Portuguese-born Everton stars lay wreaths at Anfield as Toffees pay respects to Liverpool star Diogo Jota

Daily Mail04-07-2025
Portuguese-born Everton stars Youssef Chermiti and Beto laid wreaths at Anfield on behalf of the club and paid their respects to Diogo Jota following his tragic death.
The Liverpool forward died on Thursday alongside his brother when his Lamborghini had a tyre blow out while overtaking another vehicle on the A-52 at Cernadilla near Zamora - just ten miles over the border from Portugal.
The car is said to have rolled and burst into flames, with emergency services unable to save the footballing duo. Jota's brother, Andre Silva, 26, played for Portuguese second division side Penafiel.
Jota and Silva were headed to Santander to catch a ferry to Britain after Diogo was advised not to fly following lung surgery, it was reported in his home country.
Jota's untimely death sent shockwaves through the footballing world on Thursday. Throughout the day, back in Liverpool, fans gathered in their hundreds to lay and pay their own tributes to the 28-year-old.
This continued into Friday, as those associated with the club mourned for the father-of-three. That afternoon, the two Toffees stars, accompanied by former Toffees midfielder Ian Snodin, contributed to the Anfield tribute.
Beto and Chermiti both played for the Toffees in April's Merseyside derby which was decided by Jota's final goal.
Earlier, former Reds skipper Jordan Henderson fought back tears as he laid flowers and a Liverpool scarf at Anfield in tribute of his ex-team-mate.
The England international, now playing for Dutch giants Ajax, left a heartfelt note to his former team-mate in the bouquet he brought to the site, which read: 'Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you. Love Hendo + family.'
His death, which cast clouds of sorrow over the footballing world, came just two weeks after he married his girlfriend and mother of their three kids Rute Cardoso in Porto, his home city.
Current Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk promised to always be available for his family in a moving statement saying he was 'absolutely devastated and in total disbelief' to lose his team-mate of five years.
Elsewhere, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, who forged an incredible connection with the forward during their five years together at Anfield and was also present at Jota's wedding almost two weeks ago, wrote: 'The ones I'm thinking about most right now are the family.
'Their loss is too much to bear. I'm so sorry that they have lost two such precious souls – Diogo and Andre.
'For the team and the Club, we'll try to cope with this together… however long that takes. For me, I want to talk about my mate. My buddy. The bloke I loved and will miss like crazy.'
Jota played 182 games for Liverpool and was part of the Premier League title-winning squad from last season under Arne Slot.
Doctors had reportedly advised Jota not to catch a plane after a recent operation, so he was getting a boat back to England instead. A Brittany Ferries service from Santander to Plymouth left at 4pm BST on Thursday, arriving in Devon at 11.15am on Friday.
According to Record, Jota and new wife Rute attended a friend's wedding over the weekend and had been celebrating together.
The lamborghini crash happened on the A-52 in the province of Zamora. The Spanish dual carriageway is a key route taken by drivers after leaving northern Portugal as they head for the ports of Santander and Bilbao or drive north-east towards France.
Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash and two fatalities at around 12.35am on Thursday. Diogo and Andre's deaths were then confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation at around 8am.
Wreckage at the scene suggested the brothers were driving to the UK in a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder.

Newcastle team-mates look forward to Alexander Isak return ‘when he's fit'

Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes are hoping Alexander Isak will choose to stay with them at Newcastle amid reports he has asked to explore a move away. The Sweden international did not travel with the rest of the Magpies squad for a pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating this was due to a minor thigh injury. Hours later reports emerged that Isak, who has been linked with a big-money move to Liverpool, had told club executives he wanted to look at a transfer away from St James' Park. Burn, speaking from Singapore ahead of Newcastle's match against Arsenal on Sunday, told Sky Sports News: 'If we lost any player it would upset a tight-knit group that's been together for two or three years now. 'Obviously any player that leaves, it doesn't help, but from our point of view (we have to) just control what we can control. 'At the moment we're looking forward to getting Alex back when he's fit.' Brazilian midfielder Guimaraes added: 'We want to keep our best players. (Isak) is not here because he's in treatment in Newcastle. 'He is a top striker, his (record over the) last three seasons speaks by itself, he's a top player. But as far as I know he just stayed there because of his injury, his treatment with the club.' Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer said the club had made themselves look 'ridiculous' by citing injury as the reason for Isak's absence. The club have yet to comment on reports Isak has asked to leave. Isak scored 23 goals for Newcastle last season and still has three years left on his current contract.

Alexander Isak to Liverpool: Newcastle striker's three options after transfer bombshell

Alexander Isak has told Newcastle he wants to leave in the summer transfer window after having his head turned by Liverpool's enquiries - and now his future will be decided Alexander Isak has gone public with his desire to leave Newcastle this summer after having his head turned by interest from Liverpool. The 25-year-old striker has been omitted from Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour and has become the biggest story in the summer transfer window. ‌ Isak is arguably the best striker in the Premier League, having scored 23 times in the top flight last season for Newcastle. He still has three years left on his current contract with Newcastle, but is clearly unhappy with his situation on Tyneside – despite what Eddie Howe says. ‌ The Sweden international has gone public with his desire to 'explore opportunities' in the transfer market after growing irritated with his status at Newcastle. He has scored 62 goals in 109 games since joining from Real Sociedad for £63million in August 2022, underlining his status as one of the best in the business. ‌ Yet he is currently paid around £120,000 per week by the Magpies and knows he could achieve much more elsewhere. He has reportedly demanded £300,000-a-week to sign a new contract with Newcastle, who would have to shatter their wage structure to make that happen, with Bruno Guimaraes the highest earner on £160,000-a-week at present. On the one hand, Newcastle are under little pressure to sell Isak, because they are in line with profit and sustainability rules and he is contracted for three more years. But keeping an unhappy player is fraught with complications and they are reportedly only willing to give him £200,000-a-week. That is Isak's first option: signing a new contract with Newcastle and spending at least another season there as they embark upon another season in the Champions League. Right now, though, that doesn't appear likely. His second option is Liverpool, who made enquiries about Isak's availability last week before signing Hugo Ekitike and remain interested. The Reds have splashed £265m on transfers this summer, but still have money in the bank to spend on Isak, thanks to their quiet summer of 2024, Premier League prize money and assets they can sell. It would take a record transfer of over £125m to make it happen, but with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott available to sell, it could happen. Isak is understood to prefer a move to Anfield, where he could play alongside Ekitike, Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz in a new-look attack. ‌ Isak's third option is one that has been mulled over by many Premier League stars in recent years: moving to Saudi Arabia. With Newcastle owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, that avenue would appear to be open. Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are reportedly able to offer staggering wages of around £500,000 a week after tax for the striker. The club have already lured Aleksandar Mitrovic, Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves and Kalidou Koulibaly with their lucrative offers in the past, but Isak would represent an even bigger coup. ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! Where will Alexander Isak end up? Comment below. 'Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal,' Howe said on the weekend after the Celtic no-show. 'I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him.' That noise is not going to go away until Isak's future is decided. His preference is clear. Now the ball is in Liverpool's court.
