Easing the people's burden for a stronger economy
PETALING JAYA: Motorists will be spared from paying higher toll rates for 10 highways this year, following a government's decision to postpone the move. Among the highways are Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB) and KL-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, according to an agreement with highway operators, the toll rates are supposed to increase this year. 'These are old agreements between the companies and the previous governments. To facilitate this, the government will bear the cost of more than RM500mil,' said Anwar in a special announcement aired live on his social media platforms yesterday. On the recent restructuring of electricity tariffs effective July 1, Anwar said despite the move, over 85% of domestic users would see a reduction in their bills from this month. 'Although the restructured electricity tariff began in July, the people's electricity bill has not increased,' he said. Some users, he said, saw up to a 14% reduction. 'This is unlike the slander that was spread. When the tariff increases, the cost would reduce; hence, the bill would be lower. Check your electricity bills,' he explained. Anwar also said everyone could enjoy a long weekend to celebrate Malaysia Day this year while declaring Sept 15 an additional public holiday. The long weekend would be from Saturday (Sept 13) up to Malaysia Day on Tuesday (Sept 16). The public holiday, he said, would enable Malaysians to enjoy the long break with their family or take a much-needed vacation. 'This public holiday is intended to recognise the unity and significance of Malaysia's formation. 'This will also encourage people to strengthen family bonds by visiting their hometowns or vacationing locally,' he said. Explaining the current economic situation of the country, Anwar, who is Finance Minister, said the nation's economy remained on a strong footing, supported by consistent growth, record investments and a strengthening ringgit. He said the country posted a 4.4% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first quarter of this year, with the second quarter expected to reach 4.5%. Malaysia also jumped 11 places to 23rd in the 2025 World Competitiveness Index, while approved investments hit an all-time high of RM384bil last year, up 17% from 2023. He added the ringgit's more than 5% gain against the US dollar this year, reaching RM4.23 and becoming one of Asia's top-performing currencies, has allowed the government to enhance living standards. He also said the unemployment rate dropped to 3% in May, the lowest in over a decade, while over 250,000 jobs were created between 2023 and 2024. Minimum wage was also raised to RM1,700 effective Feb 1 and fully implemented on Aug 1, he said, adding that 153,000 workers under government-linked companies now earned a living wage of RM3,100 monthly.

Let people decide if they want the RM100 aid, says Dr Wee
PETALING JAYA: Those who do not need the RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) cash aid should have the option to opt out and let the money be channelled to more critical areas such as education and health, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong ( pic ). Dr Wee proposed redirecting the money to support public hospitals and award scholarships to deserving students, instead of using it for what he described as blanket populist measures. 'Rather than spending public money on populist measures that may benefit those who don't need it, wouldn't it be better to support those who genuinely do, while also upgrading our healthcare and education systems?' he said in a Facebook post yesterday. Dr Wee suggested a mechanism allowing Malaysians who do not want or need the Sara assistance to voluntarily return it. He said the funds could help reduce the elective surgery backlog for 15,000 patients facing wait times of up to 21 months in government hospitals and provide scholarships for SPM straight-A students, STPM, and matriculation graduates with excellent CGPA results who are still denied places in their preferred university programmes. He also called for the abolition of the Rakan KKM scheme, saying 'it is biased and only benefits patients who can afford to pay more to jump the queue'. Dr Wee added that he believes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Cabinet ministers, MPs and assemblymen would also be willing to forgo the RM100 aid. 'I will be the first to contribute mine. A win-win solution – the people get to choose, and the government wins too!' he said. Yesterday, Anwar announced that every Malaysian aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 credit via MyKad starting Aug 31 under the Sara initiative.

Sim: Comply with ruling
Goodwill: Sim (left) and Fahmi believe the additional holiday reflects the spirit of Malaysia Day. Procedures must be followed as Sept 15 is declared public holiday PETALING JAYA: Employers must comply with the public holiday declared for Sept 15 by either giving employees the day off with regular pay or pay public holiday rates if they are required to work, says the Human Resources Ministry. Minister Steven Sim said employers can also offer a replacement day off for those who are required to work on that day. He explained the implementation of the holiday is subject to provisions under Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955, the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Chapter 67), the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76) and the Holidays Act 1951, and it must be done fairly. 'This long weekend can be used to promote wellness among workers and stimulate local economic activities. 'This, in turn, contribute positively to the community,' he said in response to the Prime Minister's announcement that Sept 15 is an additional public holiday. Sept 15 falls on a Monday, creating a long weekend as it is followed by the Malaysia Day public holiday on Sept 16. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the gesture is to honour the unity and uniqueness that underpin the formation of Malaysia. Sim said the holiday reflects the spirit of Malaysia Day, providing an opportunity for citizens to come together and strengthen national pride. 'This will also allow the public to appreciate the country's multiracial and multicultural identity,' he added. He also called on Malaysians to embrace the occasion by fostering harmony and solidarity in conjunction with the national celebration. To support a smooth rollout, the Labour Department is ready to assist employers and workers. 'To ensure the implementation of the additional public holiday is fair and organised, the Labour Department is prepared to provide advisory services and answer queries from employers and workers regarding the implementation of this additional public holiday,' he said. Meanwhile, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Prime Minister's announcement reflects the government's commitment to ease the people's burden with various forms of assistance. He said the government's initiative would also further boost economic growth, provide relief to the people and strengthen the country's fiscal resilience in the face of global uncertainties. 'The government will continue to balance the need to improve the country's financial position with the responsibility to safeguard the well-being of the people,' he said, Bernama reported. Fahmi, who is also National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations main committee chairman, called on Malaysians to raise the spirit of love for the country. 'This is the time for us to unite our hearts, appreciate the blessings of independence and together contribute to the prosperity of the country,' he said. He said the government would continue to strengthen the development agenda through the 13th Malaysia Plan and the 2026 Budget which is currently being worked on for the benefit of the people.
