Yankees bolster outfield, acquire veteran Austin Slater from the White Sox
The Yankees acquired the veteran outfielder from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitching prospect Gage Ziehl.
The Yankees have a pressing need to bolster their outfield ranks with star Aaron Judge out indefinitely while dealing with a flexor strain in his right elbow.
The 32-year-old Slater hit .236 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 51 games with the White Sox this season. The well-traveled Slater can play all three outfield positions. He spent the first seven-plus seasons of his career with San Francisco before being traded to Cincinnati last summer. New York will be Slater's fifth team in just over a year.
The Yankees will assume $564,516 of Slater's remaining $1.75 million salary, which also will increase their luxury tax by about $621,000.
The trade is the latest in what has been a busy run-up to Thursday's deadline by New York. The Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from Colorado and infielder Amed Rosario from Washington over the last week.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam in Philadelphia's eight-run sixth inning, and the Phillies pounded the Baltimore Orioles 13-3 win on Monday night. Islanders sign No. 1 pick Schaefer to 3-year, entry level contract
The New York Islanders have signed No. 1 draft pick Matthew Schaefer to a three-year, entry level contract. The team announced the deal Monday right around the time the young defenseman threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Mets' home game against the Cleveland Guardians. Schaefer is set to turn 18 next month just before training camp begins. "Feels amazing," Schaefer said at Citi Field. "Obviously, it's something I've wanted to do my whole life and to do it your first year — there's still a lot of work, but that was my dream and I want to play in the NHL this season. I wanted to really badly. I know there's going to be a lot of hard work that comes with it, but I think I'm ready." Signing him to a contract does necessarily mean Schaefer is guaranteed to play this season in the NHL. The Islanders could decide to send him back to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. Representing Canada at the world junior championships in late December and early January is also a possibility. Dodgers activate Max Muncy from injured list, but also put Tommy Edman on the shelf
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Max Muncy from the injured list and put fellow infielder Tommy Edman on the list Monday. Muncy has been out since July 2, missing nearly five weeks with a bone bruise in his knee after a collision on a tag play during a game against the Chicago White Sox. The veteran slugger had been on a monthlong roll at the time of his injury, boosting his OPS to .832 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs. Muncy returned more quickly than the initial six-week projection for his recovery. He was batting fifth and playing third base at Dodger Stadium on Monday night when Los Angeles opened a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals.
