A 20-year-old was killed after a group of armed assailants attacked him and others while they were taking part in a religious procession in Bhopal on Sunday night.
According to police, Yuvraj Banskar, who lived with his family in Bhopal and was originally from Lalitpur district in Uttar Pradesh, was stabbed to death. Two others, Rohit Sen and Sanju Verma, were also attacked.
Police have arrested one accused, identified as Piyush Soni. A senior police officer said, 'The main accused, Piyush Soni, was arrested on the basis of the statement of eyewitnesses. Two other men have been arrested. We are on the lookout for other accused persons as well.'
According to police, the attack took place during a Shobha Yatra procession organised by the Yuva Hindu Utsav Samiti. The procession, which started from Sindhi Colony and was going towards Mata Mandir Square, was reportedly disrupted when armed men suddenly attacked people who were dancing to DJ music. The ensuing chaos left three young men severely injured. Yuvraj subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh of the Congress and the party's state president Jitu Patwari visited Hamidia Hospital on Monday, where they met Yuvraj's family and offered their condolences. The leaders also raised concerns about the law and order situation in the city. Addressing senior police officers at the spot, Singh said, 'It is forbidden to carry any kind of weapon during a rally. Will you take action if I show you photos and videos of people carrying weapons ?'
Sanju, who was a friend of Yuvraj's and was also injured in the attack, recounted the incident. 'We were dancing during the rally. Then someone else pushed Piyush, but he grabbed my collar. I slapped him. As we were leaving, he returned with his gang and attacked us. That's when Yuvraj died,' Sanju said.

Congress leader Heera Jotwa, son held in ₹7.3 crore MGNREGA rural jobs scheme case

Ahmedabad: Congress leader Heera Jotwa, his son Digvijay, and MGNREGA operator Rajesh Tailor were arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities amounting to ₹ 7.3 crore in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, which provides 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to rural households, police said. Started in 2005, MGNREGS was envisaged as a demand-based rural asset creation scheme to provide livelihood security through 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to every rural household. (Representative photo) A special investigation team (SIT) is probing the fraudulent diversion of funds meant for rural development projects in Hansot, in Gujarat's Bharuch district, an officer said. The financial irregularities, uncovered by the district rural development authority (DRDA), involved fake work completion certificates and forged documents, with funds transferred to accounts linked to the Jotwa family and others. 'Congress leader Heera Jotwa, his son Digvijay, and MGNREGA operator Rajesh Tailor were arrested on Friday,' Bharuch superintendent of police (SP) Mayur Chavda said. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi alleged political vendetta and demanded a judicial probe, while also calling for action against government officials who sanctioned the flawed works. Started in 2005, MGNREGS was envisaged as a demand-based rural asset creation scheme to provide livelihood security through 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to every rural household. It has been described as a poverty alleviation, social security, infrastructure building, and participatory development programme. However, various studies have also pointed out leakages and failings in the programme due to poor implementation. Jotwa was summoned from his home in the Gir Somnath district on Thursday and brought to Bharuch, where a special SIT team has been probing the misuse of funds allocated for road construction and development works in 56 villages across the Amod, Jambusar, and Hansot talukas, a police officer requesting anonymity said. Police said more arrests may follow in the coming days. Jotwa, a prominent leader from the Saurashtra region, had contested the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections from Keshod and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Junagadh. The Bharuch district administration lodged an FIR on May 30 after receiving the audit findings, and an SIT was formed to investigate the matter.

Oppn slams Odisha govt for grave lapses in chariot pulling

BHUBANESWAR : The delay in pulling of chariots during Rath Yatra in Puri which led to Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra being stuck midway and Lord Jagannath barely moving a few metres from the temple has sparked a massive political outcry with the Opposition Congress and BJD blaming the state government for the mismanagement. Stating that such occurrence is not a good sign for the state, president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) Bhakta Charan Das asked if pulling of the chariot of Lord Jagannath was delayed due to some genuine reason or was deliberate. Questioning the government over the conduct of Rath Yatra, Das said the festival was marred last year too as Lord Balabhadra had fallen down while being taken to Gundicha temple from the chariot. 'This time, the chariot of Lord Jagannath moved for less than a feet. The causes should be analysed properly. The reason for the delay is manmade. I had gone to the Rath Yatra. The crowd was not unmanageable inside the cordon as the government tries to make us believe,' he said. Das also alleged that the process was deliberately delayed. 'I have heard that a VIP is visiting Puri tomorrow. The administration may give any reason, but this is what I have heard,' he said. Former OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik also demanded that Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb should apologise before Lord Jagannath for the lapses.
