(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung today urged the finance ministry to consider exempting more fruits from the expanded sales and service tax (SST), particularly mandarin oranges and dates. He proposed that special SST exemptions be made for the two fruits during the Chinese New Year and Aidilfitri festive seasons, describing it as a targeted fiscal approach that would be sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of Malaysians. 'These two fruits are inseparable from major Malaysian festive celebrations – Chinese New Year and Ramadan, as well as Hari Raya Aidilfitri. 'Imposing a 5% tax on these fruits not only increases consumers' burden but also contradicts the core principle behind the expanded SST's implementation, which is to only target specific groups,' the PKR MP said in a statement. If the two fruits are not exempted, he said the expanded SST would place even greater pressure on small businesses and traders that rely on the seasonal demand for these fruits to cover operational costs. Lee's call followed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's announcement this morning that imported apples and oranges would be exempted from the expanded SST, which comes into effect on July 1. Although he believed that there was no need to consume imported fruits, Anwar acknowledged that many from among the B40 income group would buy apples and oranges, in part due to their affordability. The finance ministry previously said the expansion of the SST from July 1, including a 5% rate on imported fruits, was aimed at boosting local agricultural demand and strengthening food security. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sweet chocolate factory experience

VISITING a chocolate factory is a fun and educational experience, given the opportunity to learn about chocolate production, indulge in sweet treats and immerse oneself in the wonders of chocolate. The classic Cadbury Dairy Milk that Malaysians are familiar with are produced at Cadbury Confectionery Malaysia in Shah Alam, a plant that employs over 250 workers. Established in 1974, the Shah Alam factory is the sole manufacturing hub for Cadbury in Southeast Asia. It makes 130 types of chocolate, producing over 14 tonnes of chocolates annually, equivalent to 100 million 135g bars. With nine production lines, the factory spans 20,000 sq ft and is as big as five basketball courts. The plant has been certified halal since 1994 and adheres to the food safety and quality standards. It embraces sustainable practices through recyclable packaging, renewable energy and sustainable cocoa sourcing, supported by Mondelēz International's global Cocoa Life initiative, which promotes the improvement of farming, communities and our planet. Mondelēz International (Malaysia & Singapore) marketing head See Mei Sin said its cocoa is sourced from Indonesia, Ghana and Ivory Coast, as local production is insufficient. See said in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is its biggest market, while the central region (Klang Valley) is the biggest market locally, making up half of the consumption and the appetite for chocolate keeps growing every year. 'We are not scaling down production (amid the Middle East crisis),' she told the media at a factory tour yesterday, following the launch of a richer, creamier and more indulgent recipe for its Cadbury Dairy Milk. 'More and more consumers are craving for richer, creamier and chocolatey bars,' said See. This upgrade also introduces a new king size 200g bar and a redesigned chunk shape across the entire range. Cadbury Dairy Milk's Purple Truck is travelling across Malaysia from July 1 to Aug 31 – an initiative that aims to connect with communities and celebrate the simple pleasures of chocolate through activities, treats and experiences. Comprehensive Strategy Needed To Attract Younger Generation To Join UMNO

BUTTERWORTH, June 29 (Bernama) -- A comprehensive strategy is needed to ensure UMNO remains relevant to young voters under 40, who will constitute the majority group in the upcoming General Election, said UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. He said the initiative to engage with this group should not be the sole responsibility of UMNO Youth but instead, should be a collective effort involving the entire party machinery. 'This is a large group. They are critical thinkers and educated. If we don't craft the right strategy to engage them, we will continue to lose support.

Mohamad: BN to go into Sabah polls as a solid team

Mohamad Hasan speaking after officiating the UMNO Ledang Division Delegates' Meeting. – Bernama photo TANGKAK (June 29): Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest the Sabah state election as a solid team, said its Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. Mohamad, who is also Umno Deputy President, said the coalition is currently exploring cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) as well as understandings with local parties in Sabah in preparation for the upcoming state polls. 'We are exploring cooperation with PH in Sabah because BN cannot go it alone there, so we need partners to face the state election. We are still considering various aspects, especially seat distribution. 'We don't want confusion. We want to be a strong team, so that voters are not confused and will give their support to strong parties that can govern Sabah,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Umno Ledang Division Delegates' Meeting, which was also attended by Umno Ledang Division chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Talib at Dewan Putra Padang Lerek here today. Meanwhile, in Penang, Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said the wing is conducting a detailed sentiment study to understand voter trends and grassroots feedback, which will be channelled directly to central, division and 'war room' leaderships. She said the sentiment analysis is being conducted continuously across the country to strengthen the party, and not just for elections. 'For the Sabah state election, the sentiment study has been completed and we leave it to the leadership to disclose the findings,' she said when met after officiating the Kepala Batas Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri Division Delegates' Meeting at Kubang Menerung in Kepala Batas. Noraini, who is also Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, said for the Sabah polls, Wanita Umno is moving in step with the state Umno to ensure the election machinery is always at peak readiness. She said Umno has a well-organised structure with task distribution among the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings to ensure all operations run smoothly and with focus. 'In fact, each wing – Wanita, Youth and Puteri – has its own specific role, but the real strength comes from coordination and teamwork,' she said. The five-year term of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly is set to dissolve automatically on November 11, paving the way for the 17th Sabah State Election to be held. – Bernama barisan nasional Mohamad Hasan Sabah state election
