Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune Messiah' aims to become second Hollywood film to be shot entirely in IMAX

Express Tribune2 days ago
Denis Villeneuve's Dune Messiah is confirmed to be shot entirely in IMAX, making it the second feature-length Hollywood film to use full-screen IMAX 70mm-capable cameras, following Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond revealed the news in a CNBC segment, with an IMAX spokesperson later confirming Villeneuve's involvement but stopping short of verifying if every scene would be captured in that format.
Villeneuve previously used IMAX cameras to striking effect in Dune: Part Two, notably in scenes like Paul's first ride on a sandworm. Expanding the visual canvas to a 1.43:1 aspect ratio gave the film a scale that resonated with audiences worldwide, and Dune Messiah appears set to amplify that experience.
While no official word has come from Warner Bros. about the third Dune film, speculation has intensified in recent weeks.
Several key cast members, including Anya Taylor-Joy and Rebecca Ferguson, were seen together at a UK F1 race, fuelling theories that filming is about to begin. Reports suggest Villeneuve may have to wait until Nolan wraps The Odyssey, as the IMAX cameras needed are limited in number and currently in use.
Despite the lack of a formal release date or studio announcement, the news of Villeneuve's plan to shoot in IMAX reinforces industry expectations that Dune Messiah is imminent and ambitious. With high demand for IMAX screenings and the growing appetite for epic science fiction, the format choice positions Dune Messiah as a landmark visual event.

Johnny Depp breaks silence on being dropped from Fantastic Beasts

Johnny Depp has addressed his departure from the Fantastic Beasts film series, offering his perspective on how the exit unfolded. The actor said the studio requested that he resign during the filming of the third installment, shortly after a UK court ruled against him in a high-profile libel case. 'They said, 'We'd like you to resign,'' Depp said in a recent interview. 'I knew it was coming. And I said, 'F*** you. No. You're not going to get me to resign.'' Depp portrayed the character Gellert Grindelwald in the first two Fantastic Beasts films. Following his exit, Warner Bros. recast the role with actor Mads Mikkelsen for the third entry, The Secrets of Dumbledore, released in 2022. While discussing the period following his removal, Depp said the experience felt isolating and that he believed the studio no longer wanted him involved. 'They wanted me to just be gone. They wanted me to disappear,' he said. Depp, now 61, is continuing to work on new projects. He is currently directing Modi, a biopic about artist Amedeo Modigliani, and is expected to star in the upcoming film Day Drinker alongside Jason Momoa. Despite the challenges, Depp said he remains committed to creative work and has no plans to step back from acting or directing.

Live action Hot Wheels racing to screens

After the pink-heavy Barbie extravaganza of three years ago, some of you may be wistful for a film dedicated specifically to the little Hot Wheels cars of your youth. If this oddly specific desire applies to you, you are in luck: as per Variety, Wicked director Jon M Chu will direct a live-action film for Warner Bros dedicated to the beloved toy cars. "Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed - it's about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play," Chu said in a statement. "Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I'm excited to [ ] create an adventure that honours Hot Wheels' legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new." According to a press release, the high-octane action film based on the Mattel toy will showcase "some of the world's hottest and sleekest vehicles." Plot details have not yet been revealed. However, Mattel Studios president Robbie Brenner expressed high hopes for Chu's ability to translate a tale of toy cars to the big screen. "Jon's ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life," Brenner said. "His films are visual spectacles - true eye candy - but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames." In addition to Wicked, Chu also has Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights to his name. Meanwhile, as well as the Hot Wheels film, the director is also slated to work on a Britney Spears biopic, as well as a film project pertaining to yet another children's toy: Play-Doh. The success of Barbie appears to have struck a chord (or opened a Pandora's box, depending on your point of view), because Hot Wheels is not the only toy film on the brink of production; also in the works are films dedicated specifically to Barney (of purple dinosaur fame) and – of all things – childhood favourite card game Uno.
