CM, ministers, MLAs to camp in Delhi from August 5 to 7 to press for assent to BC quota Bills

The Hindu28-07-2025
In view of the inordinate delay in the clearance of the Bills passed by the Legislature paving the way for implementation of 42% reservation for backward classes in education, employment and political fields, the State government has decided to request President Draupadi Murmu for speedy clearance of the two Bills, which were awaiting her assent.
The State Cabinet, at its meeting here on Monday, decided that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues, MLAs, MLCs and senior leaders, would camp in New Delhi for three days — August 5, 6 and 7 — to meet the President and seek her cooperation in the passage of the Bills. Minister for Transport Ponnam Prabhakar told the media on the decisions taken at the meeting of the State Cabinet here on Monday.
The Cabinet held elaborate discussion on the modalities that should be adopted for ensuring the passage of the Bills and unanimously resolved to request the President for her consent to the Bills. The decision comes in the light of the deadline set by the Telangana High Court for conducting long overdue local body elections and the stoppage of Finance Commission grants to local bodies for want of elected bodies governing them.
The Cabinet had also decided to press for clearance of the Ordinance seeking removal of the 50% cap on the reservations, a decision taken by the previous BRS government headed by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao through an amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act in 2018.

Cong spl train to Delhi takes off with BC push for 42% quota

Hyderabad: A special train carrying over 1,200 Congress leaders and workers, including 200 Mahila Congress members, departed from Cherlapally railway station at 10 am on Monday, heading to Delhi with a single-point agenda — to demand 42% reservation for Backward Classes. Dominated by BC leaders from across Telangana, the contingent also included Reddy and other forward caste leaders, symbolically reinforcing broad-based support for the demand. The train, expected to reach Delhi by Tuesday evening, will take a slower route as regular services are being prioritised for clearance. TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakiti Srihari boarded the train but alighted at Alair to address a press conference. Ponnam, who came to flag off the rally, was unable to disembark at Cherlapally due to the surge of supporters crowding into his coach. AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, who joined the journey, is expected to get off at Nagpur. On Aug 7, the leaders plan to call on the President to submit a memorandum urging her to approve two key BC reservation bills and the ordinance to remove the 50% reservation ceiling under the Panchayat Raj Act, now pending with her office. Slogans demanding '42% BC quota' and 'BC empowerment now' reverberated through the Cherlapally station. Mahila Congress state president Sunitha Rao led the 200-strong women's group, saying, "Over 200 more women are expected to join us at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday." TPCC vice-president Nirmala Reddy said: "Being a Reddy, CM Revanth has taken the lead in conducting a caste survey and passing the 42% BC reservation bills. The BCs deserve this quota, which is justified by the data from the survey. We will not stop until it's achieved." Congress leaders hit out at opposition parties for their 'hypocrisy' on BC rights. Mahesh Goud, Ponnam, and Natarajan said neither the BJP nor the BRS has the moral ground to question the Congress's commitment to BC empowerment. "Why didn't the previous BRS govt conduct a caste survey or increase BC reservations?" asked Ponnam. "In fact, former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao slashed the BC quota from 34% to 23% in the last local body elections and imposed a 50% reservation cap under the Panchayat Raj Act," he said. "It was only after Rahul Gandhi demanded a caste census that the Centre agreed to consider it. Revanth has shown that a scientific caste survey is possible. Telangana now offers a model for the nation," Natarajan added. Revanth, accompanied by ministers and senior Congress leaders, will fly to Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day visit, concluding on Aug 7.

Low battery, higher prices? California targets AI-driven pricing; bill to ban use of phone data for secret hikes

Senator Aisha Wahab (Image credits: X @SenAishaWahab) A California lawmaker is leading a bold push to ban companies from using personal data collected from phones, laptops, and other devices to secretly hike prices- an AI-driven tactic increasingly under fire from consumer advocates and lawmakers alike. Senator Aisha Wahab, a Democrat from Fremont, has introduced legislation that would prohibit businesses from using AI to adjust prices based on information stored on customers' phones, laptops, or other hardware. The bill, which cleared the state senate in May, is now being considered in the Assembly. It is one of 30 AI-related measures introduced by the Legislature this year. Wahab cited findings from Consumer Watchdog showing that ride-hailing apps charged more to riders with low phone batteries. Another investigation by ProPublica found the test prep company Princeton Review offered more expensive SAT tutoring to users in ZIP codes with high Asian populations. 'Our devices are being weaponised against us in order for large corporations to increase profits, and it has to stop,' Wahab said during an Assembly committee hearing in July. Ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft have denied unfair pricing practices. Business groups, including the California chamber of commerce, and some Republican legislators are pushing back on the bill. 'This overregulation is impeding how we do business and how people want to do business,' said Assemblymember Diane Dixon, a Republican from Newport Beach. 'I just believe that the market resolves these issues.'

Commission report on Kaleshwaram will be tabled in the Assembly to decide future course of action: CM

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced that the report submitted by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose Commission, which inquired into the alleged irregularities and illegalities in Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, will be placed in the Assembly for a thorough discussion. The Chief Minister said the session of the legislature will be convened soon so as to elicit the views of all political parties on the future course of action that should be taken into the findings of the report. 'We will take views of all political parties. Leader of the Opposition K. Chandrashekhar Rao and his party can give their views on the report,' he said. Mr. Revanth Reddy was speaking on Monday (August 04) after the meeting of the State Cabinet which approved the Ghose Commission report. He lamented that the previous government headed by Mr. Chandrashekhar Rao shifted the location of the Pranahita Chevella project in the name of redesign and commissioned the construction of Medigadda Barrage against the recommendations of the expert committee. Two other barrages Annaram and Sundilla, forming part of the project, too developed cracks, he said adding the lopsided decisions of the previous government had resulted in damages to the project which was billed as lifeline for Telangana. He said the Congress government had appointed the judicial commission in line with the promise made in the election manifesto and the Commission conducted thorough examination of over 110 people, including Mr. Chandrashekhar Rao, then Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao and Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, before finalising its report. 'There are no politics in this. The Commission is an independent judicial body, not a government-manned one,' he said replying to queries on charges made by BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavita. He said Ms. Kavita ought to have represented her case to the Commission if she had any issues rather than criticising the government now. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka criticised the former Chief Minister and BRS president for misleading the Assembly with his claims on Kaleshwaram project. While suppressing the report of the expert committee against construction of the barrages, the previous government claimed that the project had approvals from the Cabinet and fulfilled all the requirements. 'It is the sole decision of the then Chief Minister to change the project site with claims that there is no availability of water at Tummidihatti. This was at a time when the then Union Jal Shakti Minister Uma Bharti approved hydrological clearance to Pranahita Chevella project on the ground that 205 tmcft water was available at Tummidihatti,' he said.
