He went missing on the night of June 28. Three days later, he was spotted near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar, around 3km away. However, by the time the family arrived there, Kalu had vanished.
Kalu's owner, Kusuma BH, a govt employee, her daughter Harshita, a doctor with the Indian Army, and son Bharat are making painstaking efforts to trace him.
Kusuma has announced a reward of Rs 15,000 for anyone who helps in tracing Kalu.
Over 500 handbills, featuring Kalu's picture and Kusuma's contact number, have been pasted on walls and distributed among the residents of Basaveshwaranagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar and surrounding areas. "Besides, we've taken to social media, seeking help from netizens. But as of now, we haven't heard anything about him," said Kusuma, who works for the public information office.
Interestingly, Kalu was found in the hilly terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking to TOI, Kusuma said her daughter Harshita found him in Dec 2023. "Harshita was working with the army and camping on a mountain. One day, she found four puppies there. They were weak and suffering from some infections. She brought them to her camp and, with the help of a veterinary doctor, nursed them. Unfortunately, three of the puppies died while Kalu survived," she said.
Harshita and Kalu grew fond of each other.

"It was she who named him Kalu during her stay in Arunachal Pradesh," said Kusuma.
Later, Harshita was transferred to Guwahati, and then to Belagavi in Karnataka this year. "Kalu lived with her in Guwahati. However, she found it difficult to look after him in Belagavi. In Nov 2024, Kalu came to our house here," Kusuma said.
According to Kusuma, Kalu goes out for a short walk every night after dinner. "On the night of June 28, he went out but failed to return.
Seeing the handbill, a person called us on July 1, saying he had seen Kalu near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar. Filled with hope, we rushed to the place, but he had gone by then," she said.
Harshita was in Arunachal Pradesh when Kalu went missing. "We hadn't told her about Kalu's disappearance. After searching for two days, I posted his picture in our family WhatsApp group, and Harshita learned about the situation. She took a flight to Bengaluru. I search for Kalu from 5am to 9am, as I have to go to office. But Harshita searches for him all day and returns home late at night," she said.

He said in a low voice, 'I didn't take them.' That was the last thing he told me.' The Tamil Nadu government has provided the family with Rs 5 lakh compensation, a house site patta, and a government job. Naveen, who has completed his ITI, has been appointed as a technician at AAVIN, the state milk cooperative. Following massive outrage by opoposition, Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a CBI probe. Actor-politician Vijay also met the grieving family, expressing support. Five policemen have been arrested in the case.

Smuggling bids foiled Narcotics, exotic wildlife, gold worth over Rs 11 cr seized in a day at Mumbai airport
Multiple smuggling attempts were thwarted and four persons were arrested at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport on Saturday by Mumbai Customs officials, who also seized items worth over Rs 11 crore that included nearly 10 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, exotic wildlife species and gold. According to Customs officials, they acted on specific intelligence and intercepted an Indian national who arrived from Bangkok. A thorough examination of the passenger's checked-in baggage revealed 9.662 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, a high-grade variant of cannabis, with an estimated value of Rs 9.662 crore in the illicit market. The passenger was arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. In another incident, a passenger from Bangkok was arrested for carrying several exotic and non-native species — both alive and deceased — concealed in his bag. The recovery included raccoons (Procyon Lotor) one alive, 3 dead; black fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) 3 dead, and green iguanas 29 alive, 8 dead. The live animals were handed over to airline staff for deportation to their country of origin. Legal proceedings were initiated against the arrested passenger under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and the Customs Act, 1962. In other two separate cases, two passengers from Dubai were found smuggling 24 KT gold in dust form hidden in wax and as small gold pieces weighing a total of 1.650 kg and valued at Rs 1.49 crore. The gold was hidden in their body cavities and inner pockets. Both were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.

Madhya Pradesh cop earned Rs 28 lakh in 12 years without doing duty. Here's how
In a staggering case of departmental negligence and systemic failure, a police constable from Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district managed to draw a salary of Rs 28 lakh for 12 years without ever actively serving in the constable was recruited into the Madhya Pradesh Police in 2011 and initially posted to Bhopal Police Lines. Shortly after joining, he was sent for basic police training at the Sagar Police Training Centre, as was standard for his batch. But instead of reporting there, he quietly returned home to Vidisha, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ankita than alerting his superiors or seeking leave, the constable sent his service record back to Bhopal Police Lines via speed post. The documents were received and accepted without any verification of his physical presence or training status, the ACP said. No one at the training centre flagged his absence and no one at Bhopal Police Lines questioned it months passed and then years, the constable never reported for duty. Yet, his name remained active on the rolls and his monthly salary was credited without fail. Over time, he quietly amassed more than Rs 28 lakh without stepping into a police station or training was only in 2023, when the department began pay grade evaluation for the 2011 batch, that the anomaly came to light. Officials couldn't locate the constable and no one in the department recognised his name or face. During the internal inquiry, officials attempted to trace the constable's past records and service returns, but found seemed implausible that someone could have been on duty for 12 years and not been assigned a single case or involved in any official the constable was finally summoned for questioning, he claimed he had been suffering from mental health issues, said ACP Khaterkar. He submitted documents to support his claim, stating that his condition had prevented him from attending duty all these senior officers were alerted to the case, the matter was handed over to ACP Khaterkar, who is posted in Bhopal's TT Nagar area for an investigation."The constable in question joined the police force in 2011. Although, he was supposed to be sent for training along with the rest of his batch, he cited personal reasons and was allowed to go separately. While, the others completed their training and returned, the constable never reported. Since he went alone, there was no return record maintained for him," ACP Khaterkar told India Today TV."Despite never completing his training or joining active duty, his name continued to be reflected in police records as a newly-appointed constable. He remained on the rolls and his salary was credited regularly every year. The issue came to light when, 12 years later, his records were reviewed as part of a time-bound pay grade evaluation," she his defence, the constable argued he was unaware of the updated police rules at that time and claimed that lack of communication and his health issues kept him from far, the constable has returned Rs 1.5 lakh to the department and agreed to repay the remaining amount through deductions from his future salary. He is currently posted at the Bhopal Police Lines and remains under watch, the ACP said that the inquiry was still ongoing and more testimonies will be recorded.
