Permanent housing still a distant dream for Haveri's 900+ flood-hit families
The previous BJP administration had pledged Rs 5 lakh per household for completely destroyed dwellings through the flood relief initiative.
Under BS Yediyurappa's leadership, a commitment of Rs 5 lakh per family was made via the flood victims' relief programme for reconstructing fully damaged houses. The Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation was tasked with disbursing funds in stages.
The majority of beneficiaries await full compensation, leaving their reconstruction efforts incomplete for four years.
Of the 992 documented damaged houses with properly submitted relief applications, the system inexplicably ceased functioning after distributing initial payments of Rs 1.2 lakh to most recipients.
More than 800 houses suffered damage in 2022-23, while earlier cases remain unresolved. Neither the affected residents nor local authorities have received clear explanations for the delayed compensation.
Despite numerous communications from Haveri deputy commissioner to the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation's managing director requesting relief restoration, including a detailed inspection report of 157 houses in Haveri constituency, officials remain unresponsive.
The suspended rehabilitation funds have created considerable hardships. Many affected individuals have sought help from district authorities. Acknowledging the urgency, the DC contacted corporation officials on Sept 30, 2024, requesting relief reinstatement.
Unable to provide flood rehabilitation scheme assistance, authorities suggested pursuing the Devaraj Arasu scheme on Oct 5, 2024. Victims continue waiting as neither scheme provides relief, with no clear guidance about housing provision under the Devaraj Arasu Housing scheme.
On July 8, the housing department secretary issued seemingly contradictory instructions to the corporation's managing director regarding surveying unblocked houses. While official correspondence continues for three years, affected families endure heavy rainfall in temporary shelters, having lost their permanent houses.
"Our home was damaged in the heavy rains. To receive relief, we were told by the gram panchayat officials to build a new house up to the plinth level for a survey.
Accordingly, we partially constructed a house. However, they say the relief funds we were supposed to receive are blocked. We are facing hardships living in a shed," said one of the affected residents in Handiganur village, Kallaveeragouda Patil.
Ravi Patil, gram panchayat member, said restricting damaged house reconstruction to four months instead of ten is unjust. "The flood victims remain displaced without proper housing. The authorities must promptly disburse the pending financial aid to support those affected," he clarified.

"Need To Relook At Our History": Economist As PM Offers Prayers At Iconic Cholapuram Temple
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Shiva temple, has put the spotlight on the Chola empire, especially on the time of Rajendra Chola, who stood tall when northern India was under Muslim rule. This, however, was not an area or a period that gets much attention -- the study of history being "Delhi-centric", said economist and historian Sanjeev Sanyal, pointing to the big takeaway from the Prime Minister's visit. "We need to begin to relook at our history and think about our great ancestors as a vigorous people," said Mr Sanyal, explaining that the popular conception of Indians as a passive people who are thankful to invaders -- from Muslim to British -- for bringing in technology, culture and cuisine. Our ancestors, he said, "built great temples, they built entire new cities when necessary". "This is a much more vigorous view of ourselves than, you know, we are waiting for somebody to conquer us and give us the railways," said Mr Sanyal, who is also the Principal Economic Advisor to the government. "These were vigorous, risk-taking people, happy to go to war with each other sometimes or with foreign invaders. But the point is, this were not a passive people. And instead, the only person in our history of our, you know, pre-Islamic history that we celebrate is Ashoka. And the only reason we celebrate him is because he was passive, because the empire collapsed under him," he added. He said he was "glad the Cholas are being celebrated," but they were not the only people who had left their mark on the history of southeast Asia. "Even Tamil Nadu itself has many others. The Pandyas, the Cheras, which are from next door in Kerala, the Pallavas, and then the Gajapatis and all the kings of Kalinga, who also had these great maritime linkages to Southeast Asia. It was built around two decades after the Tanjore temple and in the same style. The Prime Minister's visit comes ahead of next year's assembly election in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP is trying hard to carve out a niche.

The accused, Harsh Vardhan Jain , was taken into custody on Tuesday following a raid by the Noida unit of the to officials, preliminary investigation revealed that Jain falsely claimed to be a consul or ambassador representing fictional micronations like West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia. He allegedly used his fake identity to broker job placements abroad for companies and STF said Jain had created fake documents and morphed photographs showing him with top Indian dignitaries such as the prime minister and the president to make his claims appear Jain's arrest, the STF seized four vehicles with fake diplomatic number plates, 12 forged diplomatic passports, two fake PAN cards, 34 rubber stamps of different countries and companies, and two fake press agency also recovered Rs 44.7 lakh in cash, foreign currency, documents linked to several companies, and 18 more fake diplomatic number plates. Fake seals purportedly from the Ministry of External Affairs were also Director General of Police Amitabh Yash said, 'The accused was running the bogus embassy from a rented house and projected himself as a consul or ambassador of non-existent countries such as West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia, and moved around in vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates.'During interrogation, Jain claimed he had links in the past with controversial godman Chandraswami and international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. Officials added that in 2011, he had been booked in a case involving possession of an illegal satellite phone.A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Kavi Nagar police station. The STF said further proceedings are underway to investigate the full extent of the racket and any additional people or companies involved.
