Dagga trafficking on the rise in the Lowveld

Three officers – Sergeant Jabulane Mbuyane, Sergeant Solomon Mebo, and Constable Lavandre LaReservee – were arrested on June 10 for allegedly escorting a Toyota Corolla transporting 107 bags of dagga along the N4 near the Matsulu T-junction.
They appeared in court on June 12 and were each granted bail of R1 500. Their next appearance is scheduled for July 25. Two additional suspects, Joel Mamba (44) and Monica Zwane (34), are facing separate charges of dealing in dagga. Their bail application was heard on June 18.

Commenting on the arrest of SAPS members, the acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, stated:
'No one is above the law. If any member is found to be on the wrong side of the law, they will face the consequences – without fear or favour.'
On Friday, members of the Tonga Task Team under the Ehlanzeni District Police recovered 24 compressed bags of dagga during a high-speed chase in the Sibange area. The suspect fled on foot into nearby bushes after abandoning a grey VW Polo.

In a separate bust on June 10, two suspects were found transporting 660kg of dagga from eSwatini to Zimbabwe, concealed in 19 compressed bales with a street value of over R3m. This operation was led by ACS Security, in support of the BACSA E2 Mpumalanga Operational team. One eSwatini national was arrested, while the second suspect was later apprehended in Limpopo.
On April 14, a Barberton Agri farmer reported suspicious activity on the outskirts of his farm near the Kaapsehoop Road. Responding officers from Hi-Tech Security found no suspects on scene, but recovered 800kg of dagga.
Earlier this year, on January 28, during routine patrols, the White River Flying Squad intercepted two suspects in a white Toyota Quantum on the R538 near KMI Airport, discovering 50 compressed
bags of dagga weighing approximately 1 020kg.

On January 14, the police recovered 10 bags of dagga weighing about 270kg during a stop-and-search operation near Sheba Siding, Barberton. Officers had pulled over a white Isuzu bakkie travelling from Low's Creek.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson of the Mpumalanga police, said:
'We are concerned about the increased number of individuals dealing in dagga, particularly within the province. However, with continued efforts such as Operation Shanela 2, we are able to intercept traffickers. Stations where dagga was seized include Tonga, Wakkerstroom, Mayflower, and the Mahamba Border Post. Most of the dagga appears to originate from eSwatini. We are continuing our efforts and aim to dismantle these syndicates.'

'Acting on intelligence regarding a stolen vehicle travelling from Gauteng towards the Beitbridge border, the operational team consisting of Limpopo SAPS, ShadowSecure Security, Tshimollo Security and Investigations, and Tracker Connect kept strategic observation along the N1 route,' said Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba. The vehicle matching the description, a white Nissan Patrol V8 5.6, was identified and intercepted near Shell Ultra City within the Westernburg policing area. Mashaba said further investigations confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen in Brooklyn, Pretoria. At the time, Mashaba said the matter was postponed to allow for the profiling of the arrested man. He said police had established that Mlambo is a South African national. Earlier, IOL reported that the grey SUV that was driven by Mlambo in Limpopo was reported stolen in May, around Pretoria central. 'On Friday, 16 May 2025, members of provincial Flying Squad were busy conducting routine patrol duties when they received intelligence information about a grey Toyota Corolla Cross SUV vehicle that was reported stolen this month,' said Mashaba. 'The vehicle was allegedly travelling at high speed along the N1 South public road and was destined to be smuggled to Zimbabwe.' The police immediately commenced an intensive search for the stolen vehicle until it was positively spotted driving outside Polokwane. Police officers attempted to stop the speeding vehicle, but the driver refused to yield. 'A car chase ensued until the vehicle was intercepted at Nirvana robots. It was searched and police suddenly discovered a damaged tracking device removed from the vehicle,' said Mashaba. Speaking during a parliamentary discussion on the country's 2025 correctional services budget, Groenewald said the justice system was collapsing under the weight of overcrowded prisons, and bold ideas were needed. 'There are people sitting in prison for stealing food,' Groenewald said. 'Some wait up to three years for sentencing. Isn't it time we asked ourselves — should we bring back corporal punishment?' He was referring to more than 2,500 detainees who are stuck in prison simply because they can't afford a bail of R1 000 or less. These are often people accused of small, non-violent crimes. And they're part of a bigger crisis: South Africa has over 104 000 people in prison, in facilities built for far fewer. Beds are limited. Staff is stretched thin. And many of those awaiting trial don't need to be behind bars at all. But Groenewald's solution, physical punishment, has divided the country. For some, the idea is too close to South Africa's dark history. Human rights groups and political opponents quickly pushed back, saying the suggestion reminded them of the harsh justice handed out under apartheid, where the state used caning and other physical punishments as tools of control.' This isn't just about crime and punishment,' said a human rights lawyer. 'This is about dignity. This is about a state choosing whether to treat people as human beings or not.'The mention of corporal punishment immediately brought comparisons to apartheid's security forces, who were notorious for using violence under the name of justice.

Investigating officer links police officer's movements to teenager's abduction case

Image: X The investigating officer in the abduction case involving Kamogelo Baukudi has revealed that the movements of the SAPS vehicle that was issued to the policeman arrested for the teenager's kidnapping match those of the victim's car and places the 42-year-old officer at the crime scene. Baukudi, 19, went missing for 20 days last month. Nzima Adoons, the police officer who is facing charges of kidnapping and extortion, appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where his bail application was postponed to next Thursday, July 10. Last month, Adoons was arrested after the vehicle, identified as a white double-cab, used to abduct Baukudi, was linked to him. Baukudi, who has since been reunited with his family, was found alive in Wepener, Free State, last week after being abducted while being driven home from Martie du Plessis Special Needs School. However, during testimony before the court on Monday, the investigating officer revealed that the double-cab was assigned to Adoons at the time of the alleged abduction. "The description of the vehicle was given, and we know in most cases, even our supply chain knows which vehicles were allocated to whom on a particular day. This Toyota, as it was given, with dark windows that was identified as being from the anti-gang unit. A follow-up was made using the vehicle tracking system. Upon checking, all the GD6 Vehicles that we know about were also checked if they were never in that area, and there were no other GD6-type vehicles in the area," the officer told the court. Baukudi was rescued by the Free State police last Friday morning, after which five suspects, who have since been released, were arrested during the early morning operation. It is reported that the 42-year-old officer has been issued with a letter of intention for suspension for him to give reasons why he should not be suspended. "Your worship, as far as the documentation is concerned, it should be noted that this is not a suspension, but the intention for suspension. He should give reasons why he should not be suspended. The accused is invited to give reasons," said the State prosecutor to the court.
