Man Who Sent ‘I Raped You' Message Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault

A California man who attacked a fellow Pennsylvania college student in 2013 and years later sent her a Facebook message that said 'So I raped you' pleaded guilty on Thursday to sexual assault. The plea, in the Adams County Court of Common Pleas in Gettysburg, Pa., capped a case in which Shannon Keeler, 30, the woman who was attacked, spent years pressing the authorities to bring charges against the man, Ian Cleary. 32. Mr. Cleary attacked Ms. Keeler in her dorm room on the night of Dec. 15, 2013, when they were both students at Gettysburg College, kissing her and then having sex with her without her consent, prosecutors said. Years later, in 2019, Mr. Cleary sent Ms. Keeler a series of Facebook messages about the attack. The Adams County District Attorney's Office brought charges against Mr. Cleary in 2021, setting off a search that ended with his arrest in 2024 in France and his extradition to the United States in January. Under a plea agreement, Mr. Cleary will face a maximum possible sentence of four to eight years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Kevin A. Hess on Oct. 20, according to John Abom, Mr. Cleary's lawyer. Mr. Cleary can receive credit for his time in custody since his April 2024 arrest, Mr. Abom said. He is being held at the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Wall Street Journal: Birthday letter to Epstein bore Trump's signature, drawing of naked woman

A collection of letters gifted to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday in 2003 included a note bearing Donald Trump's name and an outline of a naked woman, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Thursday. The drawing, depicting a woman's breasts and a 'Donald' signature in the place of pubic hair, surrounded several lines of typewritten text, according to the newspaper, which reviewed the letter. It concluded with the line: 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.' Trump in an interview with the Journal on Tuesday denied that he wrote the letter or drew the picture and threatened to sue the newspaper if it published the story. 'I never wrote a picture in my life. I don't draw pictures of women,' he said, according to the Journal. 'It's not my language. It's not my words.' The White House did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. But the Wall Street Journal report is likely to further fuel scrutiny of Trump's handling of a Justice Department review of the Epstein case that has roiled his MAGA base and consumed the White House for several days. Epstein, a financier who socialized with a range of politicians and other powerful figures, was charged in 2019 with sex trafficking minors in Florida and New York. He was later found dead in his jail cell. Medical examiners ruled the death a suicide, but the circumstances have since spawned an array of conspiracy theories. In a memo last week, the Justice Department said Epstein did indeed die by suicide and that there was no Epstein 'client list' and announced it wouldn't release any more documents related to the case, infuriating an influential contingent of Trump supporters who believed the administration would make all of the Epstein files public. Trump has since angrily dismissed the backlash, accusing his supporters of falling for a 'hoax' by fixating on the case. He urged Republicans to drop the issue altogether. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker,' Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. According to the Wall Street Journal, the letter bearing Trump's name was included in a birthday album assembled by Ghislaine Maxwell, a close Epstein associate who was convicted of child sex trafficking in connection with Epstein. She collected the letters from Trump and dozens of others for Epstein's 50th birthday, the Journal reported. The album was later part of the documents examined by Justice Department officials who investigated Epstein several years ago, according to the newspaper. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Man arraigned on murder charge in Oregon for death of his then-girlfriend in 1980s cold case

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A man who is suspected in the disappearance of his then-girlfriend in the 1980s and was recently extradited from California to Oregon has been arraigned on a murder charge stemming from the cold case. Mark Sanfratello, 72, was arraigned Wednesday in Josephine County Circuit Court in southern Oregon after a grand jury indicted him for second-degree murder in the death of Teresa Peroni, the Oregon attorney general's office said in a statement. Sanfratello is being held without bail, according to online court records. His defense attorney, Elizabeth Baker, said he is 'claiming all the rights afforded him under the law.' Peroni disappeared in 1983 at age 27 after attending a party in a rural area near the small town of Selma. Authorities say she was last seen walking into the woods with Sanfratello, her boyfriend at the time. Authorities investigated, but there was not enough evidence to move forward with charges. In 1997 a human skull was found on a nearby property, which was then searched with the use of a cadaver dog, according to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. The skull was sent to the University of North Texas for examination. The sheriff's office reopened the case in 2024, with investigators collecting new DNA evidence and using modern forensic testing. With the additional DNA, experts at the university were able to confirm that the skull was Peroni's. Sanfratello was taken into custody last month in Chico, California. Investigators are still seeking information from anyone who attended the party. 'What happened to Teresa Peroni left her family with decades of uncertainty and grief,' Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said. 'While the legal process is now underway and it's important not to prejudge its outcome, this arrest reflects the progress that's possible when law enforcement agencies persist and evolve with new tools. It's a powerful reminder that time doesn't erase the need for answers.' It is the second recent Oregon cold case that has been linked to someone in California. State police said in May that a man who was found dead along Interstate 5 in Oregon had been identified after nearly 45 years and that notorious California serial killer Randy Kraft was the only person under investigation for the 1980 killing.
