Saifuddin: AKPS to deliver more efficient border management over time
Saifuddin said the agency, established to streamline and strengthen border enforcement, is still in its early stages, operating under a unified command structure.
"As this is a new initiative, agencies that previously operated separately are now working under one roof, under a single command," he said during a Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house ceremony here today.
Saifuddin expressed confidence that AKPS would deliver improved outcomes over time, as its personnel adapt to their new roles and responsibilities.
He said the agency was founded to fulfil three main objectives: facilitating smoother border crossings, enhancing the efficiency of service delivery, and upholding integrity in border management.
"The first goal is for border control to function smoothly and efficiently - both for the movement of people and goods. It must ensure seamless mobility.
"The second is that, as a single agency, AKPS will be able to offer a more efficient service delivery system, unlike the previous arrangement where the public had to deal with multiple agencies.
"And the third, which is often emphasised, is to strengthen integrity," he said.
The agency began operations at the Rantau Panjang checkpoint on Jan 1 and has since expanded to 22 entry points nationwide.
"We have 123 entry points in total, and the first operation was launched in Rantau Panjang. Today, AKPS is active at 22 of those locations. Eventually, all remaining entry points will be brought under the agency's jurisdiction," Saifuddin said.
He added that AKPS would also gradually adopt its own identity and official uniform.
"For now, officers wear only the agency insignia on their sleeves, but in time, they will be fully outfitted," he said.
AKPS was officially established following the enactment of the Border Control and Protection Agency Act on Oct 17, 2024.
It functions as the sole border control agency, consolidating the expertise and resources of various government agencies, including Immigration and Customs, to streamline operations at the country's international entry points.
In addition, AKPS has also absorbed officers and personnel from the police, Immigration Department, Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), Health Department, Road Transport Department, and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis).

Saifuddin: Immigration Dept must embrace AI to raise quality of delivery, efficiency
Saifuddin also suggested that the department send officers and personnel to follow special AI courses or programmes at local universities for a period of time. – Bernama photo PUTRAJAYA (July 21): The Immigration Department must embrace the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in services to raise the quality of delivery to the public and efficiency of department operations. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said AI integration in the department would indirectly boost productivity and revenue collection for the country. 'Previously, the Immigration Department didn't embrace but now it does so what's going to happen? Firstly, productivity will go up. Secondly, a faster delivery system and thirdly, if it relates to revenue collection, that will go up as well. This is the measure that we must look at when we talk about embracing AI,' he said during his speech when officiating the 103rd Immigration Day, with the theme 'AI leading Immigration Reforms', here today. He also suggested that the department send officers and personnel to follow special AI courses or programmes at local universities for a period of time. 'Give them leave for a week or two and introduce them to AI-related knowledge. Develop skills to use the rapidly-developing AI tools. For instance, most globally renowned companies using AI technology include Alibaba from China,' he said. Saifuddin said that the Immigration Department needed to implement people-centric approaches and improvements in its service in line with the intentions of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'Our approach must be people-centric, At the core, it's the people, that's why we need to have improvements to procedures and make things simpler. 'Wherever misconduct is reported, action must be swift and strengthen an ethical work culture among department staff,' he said, adding that collaboration with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission can be conducted to boost integrity. – Bernama artificial intelligence Immigration Department Saifuddin Nasution Ismail

Home Ministry mulls AI training for Immigration personnel at local universities
PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is considering sending Immigration Department personnel for training in artificial intelligence (AI) at local universities as part of efforts to embrace technological change. In his speech at Immigration Department Day 2025, he called on the department's human resources division to coordinate sessions with institutions such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for such training. "Send personnel to local university faculties in batches, such as UKM and UiTM. "Give them the opportunity to attend one- to two-week sessions to gain knowledge of AI and develop the skills needed to use AI tools, which are evolving rapidly every day. "These skills are necessary to leverage technologies that are advancing quickly. If we embrace AI today, we can keep pace. If we ignore it, we risk falling 30 years behind," he said. Citing an example of technological advancement, Saifuddin said Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba manages a database of 800 million users and is capable of processing up to 230,000 transactions per second during special online sales. "They don't have oil or gas resources, but they have mastered human capital. Through online sales, they can record 230,000 transactions in just one second," he said. The minister also urged the Immigration Department to strengthen its commitment to integrity, describing it as the backbone of public service delivery under the Madani reform agenda. "With reforms anchored on efficient governance, strengthened integrity, and impactful service delivery, I hope Immigration will uphold a zero-tolerance policy against corruption," he said. He called for immediate and transparent action against any reported misconduct, supported by robust ethical practices within the department. "If continuous training is needed (on AI), implement it. If collaboration with enforcement agencies like the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is necessary, pursue it. If an internal monitoring system is required, establish it," he said. He also assured full support for efforts to strengthen integrity within the Immigration Department, aligning with the national leadership's call for a people-centric administration. "If processes need improvement, simplify them. If systems need change, implement it. We remain the frontliners in delivering services to the people, and these efforts must move in tandem with ongoing developments," he said.
