Former Texas A&M quarterback, Heisman winner ranked as top 10 college QB of all time

USA Today16 hours ago
A former Texas A&M quarterback who became the second Heisman Trophy winner in school history was listed among the best quarterbacks to ever play college football in a recent all-time ranking.
MLFootball's top 10 list placed Johnny Manziel at No. 6, above the likes of Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Andrew Luck (Stanford), Vinny Testaverde (Miami) and Dan Marino (Pittsburgh). The former Aggie star shaped the future of the program with his acts of magic on the gridiron, becoming the first freshman in college football history to throw for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.
Before he decided to play his collegiate career in College Station, Manziel was originally committed to the Oregon Ducks. After Kevin Sumlin was named the head coach and appointed Kliff Kingsbury as his offensive coordinator, the Tivy High School gunslinger brought his talent to Aggieland.
Although things started shaky in the program's first matchup as a member of the SEC against Florida, he quickly turned things around the next week against the SMU Mustangs by throwing for 294 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 124 yards and recording two scores on the ground.
That moment marked the moment that "Johnny Football" was born. The freshman shredded the league's defenses, including Nick Saban's Alabama team, marking Texas A&M's first win over the Crimson Tide since 1968. He finished his freshman campaign with 3,706 passing yards and 26 touchdowns through the air, while also scorching defenses on the ground for 1,410 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.
He became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy. He had a record-breaking performance with 516 total yards and four touchdowns in the Aggies' dominant 41-13 Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma.
Manziel secured his first-career 4,000-yard passing season as a sophomore in 2013 and was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. His outstanding speed, vision and ability to throw from any spot on the field made him a role model for the next generation of quarterbacks, but it also made many coaches across the country dread the Saturday when they had to play against him.
"He just stole a game against us in Oxford that I just will never forget. I mean, never," former Ole Miss and current Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said in an interview with Saturday Down South. "We had them beat, dead to right. They're inside the 5-yard-line, gotta go (99) yards. It's (third)-and-19. The things he did on that drive, you just kind of marvel at."
Regardless of the trouble Manziel got himself into off the field, he is one of the greatest college football quarterbacks in history. His groundbreaking achievements and style of play ushered in a new era of college football, while also setting a precedent for all future SEC quarterbacks.

Ohio State football coach Ryan Day rated among the best in 'College Football 26'

We know some of you already purchased the Deluxe Edition of 'College Football 26' and are already enjoying many of the features on the newest release of the game, and battling it out with friends and foes alike across the country. We're also pretty sure most of you visiting this homer Ohio State site are using the Buckeyes to dominate the competition. If so, then there's no doubt you've noticed some of the ratings now visible and available in the game, including where Ohio State ranks, who the top players are in the game, what Buckeye players are rated, and much more. One thing many fans may not know, however, is that the head coaches in the game are also ranked and rated, and that includes OSU head coach Ryan Day. But what does EA Sports think of Day? Coming fresh off a College Football national championship, you would expect Day to be highly rated in the game, and that's definitely the case. In fact, Day is rated as the third best coach in the game behind only Kirby Smart of Georgia and Clemson's Dabo Swinney. All three have a "prestige" of an A+, but Smart and Swinney both have an overall rating of 80, while Day has a rating of 72. Rounding out the top ten behind those three are Steve Sarkisian of Texas (68), Oregon's Dan Lanning (66), Penn State head coach James Franklin (64), Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman (63), Kalen DeBoer of Alabama (62), LSU's Brian Kelly (62), and Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss (61). Of note, Michigan man Sherrone Moore is nowhere to be found. I think there are a lot of folks around the country who would want Day over Swinney because it sure feels like the way things are going in college football has made him a bit of a dinosaur, but the Clemson head coach does have two national championships, so I guess that's the tiebreaker. Either way, Day continues to gain prestige and respect in coaching circles, the media, and yes, the virtual video game realm. Texas A&M lands commitment from the 2025 Big West Field Player of the Year

Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley is heading west to pick up a talented infielder out of Southern California. On Monday night, Maddox Latta confirmed via social media that he will be transferring to A&M. Latta should be an intriguing addition to the Aggie infield, where every spot is up for grabs—except third base, which is expected to be manned by Gavin Grahovac. 'Should be' is the operative phrase, though, as college baseball's schedule often clashes with the MLB draft. Just like Aggie fans had to wait for Ryan Prager's post-draft decision last season, the same uncertainty surrounds Latta. If he does make it onto campus, he brings immediate offensive output and speed on the basepaths. Last season, Latta started 53 of 56 games and posted a .978 fielding percentage, nearly perfect through the back half of the year. It was also his breakout year offensively, slashing .362/.486/.503—a significant leap from the prior season. His performance earned him 2025 All-Big West First Team honors, the Big West Field Player of the Year award, and a spot as a Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist. Latta would be a fantastic addition to the lineup, but Coach Earley and his staff will have to wait until after the 2025 MLB Draft for his official decision. Penn State Football Preview 2025: James Franklin is Better Than You Think - And His Nittany Lions Should Prove It

Are you ready to admit that James Franklin is a great college football coach? No? Is it because he hasn't won a national title? Is it because last year was the first time he got the Nittany Lions into the College Football Playoff? It doesn't matter how many football games a coach wins; everyone wants more. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN Penn State Offense BreakdownPenn State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season Haven't we all learned from the last few years how silly it is to jump all over coaches who win a ton of games, but haven't won it all?Remember that Jim Harbaugh guy? Everyone forgets that he was super-close to being launched/leave for the NFL in 2020 after years of making Michigan very, very good. And then what happened? That. Forgetting how the sausage was allegedly made, 30-3 over his last three years, three College Football Playoff appearances, and a national title. Ryan Day won an insane 80% of his games, but there was more than an insignificant chunk of the Ohio State base that put him on a flaming hot seat because he couldn't take the team to the next level. And then what happened? That. The Buckeyes won the national title, and no coach is even close to his current winning percentage of 87.5%. And James Franklin can't win the big been a rough run against Ohio State and Michigan over the last few years. You know who else has had a hard time against those two since 2021? Everyone, including Day against the and Penn State have lost eight games over the last three seasons. The combined record of those eight was 102-12, and all finished with 11 or more out the first year of 2014, when Penn State started the Franklin era under NCAA sanctions and was way-close to being hammered with some sort of coma penalty, and throw out the 2020 season that screwed up everyone, and 27 of 31 losses came to teams that won ten games or more. But you're still not happy. You still don't care about the 2016 Big Ten Championship, or the 2023 Rose Bowl win, or the two playoff wins and CFP Semifinal appearance last season, or the 2019 Cotton Bowl win, or the 2017 Fiesta Bowl victory. Okay …Other than Franklin, how many coaches still around who started in 2014 or earlier have won at least 70% of their games?Dabo. That's it. So I'll ask the same question I posed when everyone wanted Harbaugh sacked, and when Day was getting destroyed late last year. Who's this magical coach ready to step in and win more than 70% of his games over the next decade?(And unless your answer is Lane Kiffin, no, you don't have that guy.)But with all of that said, Harbaugh did come through and take Michigan to a whole other level. Day and his team were fueled by the screamy types and won a national title. This year, Franklin has the team everyone will have to chase. He has the experience, the team, the schedule, and everything in place to do nothing less than get back to the Big Ten Championship, get back to the College Football Playoff, get back to the semifinals, and this year, play for the national let's put it this way. The bar for Franklin isn't winning "the big one" after winning everything else. It's getting Penn State to The Big One in Miami Gardens on January 19th.
