USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, July 21: Two top five moves follow UFC, PFL events
First, the PFL Champions Series Africa in Cape Town, South Africa, saw a shocking conclusion to its main event middleweight title fight. Johnny Eblen, the incoming champion, was up on the scorecards heading into the fifth round. However, Costello Van Steenis pulled off a last-second rear-naked choke to snatch the title away.
Also on the card, Dakota Ditcheva turned in a dominant performance against Sumiko Inaba, bringing her into the top 5 in the women's flyweight division and No. 13 in the women's pound-for-pound rankings.
Then, in New Orleans at UFC 318, Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway turned in a captivating trilogy bout for the BMF title. In what was Poirier's retirement fight, Holloway managed to earn the judges' decision after going the full 25 minutes. Holloway successfully defended the BMF title, and now that he's a full-time lightweight, settles in the No. 5 spot. Poirier, who hangs up the gloves, also gives up his spot in the rankings.

July NASCAR Cup Power Rankings: Top spot goes to Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin followed his No. 1 ranking in the June Power Rankings by again taking the top spot in the July Power Rankings. He repeated at No. 1 after a month that saw him win once and finish in the top five in three of the four races in July. July Power Rankings 1. Denny Hamlin (Last month: No. 1) Hamlin earns the top spot after winning a race (Dover), finishing third (Indianapolis) and placing fourth (Chicago Street Race) in July. He scored the most points in the series in July with 155. Hamlin scored a series-high 45 stage points in the month. He also posted the fastest lap of the race at Dover — which came on the last lap as he led while on older tires — and Indianapolis. 2. Chase Briscoe (NR) Briscoe had a pair of runner-up finishes (Sonoma and Dover), won the pole at Indianapolis and started second at Dover and Sonoma. He scored 147 points in the month, second only to Hamlin. Briscoe also had a stage win and scored 44 stage points, second only to Hamlin. Briscoe scored points in seven of the month's eight stages. 3. Shane van Gisbergen (NR) He won the Chicago Street Race and at Sonoma, collecting 99 of the 124 points he scored in the month in those two races. He placed 30th at Dover and was 19th at Indianapolis after qualifying 11th — his best qualifying performance on an oval. His oval performances kept him from ranking higher. 4. Chase Elliott (No. 2) Elliott took the points lead this month from Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron. Elliott has been consistent all season and that showed in July. His 132 points ranked fourth in the series. He placed third at Sonoma and sixth at Dover. Elliott had a stage win in July (Dover) and led 238 laps (all at Dover). 5. Bubba Wallace (NR) The Brickyard 400 winner held off Kyle Larson on two overtime restarts to earn his first victory of the season and the first for 23XI Racing this year. Wallace was tied for sixth in points scored in July and ended the month with back-to-back top-10 results — seventh at Dover and first at Indy. Wallace scored points in six of eight stages in the month. His Indy win took him off the playoff cutline. Those outside the top five Alex Bowman — He scored 136 points, which ranked fourth among all drivers in July. Bowman had three top 10s in the four races, placing third at Dover, eighth in the Chicago Street Race and ninth at Indianapolis — his best finish there. Kyle Larson — He scored 122 points for the month. Larson ranked fifth for the month in stage points scored with 28. He had back-to-back top-five finishes to end the month, placing fourth at Dover and second at Indianapolis. UFC Vegas 108 Fight Card: Date, Time, Location, How To Watch Or Stream
The next event on the 2025 UFC schedule is nearly upon us. That fight card, UFC Vegas 108, takes place on Saturday, August 2, and is headlined by a short-notice flyweight matchup. In the UFC Fight Night main event, Hyun Sung Park steps in for the injured Amir Albazi against top-10-ranked UFC contender Tatsuro Taira. He joined the UFC in May 2022 with a record of 10-0, and after winning the Shooto flyweight title. Taira opened his UFC career with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario in May 2022. He followed that with back-to-back submission wins in contests where he earned 'Performance of the Night' bonuses, defeating C.J. Vergara and Jesús Santos Aguilar. Wins over Edgar Chairez and Carlos Hernandez in 2023 followed. In June, Taira got the first true test of his UFC career when he faced Alex Perez in a main event on a UFC Fight Night card at the Apex. At the time, Taira was the No. 13 ranked fighter in the UFC's flyweight division, and Perez, who had fought Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC 125-pound title in 2020, was ranked No. 5. The fight ended when Taira took the back of his opponent in the center of the Octagon and forced him to the mat, putting enormous pressure on Perez's knee and causing an injury that brought the fight to a halt in the second stanza. From all appearances, and judging from his comments after the victory, the move that finished the contest was a designed technique. That win put Taira at No. 5 in the UFC rankings, earning him a shot at former UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Royval, who entered the October 2024 contest as the No. 1 ranked in the UFC's 125-pound division. Royval and Taira put on a 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap, but the more experienced Royval took home the split-decision win, handing Taira the first loss of his professional career. The 25-year-old Taira is currently the No. 6 ranked UFC flyweight. Hyun Sung Park (10-0) won Road to UFC in early 2023 with a knockout of Seung Guk Choi. He followed that with a knockout of Shannon Ross in late 2023. Park did not compete in 2024 having had fights against Andre Lima and Nyamjargal Tumendemberel cancelled. He returned to the Octagon in March, scoring a first-round submission win over Carlos Hernandez at UFC Vegas 106. I wrote of the 29-year-old at the time, 'HyunSung Park looked excellent at UFC Vegas 106, moving to 3-0 in the UFC's flyweight division. Park used effective striking to hurt Carlos Hernandez against the fence. That striking made Hernandez move to the clinch, but Park showed his overall MMA ability in scoring a takedown, which led to a back take and a rear naked choke sub at 2:26 of Round 1. The 29-year-old Park looks ready for a test in his next outing as he has picked up three finishes in three UFC outings.' He gets that test in a big way and on short notice on Saturday night. Park has only gone the distance once in his MMA career. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos: Neil Magny fight at UFC on ESPN 71 'a long time coming'
LAS VEGAS – Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos says his date with Neil Magny has been long, long overdue, and at UFC on ESPN 71 on Saturday, they'll finally get to have it. Dos Santos (25-9-1 MMA, 11-5-1 UFC) made his promotional debut in May 2015, more than 26 months after Magny (29-13 MMA, 22-12 UFC) stepped into the octagon for the first time. Despite both spending more than a decade in the same division with more than 50 combined appearances, they've never fought or much less been booked. So when the Magny was finally offered, even with a less-than-desirable training camp runway ahead of fight night, dos Santos had to jump on it. "This has been a fight that's been a long time coming," dos Santos told MMA Junkie through an interpreter at Wednesday's UFC on ESPN 71 media day. "That's why I accepted it on short notice, because I know it's something that should've happened a while ago. It's a fight that's very interesting, and it should be a very good one. You talk about two veterans of the UFC and two people that know their way around the octagon. It should be a good one with a lot of experience." Dos Santos, 38, said experience will come into play in the fight with Magny, 37, and who can put their vast knowledge of the octagon to best use. It's a key contest for both aging athletes after being stopped in their most recent outings, and dos Santos said it will be important to not slip up. "He's a very experienced fighter," dos Santos said. "(He's) somebody that knows how to explore the space around the octagon, someone that you have to be very aware when fighting because he always tries to find opportunities to get an advantage. He's someone that is always going to try to take the rounds. You have to aware at all times."
