If you happen to be looking for a little speed reading ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 racing season, you should check out The Grand Prix Year: An Insider's Guide to Formula 1 Racing.
The recently released 272-page book, put out by London-based Bloomsbury Publishing, is the first from Autoweek contributor and F1 beat writer Phillip Horton.
The book takes readers on a yearlong journey along with the F1 circus through the eyes of a writer who knows the ins and outs of the paddock. It includes a chapter on each stop on the F1 calendar and can best be described as part diary, part Formula 1: Drive to Survive—the popular Netflix docuseries that has helped fuel fan interest in F1 here in the United States.$22.58 at amazon.com
Horton said the idea for the book came to him during the 2022 season, when F1 returned to its own crazy form of normal following the pandemic.
"It was in Mexico in 2022 where I'd realized that in the past four or five weeks our schedule had taken us to Singapore, Japan—where we hadn't been since 2019—then very briefly back home to the U.K., then to Austin (Texas), and to Mexico City," Horton says. "It was the first time they'd been properly 'normal' in three years.
"It's such a whirlwind of different places and experiences in such a short spell of time, and yet sometimes we normalize it—but it really isn't, and I'm not sure that comes across in much coverage or on TV.
"Formula 1 had also evolved quite a bit pre- and post-pandemic, and again Austin was a prime example given how Formula 1 grew in the United States, and I began having the idea of a book on the entire season, but specifically a journey through the entire season with each Grand Prix as a chapter, while also looking at everything that gets the sport motoring around the world."
Horton has been covering F1 full time since 2014 and has attended about 130 races. And that, racing fans, is a lot of frequent-flier miles and sometimes questionable meals in media centers all over the planet.
As a credentialed journalist, Horton is able to take readers behind the curtain and into areas of the paddock normally reserved for the top tiers of race-weekend pass holders.
"Fortunately, being part of the traveling circus, there's a level of access, as well as just firsthand experience of going to these places and exploring aspects beyond the racetrack," Horton says. "That's always interested me—the people, the culture (and the food!), and the history of a city or a country.
"I think when you're lucky enough to experience so many different places, you can't afford to miss out on what they have to offer—even though plenty of people who work in and who cover the sport will just be in a routine of airport-hotel-track.
"For example, Suzuka and Austin are both fantastic places and events, but they're so different. Each have a different fan base, vibe, and traditions, and yet they can be part of the same world championship."

F1 champion Max Verstappen says he's staying with Red Bull team for 2026

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen says he is staying with the Red Bull team for next year, ending months of speculation over his future. 'For me, it's always been quite clear, and also for next year," the four-time champion said Thursday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. "I'm discussing with the team already the plans — the things that we want to change for next year, so that means that I'm also staying with the team for next year.' Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull through 2028. At recent races he had deflected direct questions about whether he'd stay with the team next year, and there had been indications that a performance-related clause could allow him to exit the contract earlier. The exact details of any clause are not public. Mercedes driver George Russell had said he believed his team was holding talks with Verstappen. Verstappen's comments come less than a month after Christian Horner was removed from his role as Red Bull team principal after 20 years and replaced by Laurent Mekies. ___ AP auto racing:

More than 56,000 Ford trucks recalled over seatbelt issue

More than 56,000 Ford vehicles are being recalled due to an issue involving seatbelts, federal safety regulators reported this week. In a Wednesday, July 30, letter to the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the vehicle's audible warning chime may not activate when a driver or passenger's seat belt is unbuckled and the vehicle is started. The vehicle's failure to ping passengers when their seatbelt is not fastened can increase a person's risk of injury or death if a crash takes place, according to the NHTSA. Ford reported it is not aware of any accidents or injuries connected to the faulty seat belt systems. Here's what you need to know about the vehicle recall published by the NHTSA: Is your car on the list? Ford has issued over 30 recalls since late May. What Ford model is being recalled? Ford is recalling certain 2025 F-150 hybrid vehicles. There are potentially 56,473 vehicles impacted. The affected vehicles are equipped with the 3.5L Hybrid Electric powertrain, according to the report. LeBron James and Maverick Carter meet with Nikola Jokic's agent about starting a new league

A proposed international league described as the F1 of basketball gained attention over the weekend when Misko Raznatovic, the agent for Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, posted a photo on Instagram of him meeting in shorts and bare feet with LeBron James and the Lakers star's business partner Maverick Carter on a yacht off the coast of the French Riviera. Raznatovic accompanied the photo with an intriguing comment: 'The summer of 2025 is the perfect time to make big plans for the fall of 2026! @kingjames @mavcarter The post triggered speculation that perhaps James and Jokic could team up on either the Lakers or Nuggets, but more likely it suggests James has more than a peripheral interest in the new league. Front Office Sports reported in January that Carter was advising a group of investors trying to raise $5 billion to jump-start the league but that James wasn't involved. That may have changed. So what's the league about? Early discussions are of a touring model with six men's and six women's teams playing in eight cities, none of which are likely to be in the United States. Investors include the Singapore government, SC Holdings, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, a Macau casino operator, UBS, Skype founder Geoff Prentice and former Facebook executive Grady Burnett, according to the Financial Times. Reports have linked VC firm Quiet Capital, tech investor Byron Deeter and Hong Kong-based Galaxy Entertainment to the effort. Investors are leaning toward not allowing players in the league unless they cut ties with the NBA, making the model somewhat like LIV Golf — the professional circuit funded by (PIF). A better comparison in terms of format and scale might be Formula 1 Racing, which holds 24 races a year across five continents. Raznatovic's involvement would be key. His Belgrade, Serbia, agency BeoBasket has a partnership with Excel Sports Management and represents dozens of top European players, including Clippers center Ivica Zubac. The EuroLeague is currently recognized as the world's second-best basketball circuit, but can't come close to paying players NBA-level salaries. If Raznatovic's social media post is an indication, the new league could launch as soon as the fall of 2026. Until then, fans wanting an alternative to the NBA can check out Ice Cube's tour-based Big3 basketball league, which makes its single stop in Los Angeles on Aug. 9. The LA Riot, coached by Nick Young and starring Dwight Howard and Jordan Crawford, will play the Boston Ball Hogs at the Intuit Dome at 1 p.m. PDT.
