PIF assets rise 18% to $1.15tn as portfolio firms drive growth

Arab News6 days ago
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund boosted its total assets to SR4.32 trillion ($1.15 trillion) by the end of 2024, an 18 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to a disclosure filed with the London Stock Exchange.
The sovereign wealth fund reported gross revenues of SR413 billion for 2024, reflecting a 25 percent year-on-year rise. This growth was fueled by solid performance across several portfolio companies, including Savvy, Ma'aden, stc, Saudi National Bank, AviLease, and Gulf International Bank, as well as dividend income from Saudi Aramco.
PIF, often described as the financial engine of Saudi Arabia, plays a central role in advancing the Kingdom's Vision 2030 goals to diversify the economy and reduce dependency on oil income.
'Long-term projects, that are beginning to mature, are also now generating significantly more revenue,' the disclosure document stated.
Despite global macroeconomic challenges such as high interest rates, inflationary pressure, and select asset impairments, the fund reported a net profit of SR26 billion in 2024.
The filing clarified that the impairments were 'primarily related to changes to operational plans and increases in budgeted costs and represent less than a 2 percent reduction in total assets.'
PIF's cash reserves held steady at SR316 billion, while loans and borrowings rose modestly to SR570 billion, reflecting continued diversification of its funding sources via international capital markets.
In 2024, the fund issued $2 billion in dollar-denominated sukuk and launched its first-ever sterling bond worth £650 million ($825.5 million). It also refinanced a $15 billion revolving credit facility, underlining market confidence in its creditworthiness and long-term investment outlook.
PIF's debt ratio remained unchanged at 13 percent by the end of the year, the disclosure noted.
'Over 2024, PIF continued to advance its position as one of the world's most impactful investors, while driving economic transformation in Saudi Arabia,' the document added.
It highlighted strategic progress in sectors such as leisure and tourism, industrial capabilities, capital markets, and the development of new industries.
Among standout performers, AviLease recorded a 350 percent surge in net profit to SR228 million and a 306 percent rise in revenue to SR2.1 billion. The aircraft leasing company expanded its fleet to 189 aircraft, comprising 163 owned, 22 managed, and four on order.
Meanwhile, Alat — another PIF-backed firm — invested SR401 million to establish an AI-driven robotics manufacturing facility in the Kingdom through a joint venture with SoftBank Robotics.

Riyadh financial hub earns Guinness Record for 15.46 km pedestrian skyway

RIYADH: The King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh was awarded a Guinness World Record on Sunday for the world's largest continuous pedestrian skyway network. The network spans 15.46 km, linking 95 buildings through 42 climate-controlled skywalks, allowing year-round pedestrian access. Elevated above ground and connected to Riyadh's metro, the skywalks help workers, visitors, and residents move easily through the district while avoiding traffic and weather. Built with 30,000 sq. meters of glass and more than 3,000 tonnes of steel, the project required more than 5 million safe work hours from 1,200 personnel. The skywalks connect offices, homes, shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making it easier to walk between work, home, and leisure. 'This recognition by Guinness World Records affirms KAFD as a platform for urban development,' said Faddy AlAql, chief asset delivery officer at KAFD Development and Management Co. 'The skywalk network reflects a mobility strategy that connects assets, enhances walkability, and supports our goal of delivering a smart city experience.' Mbali Nkosi, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, said: 'First set in Minneapolis in 2016, this record has now been redefined by KAFD. In an era where sustainability drives innovation, KAFD's skyway network sets a new benchmark for walkable urban design.' The district hosts more than 90 international and local companies and 19 regional headquarters, including Goldman Sachs, Bain & Company, and PepsiCo.

Saudi Arabia's Booming Tourism Fuels Hotel Bookings and Local Hiring

Saudi Arabia's tourism sector has continued its rapid growth, driving record demand for hotels and hospitality services and creating new jobs across the Kingdom. The Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) reported that hotel occupancy rose 2.1% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, reaching nearly 63%. In contrast, serviced apartments saw occupancy dip to about 50.7%, reflecting shifting visitor preferences and price dynamics. Talal Al-Muhaideb, General Manager of Al-Sarh Travel and Tourism, said his company recorded a 28% jump in bookings, including hotels, flights, and tours, compared with the same period last year. He attributed the surge to Saudi Arabia's rising profile as a destination, improved infrastructure, and more sophisticated tourism offerings. He noted that Gulf and Asian travelers drove much of the demand, with bookings concentrated in hotels rather than serviced apartments. 'Visitors are coming for leisure, cultural experiences, business, and major events,' he underlined. Al-Muhaideb added that Saudis now make up 48% of management roles at the company, with plans underway to increase local hiring in line with Vision 2030 targets. 'We have an ambitious strategy to expand recruitment and empower Saudi talent across all departments,' he explained. Tourism specialist Abdullah Al-Suqabi stressed the importance of training partnerships with institutes specializing in hospitality and hotel management to further develop Saudi staff. 'Skill development is essential to strengthening the sector and boosting local employment,' he said. Technology is also reshaping the industry. Faisal Al-Otaibi, an investor in the Jathir Inn rental platform, noted that the app has seen rising demand thanks to secure payment systems and transparent pricing. 'Bookings have climbed significantly, and the growth has directly increased my revenues,' he said, adding that travelers now arrive year-round from across the country. Average daily hotel rates slipped to 477 riyals ($127), down 3.4%, while serviced apartment rates rose 7.2% to 209 riyals ($55). The figures suggest changing demand patterns and possibly a more diverse customer base. Guest stays in hotels held steady at 4.1 nights, while serviced apartment stays declined to an average of 2.1 nights. Overall, the tourism sector recorded 4.1% employment growth in the first quarter, with Saudis representing nearly 25% of the workforce - totaling 234,000 Saudi employees working across nearly a thousand tourism businesses.

Qassim shines as date harvest fills local markets

JEDDAH: Qassim region is abuzz as the early date harvest begins, yielding more than 50 varieties and filling local markets, reaffirming the region's role as a major center for date cultivation and marketing in the Kingdom. According to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Qassim contributes more than 390,000 tonnes annually to Saudi Arabia's total date production. This output strengthens its leadership in food security and boosts Saudi agricultural exports, the Saudi Press Agency reported. With more than 11 million palm trees, Qassim produces popular varieties such as sukari, barhi, saggi, ajwa, khalas, mabroom, safawi and anbari. This abundance supports local food security and supplies dates to more than 100 countries worldwide, the SPA added. Date farmer Abdulaziz Al-Baridi praised the support farmers receive from the ministry branch in Qassim, including education on irrigation techniques and pest control, and preparation of markets for date trade. As the harvest gains momentum, preparations are underway for the Buraidah Dates Festival. It is expected to boost economic activity, raise nutritional awareness, and strengthen market links between farmers and consumers. The festival aligns with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 by promoting agricultural sustainability and diversifying the economy.
