LS Lowry painting originally bought for £10 sells for more than £800,000
The painting, Going To The Mill, was bought by literary editor of the Manchester Guardian, Arthur Wallace, for £10 in 1926 and has been in the same family ever since.
On Friday the artwork sold at auction at the Mall Galleries in central London for £805,200, including buyer's premium.
Lowry, who was lauded for his portrayal of everyday industrial scenes in northwest England, painted the piece in 1925.
Going To The Mill is marked on the back as being £30, but Lowry let Mr Wallace have it for £10.
It is believed to be one of the earliest sales made by the Stretford-born painter.
He also gifted him an additional work, The Manufacturing Town, which the family sold several years ago.
The artwork, which has been in the Wallace family for the last century, was recently on long-term loan to Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.
Simon Hucker, modern and contemporary art specialist and head of sale, Lyon And Turnbull auction house said: 'We're absolutely delighted by the price achieved for this exceptional, early painting by Lowry, bought from him when he was a virtual unknown.
'There are few artists who become a household name in Britain and Lowry definitely falls into this category.'
Mr Hucker added: 'This is a painting shows that Lowry at his conceptual best, no naive painter of 'matchstick men', as the old pop song went.
'Instead he is an artist of true dexterity who is making deliberate formal choices, abstracting the figure in order to express an idea about loneliness and isolation within the teeming city.
'Going To The Mill is the epitome of a 1920s Lowry, the period when he becomes a unique voice in British art.
'It is especially rare is for a painting such as this to have been in one collection for one year shy of a century and we are delighted to have played a small part in its history.'
In 2024 a Lowry painting titled Sunday Afternoon sold for almost £6.3 million at auction.

Hit musical about Celtic FC is coming back to Glasgow
'My dad saw this show at the Armadillo and loved it,' says the Castlemilk-born actor. 'He sadly died in May, so when I saw the auditions come up, I thought I'd try for a part and do it in his memory. I'm doing it for him.' Stephen is starring in Celtic The Musical, a reimagined version of the hit show which has been delighting audiences in Glasgow and on tour for almost a decade. The new cast of Celtic The Musical (Image: Gordon Terris/Newsquest) It is coming to the Pavilion in September, and the Glasgow Times was given exclusive access to the new cast as they met for the first time at Celtic Park in the East End. Celtic The Musical follows the life and times of the Quinn family, as they support their beloved club through the generations, from its founding by Brother Walfrid in 1888 through the heady days of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions, to Brendan Rodgers' present-day squad. Songs include fan favourites Hail Hail, Over and Over and the spine-tingling You'll Never Walk Alone. Stephen, who is known for his work on a string of TV series and films including Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance, Vigil and Mayflies, is making his Celtic The Musical debut. 'It's exciting – hopefully we're bringing something new and fresh to the show, a different dynamic,' he says. 'The main theme though does not change – it's about family, it's about refugees being made welcome in Glasgow because that's the roots of this club, and it's about the highs and lows of life.' Keith, who is well-known for a string of TV and stage roles including My Parents Are Aliens and The Bill, is a dyed-in-the-wool Celtic fan, so he is delighted to be talking about this in the home of his favourite club. He is also well aware of how much the story means to the fans. 'If I can just name-drop for a moment,' he says, mock-apologetically, 'Brendan Rodgers spoke to me at the last run and asked me if I got nervous waiting in the wings, because the atmosphere at this show is so raucous. 'I told him as a fan, I was over the moon, and so excited, but as a professional, you have to control yourself.' He adds, smiling: 'If you don't rein it in, the audience will take over and you'll just be singing songs all night. And people have got buses to catch.' Celtic The Musical will be at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow from September 4 to 27.

Legend of Zelda movie casts British actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth
The new film adaptation of the Legend of Zelda video game series will see two young British actors take on the leading roles, Nintendo has Nell star Bo Bragason, 21, has been cast as Princess Zelda, while Pinocchio's Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, 16, will play the role of Link. Announcing the news on X, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said he was "very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen".This will be the first attempt to make a Zelda film, although the franchise previously had an animated TV series in 1989. Bragason has previously appeared in Disney+ series Renegade Nell and the BBC series Three Girls and The Jetty. She has also appeared in horror films Censor and The Radleys. Ainsworth's screen credits include the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks, as well as The Haunting of Bly Manor, Everything's Going to Be Great, and All Fun and Games opposite Sex Education's Asa Butterfield. The Legend of Zelda film is scheduled to be released in May 2027. Director plans 'serious but whimsical' adaptation The game follows Princess Zelda and the elf-like warrior Link as they fight to save the land of Hyrule from an evil warlord-turned-demon king called the games, Link never speaks, but fans have speculated this won't be the case in the film. Similarly, Princess Zelda is expected to have significantly more screen time in the film adaptation than she does in the games. The live-action film was announced in 2023, when Sony confirmed it would collaborate with Nintendo to co-finance the will be directed by Wes Ball, best known for The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Maze Runner. Ball previously told Total Film: "I know it's important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie... a real movie that can give people an escape.""That's the thing I want to try to create – it's got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical."Jurassic World's Derek Connolly was previously announced as the film's writer, but the latest draft has been written by Ball's previous collaborator TS Nowlin. The Legend of Zelda game franchise was created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, with the first game launching in then, the franchise as remained one of Nintendo's best known brands, and has sold more than 150 million copies across its multiple instalments over various game adaptations have had a mixed reception at the box office over the years. Many, such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat, were not always as well received as their source more recently, the success of The Super Mario Bros Movie, Sonic The Hedgehog, A Minecraft Movie and Uncharted, along with the TV adaptation of The Last of Us, has gone some way to turning the tables. The film is being produced by Miyamoto and former Marvel Studios CEO Avi launch date of 7 May 2027 was originally due to be the release date of Avengers: Secret Wars, until it was delayed until December.
