‘Sore' Hogan in doubt to face the Eagles

Perth Now7 hours ago

A 'sore' Jesse Hogan is in doubt to face West Coast on Friday night, with Greater Western Sydney set to weigh up resting the Coleman Medallist for the trip west.
Hogan kicked nine goals last time he faced the Eagles in a baptism of fire for defender Sandy Brock on debut, as the Giants claimed an 81-point win at ENGIE Stadium in April.
The star forward was a noticeable absentee from training on Monday, watching on in a tracksuit.
Despite coming off the bye, GWS coach Adam Kingsley insisted it was merely a soreness issue for Hogan, who may be given an extra week off rather than travelling to Optus Stadium.
'There's a chance (he is rested),' Kingsley said.

Defender Lachie Whitfield is on track but no guarantee to get through concussion protocols.
'He was out there today so fingers crossed,' Kingsley said. 'He's still got to get through three or four more days. The 12th day (of concussion protocols) falls on game day.
'He's still got a few things to tick off before we clear him and we won't take any risks with him, clearly.'
West Australian Stephen Coniglio will make his injury return through the VFL after an extended stint on the sidelines following a nerve issue in his glute, while small forward Brent Daniels remains 'a while away' following an adductor setback.
The Giants are wary of an improved West Coast following a plucky effort against ladder-leaders Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday.
Kingsley said the signs were there that the Eagles' game plan under first-year coach Andrew McQualter was starting to click.
'They were pretty impressive. As the season wares on, the more their coach can have influence and educate, the more they can execute his plan under pressure and we're starting to see that unfold with them now,' Kingsley said.
'They're missing a couple of key players but were still really strong against the Pies. We've under no illusions, we've lost there in the past so we know every game is tough, we can't just walk in there and expect to win.'

West Coast Eagles get second Rising Star nomination with Clay Hall rewarded against Collingwood

It may have taken 14 rounds for West Coast to get their first Rising Star nomination, but young midfielder Clay Hall has made it two nods in three weeks for his efforts against Collingwood. In further signs the Eagles are beginning to trend in the right direction, Hall joined Tyrell Dewar in the race for the game's young star award. The 20-year-old has had to bide his time during 2025 but showed his clean skills and decision-making as the bottom-placed Eagles pushed league leaders Collingwood for four quarters in a 29-point loss. Matched up against the likes of Nick Daicos, Steele Sidebottom, and Scott Pendlebury, Hall collected 22 disposals and made the most of them, using the ball with an impressive 77 per cent efficiency. Hall also had three clearances. The Peel Thunder product, who grew up in the South West, debuted in round 21 last year with an impressive pedigree, being a Colts premiership player and the son of former Eagles and Geelong player Derek Hall. 'It feels good,' Hall, who's averaging 29 disposals in six WAFL games this year, said. 'It's always nice to get a little bit of personal recognition, but ultimately that's not what I'm here for. 'It's just nice to see the team starting to build some chemistry and starting to stamp our brand, which is really nice. 'We're building something great at this club which I'm really excited for.' Hall wasn't the only Eagle to impress in round 16, with debutant Jobe Shanahan catching the eye of Essendon great Matthew Lloyd. Lloyd suggested Richmond would regret allowing the 18-year-old to slip to pick 30, where West Coast were all too eager to pounce on the young swingman. 'Just the way he moved you thought 'gee, they've got one here',' he said on AFL All Access. 'I really liked the mobility of him. His foot skills were sensational. 'So, it's going to be a watch over the next 10 to 15 years because Richmond selected a number of forwards before him and Shanahan blew out. 'I've sort of followed his career a bit because he would play Essendon VFL when he was in the under-18 competition. He was kicking fours and fives at VFL level as an under-18 player. 'He has a beautiful kicking technique as well.' The Rising Star winner will be awarded the Ron Evans Medal at the 2025 AFL Awards.

‘They've got one here': Goalkicking legend's love for Eagle

West Coast debutant Jobe Shanahan kicked a composed goal to put the Eagles in front against Collingwood. One of the AFL's great goal kickers has lauded West Coast's latest forward talent, with Matthew Lloyd suggesting Jobe Shanahan could be one of the steals of last year's draft. Shanahan became the seventh Eagle to earn his wings in 2025 and instantly showed he belonged at AFL level in West Coast's spirited 29-point defeat to league leaders Collingwood. The 18-year-old threw himself into several marking contests early in the match before clunking one on the lead to set up his maiden major. Shanahan had even shown his versatility at WAFL level, having spent multiple weeks playing out of defence. However, Essendon champion Lloyd was enamoured with the youngster's forward craft, suggesting Richmond - who chose multiple forwards ahead of Shanahan before the Eagles swooped at pick 30 - may come to rue not selecting him. 'Just the way he moved you thought 'gee, they've got one here',' he said on AFL All Access. 'I really liked the mobility of him. His foot skills were sensational. 'He has a beautiful kicking technique as well.' Shanahan ended his debut with eight touches and three marks to go with his goal. Lloyd was not the only champion of the AFL to be impressed with the debutant, with former Collingwood coach and player Nathan Buckley full of praise for Shanahan's performance while on commentary. 'First, it's the timing to be able to lead up at the right time. Darcy Moore is no slouch in terms of intercepts and that's the second mark he's been able to take out basically at full tilt out in front of him. 'He's only 18, but he's a likely type. He's got really strong legs. He's going to grow and fill out really well. To be able to finish with that composure is excellent.'
