Raigad police bust huge cyber fraud racket, arrest 11, seize 6,175 SIM cards
The gang operated using telecom-grade SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) infrastructure to impersonate officials from agencies such as the CBI, Supreme Court and cyber police.
The case came to light after a Raigad resident filed a complaint on May 23, stating that he had been defrauded of ₹66 lakh. 'He received multiple WhatsApp and voice calls from fraudsters posing as central government officials, who accused him of money laundering and threatened to arrest him unless he paid a hefty fine,' said the investigating officer. 'Under psychological pressure, the victim transferred the money to several accounts over a span of several days.'
The investigation led the police to a Central Bank account held by Abdus Salam Barbhuyan, through which the stolen funds had been routed. 'Further digital tracking pointed to a company named Nivi Cloud Pvt Ltd, hosted at the Yotta Data Centre in Panvel,' said superintendent of police Anchal Dalal. 'The listed director, Vineet Duva, was discovered to be a fake identity.'
The police arrested Nadeem Ahmed, Laraib Khan, Shadan Khan and Mohd Faisal Khan, four men from Shahganj, Jaunpur (UP), who were allegedly manufacturing fake KYC documents. The documents were reportedly made with the help of two Jio sales managers, Vinay Kumar Rao and Gangadhar Muttan. 'The duo procured SIP lines in the names of shell companies. These lines were then used to make fraudulent calls across India,' said the officer.
At the centre of the racket was Abhay Santprakash Mishra, a BTech graduate from Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. He worked as an aggregator, setting up multiple servers to operate both domestic and international SIP lines. 'Mishra's network was found to have ties to Pakistan, Canada, Nepal, China, and Bangladesh. He was also found attempting to secure fake documents for Nepalese citizenship,' said Dalal.
The investigation revealed that one of the servers operated by Mishra had made over 6.2 million calls in just 28 days, including 87,000 to target victims in Maharashtra. Upon his arrest, the authorities recovered 35 mobile phones, laptops, tablets, VPN equipment and documents related to 112 bank accounts. The police have also seized cryptocurrency worth ₹85 lakh as well as real estate assets, including a flat in Noida, two shops in Hardoi and a bungalow in Nepal.
In a related arrest, Mohsin Mia Khan was apprehended in Delhi with 6,175 SIM cards from providers such as Jio, Airtel, VI and several foreign telecom companies. He had 26 mobile phones and admitted to supplying SIM cards for use in cyber fraud activities. The police have also arrested Shams Tahir Khan, an MBA from Rajasthan, who helped market and sell illegal SIP connections.

A 22-year-old Nepalese woman was allegedly tied to a pole and assaulted by a mob in Bareilly upon allegedly seeing her moving 'suspiciously', police said on Saturday. According to the police, the victim is a native of Nepal and works at a call center in Noida. The police said she had gone to visit a male acquaintance at his residence in the Baradari locality of Bareilly upon his invitation. On Saturday evening, she reportedly went up to the terrace while talking on the phone around 2:30 am. Locals on night patrol noticed her and, growing suspicious, mistook her for a thief. Some youths even attempted to climb up to the terrace as they shone flashlights at her. She was caught by the crowd below, who then began to assault her. The mob allegedly tied her to a pole and continued to beat her until the police arrived and took her into custody. The police said that the residents of the Baradari area had been keeping nighttime watch due to a recent increase in thefts. According to the police the woman sustained a leg fracture after jumping from the first floor and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bareilly, where doctors have described her condition as stable. ‘Uninteded errors': TMC MP withdraws letter demanding ED, CBI probes in ECL ‘corruption'
1 2 3 Kolkata: Bengal BJP on Sunday criticised Trinamool MP Kirti Azad's decision to withdraw the letter written to the Union coal and mines minister Kishan Reddy. The letter by Azad had demanded probes by the ED and CBI into the alleged corruption at Eastern Coalfields Ltd. Azad, also the chairperson of the standing committee on chemicals and fertilisers, withdrew the letter citing errors. In the letter dated July 23, Azad had alleged "rampant corruption at the ECL" and claimed that cases of corruption involving tender irregularities, coal pilferage, manipulation of coal grade, unlawful transportation and breakdown of operational oversight and financial accountability gripped the ECL. Despite investigations by ED and CBI, several collieries have continued to incur losses. Azad also provided a list of 14 associate companies registered from the same address, "rigging bids for years in connivance with ECL officials". Additionally, he enclosed a list of collieries where employees were involved in loss-causing activities. However, in a letter on Saturday, he wished to withdraw the earlier letter due to "discrepancies in the statements" and "unintended errors" as he was "misinformed". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Union minister Sukanta Majumdar claimed that Azad had received a "dressing down" in his party. Accreditation case: HC asks CBI for ‘suitable' nursing college list
Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has directed the CBI to furnish its reports on nursing colleges found fit to operate in the state, while hearing a PIL alleging irregularities in granting recognition. The central probe agency was also directed to share the reports with Vishal Baghel, who had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the HC pointing to gross irregularities in accreditation across the state. The court had ordered a CBI probe into credentials of all the nursing colleges of the state. The CBI had carried out the probe, and divided the colleges in three categories -- "suitable", "unsuitable"and those who can be allowed to operate if they make certain improvements in the college infrastructure. A bench of justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla asked the CBI to scan the reports of colleges found "suitable", and file reports. The CBI had told the HC that the reports run into lakhs of pages and it doesn't have manpower and resources to scan papers in such large numbers. The high court now asked the govt to help the CBI with resources and manpower to carry out the scanning work, and said the scanning work should be carried out under the CBI supervision.
