Sophie Cunningham piques interest of pro wrestling promotion: 'She takes down the competition'
The Indiana Fever guard is in her seventh WNBA season, but she's hit the big time ever since she started a ruckus in defense of Caitlin Clark.
Her fighting skills were put to the test, and a wrestling promotion apparently took notice.
Jeanie Buss, the former majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, is the co-owner of Women of Wrestling, and she is heavily intrigued by the WNBA star.
"We would love to have [Cunningham] join us at [WOW] she is talented, dedicated, and a fierce competitor!!" Buss posted on X earlier this week.
Buss' colleague, Dave McLane, also raved about Cunningham during a recent appearance at Comic Con in San Diego.
"I'm from Indiana. I'm from Indianapolis, and that's the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark. And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer. She's the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete," McLane said of Cunningham, via The Daily Mirror.
"I flew to Las Vegas and watched them in action against the Aces, and I would love to have Sophia Cunningham in WOW, because she takes down the competition, and she makes sure that Caitlin Clark is safe on the basketball floor. We'd love to have Sophie in WOW."
Cunningham, of course, drew the ire of WNBA fans in a game last month after she came to the defense of Clark, who was fouled earlier in the game, by committing a flagrant foul of her own, which resulted in a huge scrum on the court and ejections.
Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye. She was also pushed to the floor by Marina Mabrey. Cunningham wrapped up Sheldon under the basket on a hard foul in the fourth quarter, and the two were ejected.
"During that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build-up for a couple years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA," Cunningham told reporters days after the team lost to the Golden State Valkyries. "At the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do."

In their post, the league announced that Bueckers has been named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for the month of July. "Paige Bueckers of the @DallasWings is your @Kia Rookie of the Month AGAIN," the post read. "Bueckers went off for 18.2 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 5.2 APG in the month of July to earn her 2nd consecutive ROTM honors." Throughout the course of the entire season, Bueckers has played in 23 games. She has averaged 18.5 points per game to go along with 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals, while also shooting 45.4 percent from the floor and 34.1 percent from three-point range. As a comparison, Clark averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game in 40 appearances as a rookie and shot 41.7 percent overall and 34.4 percent from three-point range. Bueckers still has plenty of room to continue growing and developing her game, which is a scary thought for the rest of the league. The Minnesota Lynx are atop the WNBA standings by several games, and the woman in charge of the whole operation is getting her dues. The WNBA announced Monday that Cheryl Reeve is the league's Coach of the Month for July. The Lynx went 9-3 in July, capping the month with a 100-93 win over the New York Liberty, the WNBA's No. 2 team, in their first matchup since last year's finals. Minnesota averaged 87.8 points a game last month and allowed 78.5 points per game on defense — if maintained over a full season, both would top every other team in the league. Reeve is also coaching the league's leading MVP candidate, Napheesa Collier, to a career year. In July, Collier averaged 23.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.9 blocks a night. The superstar left Saturday's 53-point win over the Las Vegas Aces with an ankle injury, but Reeve said it's too soon to tell how severely she's hurt. Reeve, who also serves as the team's president of basketball operations, was named both Coach and Basketball Executive of the Year last season. The Lynx are 24-5 as of Monday.

Are the WNBA's Connecticut Sun going to stay put instead of moving to Boston? It seems as if the league is not wild about the notion of relocating the franchise to Massachusetts based on statements recently circulated in a release put out in response to the news that former Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has bought the Sun with intent to relocate the club to Boston. Now, according to recent reporting from MassLive's Kenneth Manoj, Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti related that the team has not, in fact, actually been sold to any party at present. "Contrary to some of the articles that were out yesterday, the team has not been sold," said Rizzotti on Sunday (Aug. 3). " ... unless it comes out of official Connecticut Sun or Mohegan Sun channels, it's not official." Rizzotti added that "any sale or relocation is subject to board approval, so ... non-disclosure agreement comes into play, so we're not allowed to actually talk about specific groups that we may have been talking to." "I can say that I have met personally with different investment groups over the last few months, and it's been a thorough process, and we're not quite at the finish line yet," said the Sun president, perhaps hinting that the alluded-to discussions might be more complex than we had been led to believe by earlier reports. For now, it seems that the league would prefer Boston get a franchise via expansion, suggesting that there could be an effort to sell the Sun, but keep them in their current market.
