The San Diego Padres desperately need to add an outfielder to fill the massive void in left field. They've been closely linked to a trade for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, but no deal has come to fruition to this point.
Still, it seems like the Padres have been all in to land Duran. He would come with All-Star potential and team control on his contract, two things the Padres desperately need.
While the Padres have stayed closely linked to Duran, USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently suggested the Red Sox had no plans of trading the All-Star outfielder in the coming days.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox bats in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox bats in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois."The Boston Red Sox have no plans to trade outfielder Jarren Duran at the deadline, rejecting the San Diego Padres' offers, and are more likely to move him this winter," Nightengale wrote.
This report is a crushing blow to the Padres and their fans. Adding Duran would have been the perfect deadline addition for the Padres to make as they try to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers in the loaded National League West.
San Diego could still pursue a trade for Duran in the offseason if it wants to. But for now, the front office will need to pivot to a different option.
Luis Robert Jr. and Adolis Garcia are two change-of-scenery candidates the Padres could pursue. Neither guy has been great this season, but it would be a lot more affordable to trade for one of them than Duran.
Either way, a trade needs to be made in the coming days. The Padres need to find a solution for the biggest hole on their roster.

Watch: Chet Holmgren posts offseason workout video

As the summer temperature rises, the NBA calendar slows down. Almost August, we've reached the driest part of the year. The league has gone on vacation. All the major offseason moves have been made, with most front offices happy with how their rosters look. The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their NBA championship. Most of the partying has happened over the past month. With training camp two months away, they hope impressive continuity helps their chances of being a rare repeat winner next season. If Chet Holmgren can return to his pre-injury form, that'll be a huge plus. He was on his way to a likely first-time All-Star bid before he suffered a Nov. 2024 hip fracture that cost him three months. The 23-year-old figured out how to drive to the basket and create his offense. Pair that with special rim protection, and you have one of the best young centers. While Holmgren helped the Thunder win the Larry O'Brien trophy with great individual defense, you couldn't help but notice how much his scoring production dipped. His efficiency sank below the floor for a center. He couldn't buy an outside bucket. Now, with an offseason removed from his hip fracture, the Thunder hope Holmgren can return to the star trajectory he was on. The seven-footer posted on social media some of his offseason workouts. In the quick video, you can see him work on his handle and finish through contact. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams received all the flowers for being 20-plus point scorers, Holmgren is not too far behind. Only injuries have limited his ascension. If he can have a healthy fourth season, he can show why those who doubted his contract extension were foolish to do so.

Cubs Pitching Target Seth Lugo Signs Multi-Year Extension With Royals

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It's back to the drawing board for the Chicago Cubs for their starting pitcher acquisition at the trade deadline. In a shocking update, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported Sunday night that the Kansas City Royals have signed Seth Lugo to a multi-year extension. BREAKING: Right-hander Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multiyear contract extension, sources tell ESPN. One of the best potential trade candidates this deadline season -- and top free agent arms this winter -- instead will remain in Kansas City. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 28, 2025 The details of the extension are unknown at this time, but the Cubs now have to figure out where to pivot next. Pitchers such as Sandy Alcántara, Edward Cabrera, Mitch Keller, Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly come to mind as the new targets for the Cubs. Heading into Thursday's deadline, Lugo was one of the most highly sought after pitchers. Teams were drawn to him based on the fact that he would be a rental and require less of a return to go back to Kansas City. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 23: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals delivers a pitch against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 23: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals delivers a pitch against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2025 in Chicago, starting pitching market was already thin, and eliminating Lugo from the market makes it even thinner. Teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins now know they can ask for even more in this sellers' market. Adding to the rotation has been a major need for the Cubs since the season began, and Chicago knew it was going to have to overpay for a starter at the deadline. The race in the National League Central is tight with the Milwaukee Brewers winning 15 of their last 21 games. The Brew Crew have made things tight heading into the final two months of the season. Pressure is now on Jed Hoyer and his staff to pivot as they know the Cubs need to add at least one quality starter or else it will be a very short postseason run, if one even happens at all.
