Rwanda Marks 31st Liberation Day in Cairo
The Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Egypt commemorated the 31st anniversary of Liberation Day with a high-level diplomatic reception held at the Dusit Thani Hotel in New Cairo.
The celebration brought together Egyptian government officials, ambassadors, business leaders, scholars, and friends of Rwanda to honor the country's transformational journey from genocide to national renewal.
Known as 'Kwibohora', Liberation Day marks Rwanda's emergence from the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. On 4 July 1994, the Rwandan Patriotic Army, under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, ended one of the darkest chapters in the nation's history and laid the groundwork for peace, justice, and inclusive development.
In his keynote address, Rwandan Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. CG Dan Munyuza, emphasized that the significance of Liberation Day extends far beyond military victory.
'Liberation was not merely the end of a war,' said Ambassador Munyuza. 'It was the beginning of a new vision, a commitment to never return to tribal divisions, hatred, and despair.'
He also praised Egypt's continued solidarity, 'I would like to commend the government and the people of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the unwavering support towards Rwanda's transformation journey.'
Rwanda's post-liberation progress has been widely recognized. Over the past three decades, the country has rebuilt its institutions, invested in health, education, and innovation, and empowered women and youth. With consistent economic growth averaging 7 to 8 percent annually, Rwanda now ranks among Africa's most business-friendly nations.
Touching on regional challenges, Ambassador Munyuza highlighted Rwanda's commitment to peace in the Great Lakes region and welcomed the peace agreement signed recently between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Washington, D.C.
'Let this 31st Liberation Day commemoration be a reminder that from even the greatest pain, renewal is possible,' he stated.
The evening featured Rwandan music and cultural displays, along with exhibitions showcasing the country's tourism and investment opportunities. Guests were invited to discover Rwanda's famed attractions, including gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and wildlife safaris in Akagera.
The Guest of Honor, H.E. Prof. Hani Sewilam, Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, lauded Rwanda's transformation:
'Rwanda's extraordinary progress over the past thirty years is a true reflection of visionary leadership, national healing, and a steadfast commitment to inclusive growth and development.'
Minister Sewilam also announced a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding on Water Resources Management between Egypt and Rwanda. The agreement will focus on catchment protection, groundwater development, rainwater harvesting, and capacity-building to enhance climate resilience.
He further commended Rwanda's constructive role in regional water cooperation, particularly through its active participation in the Nile Basin Initiative.
'We strongly rely on Rwanda's constructive role... to enhance cooperation between [Nile Basin] states and maintain the sustainability of the Nile River, this vital common water resource,' he said.
The event reaffirmed the strong ties between Egypt and Rwanda and underscored a shared vision for regional stability, sustainable development, and pan-African progress. Guests were encouraged to view Rwanda as a key destination for trade, tourism, and technological innovation.

Hayat Egypt breaks ground on new hygiene products plant in SCZONE - Economy
Hayat Egypt Hygienic Products, S.A.E., a subsidiary of the global fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) giant Hayat, has laid the foundation stone for its new hygiene production facility in Ain El Sokhna, located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). Hayat is a global FMCG leader, producer of hygiene, tissue, home care, and personal health products to consumers in over 100 countries. It is the fourth largest branded baby diaper manufacturer in the world and the largest tissue manufacturer across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa. The high-level groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Salih Mutlu Şen, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Egypt; Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of SCZONE; Governor of Suez, Tarek Hamed El Shazly; and Senol Keserliogu, General Manager of Hayat Egypt, alongside senior officials and business leaders from both nations. The new factory is expected to employ over 400 Egyptian workers and will produce baby diapers and feminine hygiene products. Significantly, 75 percent of its output is earmarked for export markets, with the remaining 25 percent supplied domestically. The facility is scheduled to be fully operational by March 2026, boosting Hayat Egypt's hygiene production capacity by 55 percent. Speaking at the event, Mr. Senol Keserliogu, GM of Hayat Egypt, said: 'Egypt continues to be a strategic hub for Hayat's operations, and today's milestone reflects our promise to expand our footprint to meet both local and global demand.' Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen emphasised the broader context of Turkish investment in Egypt, noting, 'This investment affirms the trust Turkish companies have in Egypt's market potential and stable expansion environment.' From the SCZONE perspective, Chairman Walid Gamal El-Din highlighted the zone's growing attractiveness to foreign investors. According to Gamal El-Din, 'These investments reflect strong confidence in the SCZONE's investment climate. Thanks to upgraded infrastructure, world-class utilities, and streamlined digital services, we are creating a seamless environment for global companies to thrive. Hayat's expansion within the SCZONE reaffirms our role as a regional hub for industrial innovation and export-oriented manufacturing.' Echoing this sentiment, Governor Tarek Hamed El Shazly said: 'Laying the foundation stone for Hayat Egypt's new factory marks a new milestone that reflects the growing investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. We welcome all investments that contribute to driving development and creating job opportunities.' The facility is a key component of Hayat's strategic expansion plan, bringing the company's total investment in Egypt to $632 million. This development aligns with Egypt's national vision to increase high-value manufacturing, grow exports, and create sustainable employment in strategic sectors. US Court Halts Immigration Arrests in California
Israa Farhan A federal judge has ordered a temporary halt to random immigration arrests across seven counties in California, including Los Angeles, marking a significant legal setback for former President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Judge Mameé A. Frimpong issued two emergency orders as part of an ongoing lawsuit. The first blocks federal immigration agents from carrying out arbitrary arrests, while the second prohibits the government from limiting attorney access to detainees held at the Los Angeles immigration detention facility. The case, brought by immigrant rights groups, argues that these actions violate the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the US Constitution. During a recent hearing, advocates presented what the judge described as a mountain of evidence indicating systemic rights violations by federal authorities. In response, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, dismissed claims of racial profiling as completely false and offensive, stating that immigration enforcement is conducted with precision and due diligence. California Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed the court's decision, calling it a temporary victory for justice. Israa Farhan At least four people were injured during a mass shooting at a high school reunion event in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to reports from the New York Post.
