WWE Night of Champions big takeaways: Seth Rollins is the ultimate wild card

WWE Night of Champions big takeaways: Seth Rollins is the ultimate wild card

Yahoo4 hours ago

The vision for SummerSlam is beginning to come into picture after an eventful WWE Night of Champions 2025 event on Saturday at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
WWE crowned a new King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring, Solo Sikoa regained his footing, and Karrion Kross was finally provided space to earn more television time. As we unpack all that went down, with Saturday Night's Main Event right around the corner, here are our biggest takeaways from WWE Night of Champions 2025.
1. John Cena's greatest hits run continues
John Cena's final championship run has mapped out against essentially his greatest hits. In true goodbye tour fashion, his programs against Randy Orton, R-Truth and Punk served their purpose in providing the nostalgia fans expected. With a rematch against Cody Rhodes now slated for SummerSlam, the only ghost from Cena's past missing from this existing run was a showdown with Seth Rollins.

Mr. Money in the Bank made his presence felt in a chaotic main event — and he's someone who should certainly be waiting in the wings. While Cena ultimately came out on top despite interference from Rollins, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Sami Zayn and Penta, the path forward is less clear than it was coming into the night. What happens from here through December between the featured trio of Cena, Rhodes and Rollins serves as WWE's most intriguing storyline heading into the back half of the year.
2. King Cody Rhodes
Since losing the WWE championship at WrestleMania 41, Cody Rhodes' absence from WWE programming gave John Cena time to run through his past. Now back in the fold, Rhodes has swiftly regained his momentum and his upcoming tilt with Cena feels fresh again. With Cena vs. Rhodes 2 slated to headline the first-ever two-night SummerSlam, here's to hoping it lives up to the hype after their first match fell flat.

Saturday's finish to Rhodes vs. Orton — and the aftermath, as Rhodes gave an interview in the ring in front of a stewing Orton — also seems to allude to this being just the beginning of their potential rivalry. We'll see if "The Viper" plays any role in the build to SummerSlam.
3. Jade Cargill can taste championship gold
Jade Cargill's presentation in the WWE essentially since Day 1 has been building toward this moment.
Her WrestleMania 41 match against Naomi gave WWE confidence that she's ready for a championship run, and dispatching Asuka in a hard-hitting match to be crowned Queen of the Ring did more to boost her stature. Even still, Naomi waiting in the wings with the Money in the Bank briefcase promises to make her first chance at WWE gold as chaotic as ever.
4. Solo Sikoa's Bloodline is back
The leader of the renewed Bloodline, Solo Sikoa, desperately needed a strong showing at Night of Champions. Over the past six months he's fallen as a potential title contender, seen his program with Roman Reigns end, and ultimately Jacob Fatu leapfrogged him on his way up the WWE roster.

Sikoa needed some help, but a revitalized Bloodline giving Sikoa the United States Championship on Saturday makes him a threat once again. The rivalry with Fatu isn't close to being over, and with Sikoa now flanked by JC Mateo, Tanga Loa and the debuting Hikuelo, he's gotten his mojo back.
5. Karrion Kross earns his moment
Fans have been clamoring for Karrion Kross to get more television time, and him serving as the proverbial devil on Sami Zayn's shoulder was an excellent way to give him his sink or swim moment.
While nothing to write home about, the match served its purpose, gave Zayn his moment in front of the Riyadh crowd, and most importantly of all, furthered the movement to get Kross on television.

Another WWE Injury Plagues 'Monday Night Raw' Brand

Another WWE Injury Plagues 'Monday Night Raw' Brand originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The injury bug has plagued WWE as of late, and another "Raw" talent is out of action. On Monday's episode of the red brand, Chad Gable started a backstage brawl with Penta. The fight ended with Penta targeting Gable's arm with The Sacrifice submission. WWE staff broke up the scuffle, and Gable was on the ground in pain. Advertisement As it turns out, the segment may have been a way to write the current WWE Speed Champion off TV. reports that Gable has suffered a legitimate, undisclosed injury. Since details on the injury are scarce, there is currently no word on the timeline for Gable's recovery. Gable has also been performing under the El Grande Americano mask. The gimmick has led to more TV time for the seasoned veteran. He had been involved in a storyline with several lucha libre stars, and some fans speculated that the payoff would take place at "SummerSlam." Gable captured the WWE Speed title donning the El Grande Americano attire. If Gable ends up being stripped of the gold, it may be an indicator of the severity of his injury. His most recent match aired on June 17, and it was a successful title defense against Berto of Legado del Fantasma. Advertisement WWE has already been dealing with two key injuries, and both impacted stars perform on "Monday Night Raw." Liv Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder and will be out of action for several months. Morgan's onscreen boyfriend, Dominik Mysterio, remains on TV, but he also isn't medically cleared for in-ring action. Huge 'WWE Night of Champions 2025' Match Postponed Due to Injury

Huge 'WWE Night of Champions 2025' Match Postponed Due to Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. WWE has revealed that a big match previously scheduled for "Night of Champions 2025" is now off the card. Advertisement The initial plan was for Dominik Mysterio to defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship against AJ Styles in Riyadh on Saturday. During Monday's episode of "Raw," Adam Pearce informed Styles that Mysterio isn't medically cleared for the match. Styles was promised a title shot once Mysterio is ready to return to action. Mysterio hasn't competed since the June 9 episode of "Monday Night Raw." He lost a fatal four-way King of the Ring match featuring Sami Zayn, who ended up winning the match, Bron Breakker, and Penta. Mysterio remains involved in backstage segments on "Raw." He even appeared on TV during Monday's episode of the red brand. It would seem that Mysterio's injury isn't serious enough for WWE to strip him of the IC title. While Liv Morgan won't be featured on "Raw" for the foreseeable future, Mysterio figures to be an important part of the red brand as his storyline girlfriend recovers from an injury of her own. Advertisement WWE is in the midst of a storyline where Mysterio's faction, The Judgment Day, is on the verge of imploding. Balor has seemingly been tearing the group apart ever since Mysterio pinned him at "WrestleMania 41." Balor has introduced Roxanne Perez to the group, which has created tension. Morgan's tag team partner, Raquel Rodriguez, hasn't taken too kindly to Perez, and Mysterio has been uncomfortable with "The Prodigy's" advances. Time will tell how long it'll take before Mysterio is back in the ring. Related: 'WWE Raw' Results: Who Advances to King and Queen of the Ring Finals at 'Night of Champions 2025?' Kross has developed a following on social media. While some argue that the former "NXT" titleholder hasn't been utilized to his full potential, he has been able to snag consistent airtime in backstage segments. In recent months, he's been involved in a side program with Sami Zayn. Advertisement Fightful reports that Kross is currently in his contract year with WWE. Kross' deal is expected to expire this summer if there is no renewal. At this time, it's unclear whether or not WWE plans to offer Kross a contract extension. Karrion Kross involved in a singles match during an episode of "WWE Friday Night SmackDown."(via WWE) There has been some debate over whether or not Kross' rise in popularity is genuine. Kross has said that his own merchandise has sold out several times thanks to the support of fans. While some feel Kross has organically raised his stock, others, such as Voices of Wrestling, believe the hype has been overblown. Ultimately, WWE will make a decision on whether or not Kross' social media activity is enough to keep him on the roster. Perhaps it's good news for Kross that he's in the midst of a storyline with Zayn. For months, Kross has been trying to get Zayn to show his dark side to WWE fans. Advertisement While Zayn has had success as a heel in the past, he's currently a top babyface on the "Monday Night Raw" brand. Zayn has vowed to become a world champion one day, but Kross doesn't believe the longtime veteran can do it.
