Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 breaks pre-order record
If you actually meaningfully upgrade a device over its predecessors, a lot of people will want it - who knew? This is the lesson Samsung has now learned with the Galaxy Z Fold7.
After many years of coasting by and allowing Chinese foldables to beat its top of the line offering in a lot of areas, Samsung actually tried this year with the Fold7 - and succeeded. The company has now announced that the phone has broken the pre-order record in the US. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7
Samsung has seen the highest number of pre-orders ever for a book-style foldable. Pre-orders jumped more than 25% over last year overall, while carrier partners saw an even more massive 60% jump cumulatively for the Fold7 and Flip7.
The duo became available last week, and in the first week of availability orders have continued to outpace the previous generation by more than 25% combined. The Fold7 is actually outperforming its predecessor by nearly 50%. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7
Interestingly, the Blue Shadow colorway made up nearly half of the Fold7's pre-orders, which proves to Samsung that people don't just want black and silver foldables. As for the Flip7, the Coral Red colorway has exceeded expectations, making up 25% of pre-orders. These color trends "are remaining steady through the first week of availability", Samsung says.

Today, it's gone one step further, being listed by a European retailer. The Galaxy A17 4G costs €289.90 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and will be offered in black, gray, and light blue. There should be lower-end options too, with less RAM and storage, by the way. The Galaxy A17 5G is listed at €319.90 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and this one comes in black, blue, and gray. Clearly these are not exhaustive listings though (once again, keep in mind that there will most likely be other RAM/storage combos on offer as well), so we assume more colors could also be launched. According to past rumors and leaks, the Galaxy A17 5G will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 1380 SoC, and will have a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 25W wired charging. It will run Android 15 when it launches, with One UI 7 on top. Its screen could be a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution, while for cameras expect a 50 MP main with OIS, a 5 MP ultrawide, and a 2 MP macro. This is the shocking price Apple pays for Trump's tariffs
Apple might be ready to pay big for AI companies, but it's already spending a lot on Trump's tariffs. During the company's latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that tariff spending could surpass $1.1 billion during the September quarter. In March 2025, during the previous earnings call, Cook predicted that Apple would spend $900 million on tariffs in the quarter that ended in June. On yesterday's call, he said that the company has spent around $800 million during the June quarter and expects a cost of over $1 billion in the current quarter, reports The Verge. That would add an extra $1.9 billion spent on tariffs in only six months. Most of the iPhones sold in America are manufactured in India, while Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches are made in Vietnam, according to Tim Cook .Earlier this year, Trump threatened to impose a 'tariff of at least 25%' on every iPhone not built in the US. The president has long been pushing Apple to move some of its production to the US. Tim Cook was careful to clarify that the predictions might be imprecise. He stressed that 'many factors could change, including tariff rates.' Recent rumors claimed that Apple is planning to increase the price of all iPhone 17 models by $50. The company's goal would be to offset the added cost caused by tariffs. While Samsung hasn't been mentioned by President Trump, it's also being affected by tariffs, albeit not as heavily as Apple. Samsung moved the production of its Galaxy phones out of China long ago. Apple's stellar financial results are proof that tariffs and the related price increases are unlikely to affect the company. Given how long the iPhone's price has remained practically unchanged, I don't think a $50 increase would scandalize anyone. Unless tariffs spiral completely out of control, Apple should be fine. The company sells tens of millions of iPhones per quarter, so the modest increase wouldn't only offset the $2 billion bill but also turn it into a profit gain. That's why I wouldn't worry about Apple.
