Timor-Leste set to join Asean nuclear weapon-free zone under new addendum
KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) has considered and adopted the draft addendum to the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ).
The addendum provides the legal basis to enable Asean Member States and Timor-Leste to undertake the necessary domestic procedures for accession.
Its adoption marks a significant step forward in Timor-Leste's integration into Asean's political and security frameworks.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who chaired the meeting, has also handed over the addendum draft in a ceremony to the depository state, Thailand.
"We believe that Timor-Leste's inclusion in the SEANWFZ security framework is a crucial step towards its integration into Asean and the broader regional security architecture.
"It is my sincere hope that member states can begin undertaking the necessary domestic processes with a view to concluding Timor-Leste's accession process with the SEANWFZ Treaty by the 47th Asean Summit and related summits," he said briefly after handing over the draft.
The draft was finalised by the SEANWFZ executive committee during its meeting on April 29.
The meeting has also adopted the Guidelines to Facilitate Timor-Leste's Accession to Asean Legal Instruments and Agreements, marking continued progress towards Timor-Leste's full membership in Asean.
During the AMM meeting, Asean foreign ministers and Timor-Leste also reaffirmed their collective commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity in the face of intensifying geopolitical and economic challenges.
The discussions centred on strengthening Asean's strategic autonomy, advancing the Asean Community Vision 2045, and enhancing the region's capacity to play a proactive and constructive role in regional and global affairs.
On the situation in Myanmar, Mohamad also proposed the extension and expansion of ceasefires beyond the currently affected zones as a constructive step towards a broader cessation of violence and the effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
He highlighted the importance of ensuring a safe and enabling environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the rebuilding of affected communities.

PBS was a former BN component party before leaving the coalition after the 14th General Election, following BN's defeat. The Sabah State Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year. Earlier this week, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin denied inviting PBS to rejoin the coalition or work together in the coming election. Previously, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Bung Moktar Radin denied inviting PBS to rejoin the coalition or proposing cooperation with the party. This followed PBS' statement that the party would not work with BN in the polls.

Malaysia–Cambodia mission paves way for stronger trade and investment ties
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia–Cambodia Business Council (MCBC) has wrapped up its Malaysia–Cambodia Trade & Investment Mission 2025, paving the way for stronger bilateral ties and new cross-border business opportunities. MCBC founding president Datuk Sri Dr Ricky Yaw expressed optimism about the mission's long-term benefits, noting that it has already laid the foundation for collaboration among 20 business associations. "This mission has laid the groundwork for collaboration among 20 business associations and is already making an impact. We believe in growing together, not just economically, but as partners with a shared future," said Yaw in a statement. A key highlight of the evening was the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs), marking a significant milestone in advancing regional cooperation. The Federation of Associations for SMEs of Cambodia formalised MoUs with 18 Malaysian business associations, including the Malaysia–Cambodia Business Association, SME Association of Malaysia, Malaysia Chinese Assembly Hall, and several others spanning diverse sectors from branding and electronics to furniture and sustainable supply chains. A parallel MoU was inked between the Cambodia Chinese Commerce Association and the same group of Malaysian associations to strengthen cross-border commercial linkages further. Additionally, a third MoU was signed between Sarana Law Firm, a leading Cambodian legal practice, and Manjit Singh Sachdev, Mohammad Radzi & Partners of Malaysia, aiming to boost legal cooperation and facilitate smoother business transactions. Ahead of the networking dinner, Yaw paid a courtesy call on Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, at the Peace Palace. Their discussion focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as education, healthcare, SMEs, construction, real estate and agricultural processing. Manet welcomed the Malaysian delegation's growing interest in Cambodia, reaffirmed the country's investor-friendly climate and highlighted the government's commitment to empowering SMEs and enhancing regional competitiveness. He also pointed to the recent launch of direct Phnom Penh–Penang flights by Cambodia Airways as an important catalyst for boosting business connectivity and tourism between the two countries. The mission featured a high-level business matching and networking dinner at the Sky Garden, Olympia City Hotel by Dara, officiated by Samheng Bora, Secretary of State at Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce. Farmers' incentives to be paid out by July 31
PUTRAJAYA: The government will ensure that all payments for the ploughing and harvesting incentives to farmers are completed by July 31, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic). He said the total amount of the incentive was RM210, comprising RM160 for ploughing and RM50 for harvesting. He added that the matter had been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy (FSCC) Meeting 1/2025, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 16. 'The meeting focused on strategic initiatives to strengthen the country's food security and boost the growth of the agriculture and agro-food sectors. 'Various other initiatives were also discussed, including strategies to increase the country's self-sufficiency rate (SSR) for beef and buffalo meat to ensure sustainability of the nation's food supply,' he said in a statement, Bernama reported. On June 11, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) announced an increase in the ploughing incentive rate and introduced a harvesting incentive, providing total cash assistance of RM210 per hectare to padi farmers each season, benefiting around 130,000 farmers across the peninsula. Mohamad also said the government welcomed the development of the Malaysian Food Composition Database as a strategic component of the National Food Security Policy. He said the meeting had also agreed in principle to explore effective strategies to reduce dependence on grain corn imports to ensure the industry's sustainability and growth. 'In addition, the proposed amendment to the Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004 (Act 634) will be implemented to provide more comprehensive protection for new plant varieties.' Mohamad said policy planning would continue to be strengthened based on the findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report for the agricultural sector's growth. He said that as part of efforts to modernise the agricultural sector, the strategic cooperation between KPKM and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia will be enhanced with the introduction of the Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency – Agriculture Light syllabus for private unmanned aircraft systems.
