IPOH: Police are still awaiting a full medical report from Seri Manjung Hospital on the health condition of a teacher who allegedly posted offensive remarks regarding the recent crash in Gerik that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said that, so far, they have been informed the teacher is still receiving treatment at the hospital. "The police recorded the teacher's statement on June 16, and we have also seized his personal mobile phone to assist in the investigation. "The investigation papers are nearly ready to be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor. "We are only waiting for the medical report of the teacher, who is believed to be suffering from a psychiatric condition," he said at a press conference after attending the handover-of-duties ceremony for the state deputy police chief at the state Senior Police Officers' Mess here today. On June 11, Manjung police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman was reported as saying that police received a report regarding a social media post made from a Facebook account bearing the name ' Khalid Yunus '. On June 16, he said that the case was being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – Bernama

KLANG: An archery coach claimed trial to charges of sexually assaulting and engaging in carnal intercourse without consent with a 15-year-old girl last week. Mohd Faizul Md Taib, 39, entered his non-guilty plea after the charge was read out to him before Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali. The father of one was charged with sexually assaulting the girl, an offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act which provides a 20-year jail term and whipping upon conviction. He also faces a separate charge of committing carnal intercourse without consent against the victim under Section 377C of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term not less than five years and up to 20 years, and whipping upon conviction. The alleged offences took place at 4.20pm at a premises in Kampung Sementa here on June 10. Deputy public prosecutor Nuruljannah Aimi offered bail at RM15,000 with one surety, along with additional conditions prohibiting the accused or his representatives from harassing the victim. In mitigation, lawyer Daneish Thayalan said his client earns RM4,000 a month as an archery coach and is supporting his wife and child. "He is also covering the medical expenses of his father, who is a diabetic and has hypertension. "Therefore, I ask for a lower bail sum. He has no issues with reporting to the police station monthly," he said. Siti Aminah set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and allowed the prosecution's additional conditions. The court set Aug 19 for mention.

Temerloh fatal crash: Car driver involved charged with drug possession, trafficking

TEMERLOH: The car driver involved in a road crash that resulted in the death of two teenage girls was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with trafficking more than 50 grammes of Methamphetamine last week. Chun Kok Keong (pix), 38, of Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, is charged with committing the offence in front of the lobby of the Temerloh District Police Headquarters at about 12.30 am on June 12 this year. The charge, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 15 strokes of the cane in the absence of the death penalty, upon conviction. No plea was recorded from Chun, who works as a customer service officer, after the charge was read out before Magistrate Tan Chiew King, as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Chun was also charged with possessing heroin weighing about 0.85 grammes at the same location and time under Section 12(2) of the same act. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which provides a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, upon conviction. The court allowed him bail of RM4,500 with one surety for the charge and set Sept 18 for mention. Deputy public prosecutors Adriana Azrin and Siti Sarah Aqilah Lokman appeared for the prosecution, while Chun was represented by lawyer Siti Fatimah Mohd Shahril, from the National Legal Aid Foundation. In the same court, Chun also pleaded not guilty to two charges of dangerous driving, which resulted in the death of Nur Erdina Shaffiya Muhammad Nazri and Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both aged 18, at the traffic lights on Jalan Tengku Ismail, here at 10.50 pm, on June 11 this year. The charge, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), provides imprisonment for up to 10 years and a maximum fine of RM50,000 if convicted. Chun was not allowed bail as he is also facing charges for drug trafficking, which is a non-bailable offence. The court set July 17 for mention.
