000.
The painting, Going To The Mill, was bought by literary editor of the Manchester Guardian, Arthur Wallace, for £10 in 1926 and has been in the same family ever since.
On Friday the artwork sold at auction at the Mall Galleries in central London for £805,200, including buyer's premium.
Lowry, who was lauded for his portrayal of everyday industrial scenes in northwest England, painted the piece in 1925.
Going To The Mill is marked on the back as being £30, but Lowry let Mr Wallace have it for £10.
It is believed to be one of the earliest sales made by the Stretford-born painter.
He also gifted him an additional work, The Manufacturing Town, which the family sold several years ago.
The artwork, which has been in the Wallace family for the last century, was recently on long-term loan to Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.
Simon Hucker, modern and contemporary art specialist and head of sale, Lyon And Turnbull auction house said: 'We're absolutely delighted by the price achieved for this exceptional, early painting by Lowry, bought from him when he was a virtual unknown.
'There are few artists who become a household name in Britain and Lowry definitely falls into this category.'
Mr Hucker added: 'This is a painting shows that Lowry at his conceptual best, no naive painter of 'matchstick men', as the old pop song went.
'Instead he is an artist of true dexterity who is making deliberate formal choices, abstracting the figure in order to express an idea about loneliness and isolation within the teeming city.
'Going To The Mill is the epitome of a 1920s Lowry, the period when he becomes a unique voice in British art.
'It is especially rare is for a painting such as this to have been in one collection for one year shy of a century and we are delighted to have played a small part in its history.'
In 2024 a Lowry painting titled Sunday Afternoon sold for almost £6.3 million at auction.

Gogglebox star front-runner to take over from John Torode on MasterChef after BBC sacking

A Gogglebox star has emerged as the new favourite to replace John Torode on MasterChef. A beloved Gogglebox personality has emerged as the leading contender to replace John Torode on MasterChef following his dismissal from the programme. ‌ In a shocking turn of events, the BBC confirmed yesterday that they would not be renewing the 59-year-old's contract after an historic allegation of racism – which the Australian chef vehemently denies and claims to have no recollection of – was substantiated by an independent investigation into John's co-host, Gregg Wallace. ‌ This revelation followed the termination of Gregg, 60, from MasterChef in light of the inquiry into his conduct. The report, carried out by legal firm Lewis Silkin, found that 45 out of 83 accusations levelled against the father-of-three were corroborated, primarily involving inappropriate sexual language and humour. ‌ In the aftermath of Gregg and John's departure, Andi Oliver, star of Gogglebox and Great British Menu, has surfaced as the likely successor to host MasterChef. According to Andi is currently the favourite with odds at 5/2 (28.6 per cent). Renowned for her vibrant persona and authority on Great British Menu, Andi's culinary prowess has positioned her as a top pick among fans and bookies alike. Her appointment would also mark a historic moment as the first Black woman to present the show, reports the Mirror. The betting markets have responded swiftly to John and Gregg's exit from MasterChef, with odds analyst, Dave James, informing the Mirror that a well-known celebrity chef is also vying for the position. He commented: "Andi Oliver remains the market leader, but Tom Kerridge is attracting a lot of support. His profile is huge, and he's one of the most trusted names in British food. ‌ "This could come down to what direction the BBC wants – prestige, relatability, or a bit of both." Tom, who has odds of 3/1 (25 per cent), runs several eateries, presents numerous BBC programmes, and is known for blending haute cuisine with broad appeal - not to mention being the creator of the £37 fish and chips at Harrod's. ‌ Next in line is Poppy O'Toole, an emerging sensation on TikTok and within contemporary food media, with odds of 4/1 (20 per cent), followed by Angela Hartnett at 5/1 (16.7 per cent). Great British Bake Off favourite Nadiya Hussain is at 6/1 (14.3 per cent). Further back in the betting are television regulars such as James Martin and Grace Dent, who took over presenting duties on Celebrity MasterChef alongside John when Gregg temporarily stepped aside amid an investigation into his conduct on the programme. ‌ In the meantime, Nigella Lawson, Marcus Wareing, and even John's spouse, Lisa Faulkner, remain contenders for the future face of MasterChef as the show's fate hangs in the balance. Another prominent figure tipped to take over the iconic BBC series is Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt. There's speculation that the experienced presenter has already secured the role for MasterChef: The Professionals. Matt played it cool regarding the prospect of presenting MasterChef after Gregg's departure earlier this year. Speaking to Muddy Stilettos about potentially co-hosting with John while he was still employed on the show, he remarked: "Well, there's always rumours, but it would be a great gig for sure!" Hit musical about Celtic FC is coming back to Glasgow

'My dad saw this show at the Armadillo and loved it,' says the Castlemilk-born actor. 'He sadly died in May, so when I saw the auditions come up, I thought I'd try for a part and do it in his memory. I'm doing it for him.' Stephen is starring in Celtic The Musical, a reimagined version of the hit show which has been delighting audiences in Glasgow and on tour for almost a decade. The new cast of Celtic The Musical (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) It is coming to the Pavilion in September, and the Glasgow Times was given exclusive access to the new cast as they met for the first time at Celtic Park in the East End. Celtic The Musical follows the life and times of the Quinn family, as they support their beloved club through the generations, from its founding by Brother Walfrid in 1888 through the heady days of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions, to Brendan Rodgers' present-day squad. Songs include fan favourites Hail Hail, Over and Over and the spine-tingling You'll Never Walk Alone. Stephen, who is known for his work on a string of TV series and films including Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance, Vigil and Mayflies, is making his Celtic The Musical debut. 'It's exciting – hopefully we're bringing something new and fresh to the show, a different dynamic,' he says. Julie Duncanson and Stephen McCole (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) 'It's a show really about how this club has been an anchor for families to share experiences, to cry together a bit, to support each other.' He grins: 'And I'm sure if my dad is watching somewhere, he'll be laughing his a**e off at me. If the lights start to go a bit funny in the middle of it, I'll know he's there …' (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Elysia Welch is also new to the production. The Southside-based actor, who plays Rosie, is delighted to be joining the show. 'I'm a Celtic fan, so I'm really excited,' she says, smiling. 'Rosie is sassy, she knows a lot about Celtic and she and her brother are constantly back and forth at each other, so it's a bit like me and my siblings. 'I can't wait.' Former River City star Julie Duncanson is reprising her role as Quinn family matriarch Mary. 'The audience makes the show – they bring all their love and enthusiasm and it's great to be part of that,' says Julie, who is from North Glasgow. (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Gary: Tank Commander star James Rottger is also returning to the production. 'This will make it four-in-row,' he says, wryly. 'Just like Celtic has just done. I feel like my character, Tommy, has aged with me along the way. 'It's a great show, always changing and staying fresh.' (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) Keith Warwick, who is a veteran of the production, having performed in it twice at the Pavilion, and at the Armadillo and on tour, agrees the show 'has to evolve' with each run. 'You want to keep it up to date and fresh, because the story of Celtic keeps going,' says the Govan-born actor. 'The main theme though does not change – it's about family, it's about refugees being made welcome in Glasgow because that's the roots of this club, and it's about the highs and lows of life.' Keith, who is well-known for a string of TV and stage roles including My Parents Are Aliens and The Bill, is a dyed-in-the-wool Celtic fan, so he is delighted to be talking about this in the home of his favourite club. He is also well aware of how much the story means to the fans. 'If I can just name-drop for a moment,' he says, mock-apologetically, 'Brendan Rodgers spoke to me at the last run and asked me if I got nervous waiting in the wings, because the atmosphere at this show is so raucous. 'I told him as a fan, I was over the moon, and so excited, but as a professional, you have to control yourself.' He adds, smiling: 'If you don't rein it in, the audience will take over and you'll just be singing songs all night. And people have got buses to catch.' Celtic The Musical will be at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow from September 4 to 27.
