
UAE to Lead COSPAS-SARSAT AI Working Group
In a landmark decision, the global COSPAS-SARSAT organisation has announced the formation of a new international working group focused on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in satellite-aided search and rescue systems. The announcement was made during a virtual session held on June 13, 2025.
The UAE has been appointed as chair of the newly established committee. This follows a series of successful international meetings hosted in Abu Dhabi from May 27 to June 5, 2025. During these sessions, key advancements in space-based search and rescue technologies were reported.
The UAE's National Guard Command, through the National Search and Rescue Centre, revealed a comprehensive working paper. This proposal laid the groundwork for the specialised committee.
According to COSPAS-SARSAT, the initiative aims to integrate AI into Mission Control Centre (MCC) operations. The goal is to boost the performance, speed, and accuracy of distress signal processing across satellite networks.
Key highlights of the AI integration include: Intelligent data analysis and cross-system integration
Faster global response times and improved mission efficiency
The proposal received strong support from representatives of 45 countries and major international organisations. These included the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Delegates commended the UAE's leadership in advancing humanitarian rescue capabilities using advanced technology.
Under the new framework, the UAE-led group will coordinate technical efforts among member states. It will also develop AI-driven tools for mission control systems and strengthen global preparedness in emergency operations.
The committee formally recognised the UAE for its strategic contributions to modernising the COSPAS-SARSAT system.
Moving forward, the working group will focus on setting global standards for AI use in satellite-based rescue. It will also promote knowledge sharing and invite new partners to join this forward-looking effort.
