St. Paul man sentenced to 13 years in prison for deadly shooting outside tobacco shop

CBS News24-04-2025
A judge sentenced a 24-year-old man to 13 years in prison on Thursday for his role in a deadly shooting outside a St. Paul tobacco store.
E'shaun Maurice Funches pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm last month for the Dec. 13, 2023, shooting.
Court documents say Funches' prison sentence will be followed by 6.5 years of probation.
The shooting happened at a store on the 400 block of University Avenue. Police said multiple callers reported hearing two or three gunshots.
The complaint says that when officers arrived, they found the victim, later identified as 30-year-old Alfonzo Armstead, with gunshot wounds in his back, abdomen and leg. He was semi-conscious when they arrived, and said he couldn't breathe before losing consciousness altogether. He was taken to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A police sergeant witnessed a possible suspect running immediately after the shooting, where he stopped the man and took him into custody. According to the complaint, he was carrying clothing and appeared to be trying to discard them into a dumpster. Those pieces of clothing matched those of the shooter, as caught on surveillance video.
He allegedly told officers he found the clothes, and when further asked why he would have been trying to throw them away, he is alleged to have told investigators that he was trying to throw away candy wrappers, not the clothes.
Survelliance footage allegedly captured Funches exiting a Nissan Rogue right before the shooting. Investigators eventually found the vehicle's owner, who said she and her boyfriend had picked Funches up at a White Castle on Rice Street. She explained that Funches and her boyfriend had been friends for years.
Near University Avenue and Arundel Street, she says Funches got out of the car and shot a man. She went to check on the man who had been shot, but she "didn't know what to do," according to charging documents. Her boyfriend told investigators they were "distraught" over the incident and called the police.
Funches has a prior conviction of felony second-degree aggravated robbery, which bans him from owning a firearm.

NY man arrested for allowing 15-year-old to drive car involved in deadly NJ crash

A New York man has been arrested for allegedly allowing a 15-year-old to get behind the wheel of a car that was later involved in a crash in New Jersey, which left another teenager dead. The fatal collision occurred early in the morning of Feb. 28 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, near the New York state line in Alpine, according to a statement from Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. Authorities were called to the scene just before 6 a.m. to investigate reports of a crash between a 2025 Nissan Rogue carrying five occupants and a 2019 Honda CR-V, carrying only the driver, who was unharmed. One of the passengers in the Rogue, a 16-year-old from New York who was not identified, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene, the prosecutor's office said. Two of the other passengers were also seriously hurt while the teen driver sustained minor injuries. He was arrested back in March on a slew of charges, including vehicular homicide and operating a motor vehicle without a license during a fatal accident. Authorities said the teen was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly in the lead up to the crash. Ryan Chambers, 21 of Elmira, N.Y., was the lone adult in the packed Rogue at the time. He was arrested in Elmira Heights earlier this month and has since been charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Chambers was transported back to Bergen County, where he remains in custody at the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Drunk Driver Causes Chaos at Outdoor Art Show

A drunk driver allegedly caused over $100,000 worth of damage after they drove into a Long Island art show last weekend, Newsday reported. At around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday morning, 23-year-old Nicoly Ribeiro De Souza allegedly drove her 2020 Nissan Rogue into an outdoor art exhibit in Montauk. Pictures taken later on Sunday morning show the stark devastation, with artists' tents collapsed on top of paintings large and small. Jim Levinson, a local Sag Harbor photographer, noted that it 'looked like a tornado came through.' One of the damaged tents reportedly contained the work of around 30 different artists, with one of them losing paintings on which she'd worked for most of last year. Volunteers helped to clean up the site so that the exhibit could still take place as scheduled on Sunday morning. Luckily, none of the vendors were hurt in the episode. However, for some, the loss of their work is just as dire.'The people that come to these shows, this is how they make their living,' said John Papaleo, a board member of the Montauk Artists Association, which sponsors the event. 'This is their livelihood.' De Souza is currently awaiting arraignment. Following the accident, she was taken to Southampton Hospital with minor injuries. A passenger in De Souza's vehicle declined medical treatment at the scene. Neither the Montauk Artists Association nor the East Hampton Town Police immediately responded to a request for comment from Men's Driver Causes Chaos at Outdoor Art Show first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 30, 2025

2 hurt when dozens of shots are fired at party in St. Paul, police say

More than 30 shots were fired at a party in St. Paul, Minnesota, overnight, leaving two men hospitalized with injuries, police said. The St. Paul Police Department said its officers responded to Regions Hospital just after midnight on Saturday after two men showed up there with gunshot wounds. Both were conscious and breathing and should survive. Police learned the shooting occurred at a party at Central Avenue and Avon Street. Officers interviewed witnesses and are working to learn who fired shots and why. No arrests have been made. Regions Hospital was briefly locked down due to "the amount of people arriving related to this incident," police said, but the lockdown has since been lifted.
