Chandra Barot, best known for directing Amitabh Bachchan's Don, passes away at 86

Indian Express20-07-2025
Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot passed away at the age of 86 following a prolonged battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Best known for directing Amitabh Bachchan's all-time blockbuster Don (1978), which went on to inspire multiple remakes and legacy sequels across various languages, Barot reportedly breathed his last at a hospital in Bandra, Mumbai, on Sunday.
Confirming his passing, the filmmaker's wife Deepa Barot told Times of India, 'He had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years.' Upon hearing the news, actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, who helmed the 2006 remake of Don, took to social media to express his grief. 'Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family,' he shared along with a photo of the director.
Born in Tanzania, Chandra Barot and his family moved to India in 1967 due to racial unrest in East Africa. After working as an assistant director on a few films, he made an enviable debut with Don, written by legendary screenwriting duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar (popularly known as Salim–Javed). Not only was the film a massive commercial success, but it also became one of the most beloved action thrillers in Indian cinema history. Besides helping cement Amitabh Bachchan's status as a superstar, it was also remade across multiple languages, with the biggest stars of the respective industries stepping into the central dual roles.
While Don was remade in Telugu as Yugandhar (1979) starring NT Rama Rao (NTR), in Tamil, it became Billa (1980) with Rajinikanth. The film marked a turning point in the Tamil actor's rise to superstardom. The Malayalam version, Shobaraj (1986), featured Mohanlal in the lead role.
Years later, Javed Akhtar's son Farhan Akhtar rebooted the film with Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role. Much like the OG version, the remake also became a massive hit, leading to a successful sequel in 2011. A third instalment, Don 3, starring Ranveer Singh, is currently in the works. Billa also inspired its own franchise, with a Telugu remake in 2009 starring Prabhas and Tamil reboots in 2007 and 2012 starring Ajith Kumar.
Despite Don's success, Chandra Barot couldn't capitalise on its momentum. He later directed the Bengali films Aashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991). Several of his other projects, including Boss and Neil Ko Pakadna… Impossible, remained incomplete or unreleased.

Big-budget clash with south films to test Bollywood mettle

Bollywood's theatrical revival faces a crucial test in the latter half of 2025 as big-budget Hindi films clash with highly anticipated southern releases. With films like 'War 2' and 'Coolie' vying for audience attention, the box office battle could significantly impact revenue, potentially costing each film ₹20-40 crore in North India alone. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Mumbai: A clash for box office share between big-budget Hindi and southern films in the next few months will put the theatrical revival of Bollywood to the test, say producers and trade big southern films-Coolie (Tamil), Kantara: Chapter 1 (Kannada) and The Raja Saab (Telugu)-are scheduled for release in the second half of 2025. Their release dates clash directly with Bollywood movies War 2, Ikkis, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and each of these films having an estimated budget of ₹150-400 crore, the stakes are second half of 2025 began on a promising note for Bollywood with the unexpected success of the mid-budget Saiyaara, which has raked in ₹175 crore in box-office collections since its July 18 release. But the market dynamics will be different for the upcoming releases. This is the first time since the pandemic when the release dates of big southern films are clashing with Hindi films of similar scale."Post-pandemic, the lines between regional and Hindi films have blurred," said producer and film business expert Girish Johar. "Today, audiences want the best content. So, if there is a formidable southern film aimed at a pan-India audience ... it does impact the box office potential of the competing Hindi film."Bollywood producers often avoid clashes with southern films, as loyal audiences of southern films shun Hindi movies to watch their favourite stars on screen. A blockbuster pan-India film form the south could reduce the box office potential of a competing Hindi film by 10-20%, according to trade experts."When tentpole films clash, the impact at the box office is far deeper than just opening-day collections," said Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director of Karmic Films. "Screens are shared. Show timings are compromised. In north India alone, a high-stakes clash can mean a ₹20-40 crore loss in revenues for each film."Revenue from digital, satellite and overseas rights will also take a hit, say distributors. They suggest a solo release of a big-budget Hindi or southern film as a practical solution."A well-timed solo release can improve legs at the box office, optimise holdover weeks and elevate a film from a ₹300 crore hit to a ₹500 crore blockbuster," said Wadhwa of Karmic Films."Clashes are always bad for business," said Rajesh R Nair, the producer of Hindi films such as Kaminey and Adipurush. Southern films are tracking well, especially Kantara: Chapter 1, one of the most awaited sequels, he said. He also expects strong competition to the upcoming Bollywood movies from Rajinikanth's Coolie and the Prabhas-starrer horror-comedy: The Raja trade analysts believe that the timing of these releases may work in their favour, as these will be released on public holidays when footfalls are usually high in theatres."Also, the genres of these competing films are different. These films will be accommodated," said Girish Wankhede, a movie trade analyst. But in the long run, he said "only the content of these films will work".While the success of Saiyaara was encouraging, theatres also recorded noteworthy contributions from Hollywood films such as Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Apart from Indian films, Hollywood movies such as Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash are also scheduled for release in the second half of to media and entertainment research firm Ormax Media, the second half of 2025 is likely to contribute 52% to the all-India box office revenue of ₹13,500 crore estimated for 2025.

Did you know Amitabh Bachchan was replaced by Vinod Khanna in Shaque after 16 flops? Aruna Raje reveals producer didn't want him

Before becoming Shahenshah, Amitabh Bachchan faced numerous setbacks. He was dropped from films like Shaque and Duniya Ka Mela due to his initial box office failures. Director Aruna Raje Patil revealed that Vinod Khanna replaced Bachchan in Shaque. Raza Murad mentioned Sanjay Khan replaced Bachchan in Duniya Ka Mela. Zanjeer became a turning point after Jaya Bhaduri suggested his name. Long before he became the legendary 'Shahenshah' of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan faced a string of disappointments that nearly ended his acting journey before it began. With 16 flops behind him, the future superstar was once deemed too risky by producers—so much so that he was replaced in multiple films, including the 1976 thriller Shaque. Why Bachchan was dropped from Shaque In a recent interaction, acclaimed director-editor Aruna Raje Patil revealed that Amitabh was originally considered for the lead in Shaque, but was ultimately replaced by Vinod Khanna due to his struggling box office run at the time. Filmmaker Aruna Raje Patil recently reflected on a pivotal casting change during the making of her 1976 film Shaque. Initially, Amitabh Bachchan was set to star opposite Waheeda Rehman . However, due to his then-unfavourable box office track record—marked by 16 consecutive flops—the film's producer, NB Kamat, was unwilling to move forward with him in the lead role. Faced with the possibility of the film being shelved, the team decided to look for a more bankable star. They eventually approached Vinod Khanna, who was already enjoying commercial success at the time. The actor quickly agreed to take on the role, leading to the replacement of Bachchan just before his breakthrough with Zanjeer in 1973. Another film replacement In a past interview with The Filmy Charcha, veteran actor Raza Murad recalled another instance highlighting Amitabh Bachchan's early struggles in the film industry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He shared that Bachchan was dropped from the film Duniya Ka Mela and replaced by Sanjay Khan due to a series of box office failures. At the time, with 16 flops behind him, distributors reportedly lacked confidence in Bachchan's ability to draw audiences, believing his presence would hurt the film's prospects. It wasn't until Zanjeer turned his fortunes around that his career took a dramatic upward turn, proving that persistence—and timing—can change everything. It was a twist of fate that eventually landed Amitabh Bachchan the lead role in Zanjeer—the film that would redefine his career. As veteran actor Raza Murad recalled, director Prakash Mehra initially approached several top stars of the time, including Dilip Kumar , Dharmendra, Dev Anand, and Rajkumar, but each declined the offer for various reasons. Success of Zanjeer Despite Zanjeer being a hero-centric script, it struggled to find a leading man—until Jaya Bhaduri (later Jaya Bachchan) suggested Amitabh's name. With no other options left, Mehra took a chance on the struggling actor. That stroke of luck, coupled with Bachchan's powerful performance, changed the course of Hindi cinema—and earned him the title of Bollywood's 'Angry Young Man.' After the success of Zanjeer, Amitabh Bachchan's career skyrocketed. He formed a legendary collaboration with writers Salim-Javed, delivering a series of iconic films like Deewaar, Sholay, Kaala Patthar, Trishul, Majboor, Shakti, and Don.
