Secret wartime tunnels below London to become a spy museum, memorial and bar

There is a part of London that few people have seen: a place where the city prepared for the Blitz, James Bond's creator got inspiration, and secret Cold War messages passed between Washington and Moscow.
It is a network of tunnels 100 feet (30 metres) below the streets that was secret for decades – but could be the city's next big tourist destination.
Local authorities have approved plans to fill the 90,000 sq ft (8,360 square metre) site with an intelligence museum, an interactive World War II memorial and one of the world's deepest underground bars.
'It's an amazing space, an amazing city,' says Angus Murray, chief executive of The London Tunnels, as underground trains rattle overhead. 'And I think it tells a wonderful story.'

The tunnels lie directly below London Underground's Central Line in the city's Holborn area. Work on them began in secret in 1940, when Britain feared invasion by Nazi Germany. They were designed to shelter up to 8,000 people from bombs in a pair of parallel tunnels 16.5 feet (5 metres) wide and 1,300 feet long.

Trump's unprecedented second state visit to UK confirmed for September

US President Donald Trump will make an unprecedented second state visit to the UK between September 17 and 19 when he will be hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace said on Monday. Advertisement Trump, who is a big supporter of the royal family, particularly of the monarch, will be accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump during the three-day visit, the palace confirmed. No US president has been invited for a second state visit. Trump previously enjoyed the pomp and pageantry of the state visit in 2019 during his first term when he was hosted by Charles' late mother, Queen Elizabeth The invitation for the second state visit from the king was hand-delivered by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in February during a meeting at the White House. After reading it, Trump said it was a 'great, great honour' and appeared particularly pleased by the fact he will be staying at Windsor Castle, to the west of the capital. 'That's really something,' he said. Advertisement Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W. Bush and Barack Obama State visits are ceremonial meetings between heads of state that are used to honour friendly nations and sometimes smooth relations between rivals. While the king formally issues the invitation for a state visit, he does so on the advice of the elected government.

Looking for luxury stays in London? The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Mandarin Oriental Mayfair offer unique experiences for the discerning traveller – and locations that are second-to-none

London is one of the few cities in the world to boast two Mandarin Oriental properties, and much like in the hotel chain's hometown of Hong Kong, they complement each other. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park opened its doors 25 years ago and has built a loyal following among Asian, Middle Eastern and American clients who like its proximity to the green expanse and the luxury shops of Knightsbridge, including the legendary department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London is situated in one of the capital's most prestigious areas. While the Hyde Park property marries British tradition with the warm, Asian-style service the company is known for, the Mayfair hotel is low key and discreet, eschewing grandeur for quiet luxury. Housed in a historic Edwardian structure first built in 1889 as a gentlemen's club and residence, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is always buzzing with international guests and stylish locals making a beeline for its popular eateries, which include the two-Michelin-starred Dinner by Heston Blumenthal – one of Britain's most celebrated chefs; the lovely Hyde Park Garden, a perfect spot for a drink or an informal meal in warm weather; and Japanese izakaya The Aubrey. Photo: Handout Designed by Hong Kong-based Joyce Wang , the rooms and suites combine art deco motifs with retro touches harking back to the 20th-century golden age of travel. Needless to say, the accommodations overlooking the park, some of them with balconies, are the most coveted among visitors. Views like these are priceless in a dense city like London, and the natural light on a sunny day truly makes a difference. If you're looking for panoramic views, the Mayfair property's rooms and suites will not provide any, but the hotel's focus on privacy, personalised service and discretion is just as appealing for discerning travellers. Sleek and urban, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is housed in a newly built red brick and glass structure in Hanover Square, a short walk from the luxury shops of Bond Street and more commercial Oxford Street. The rooms and suites are quite minimal when compared to those at Hyde Park but touches such as de Gournay hand-painted wallpaper and curvilinear sofas make them warm and welcoming. Award-winning Korean-born American chef Akira Back is the mastermind behind the two main restaurants – Akira Back and Dosa by Akira Back – while Abar Rooftop, on the top floor, features an outdoor terrace with great views of Mayfair and London's skyline.
