Cheaper, closer, long overdue: PSM moots RM1m reward for Beng Hock's case

Rather than dangling RM10 million to hunt down a transnational fugitive, the government could begin closer to home and at just a tenth of the cost, suggested PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan.
He mooted offering a RM1 million bounty for information regarding those responsible for the death of former DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock, whose family has been denied closure for 16 years.

Applications for TVET programmes surge to 229,000, says Zahid

KANGAR: Applications to enrol in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes have increased significantly from 25,000 to 229,000 over the past two years, as of July 12, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the sharp rise reflected growing awareness among parents, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers, and those unable to pursue higher education about the advantages of TVET, particularly its potential for high-paying careers. "They found that TVET graduates can earn premium salaries, which are not bound by the government's minimum wage of RM1,700. Instead, earnings are based on the skills acquired. In fact, some courses, such as welding, offer a starting salary of RM7,500," he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Kangar Umno Division Delegates Meeting here on Saturday (July 26), which was also attended by Perlis Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozabil Abd Rahman. Ahmad Zahid, who is also National TVET Council chairman, said there are currently 1,398 TVET institutions nationwide, with strong demand for skilled labour, particularly from foreign direct investment companies operating in Malaysia. "We will continue to expand the number of places and courses offered to match the country's workforce needs. For example, many private TVET institutions already offer programmes in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and robotics. "We are confident the involvement of TVET students in these emerging fields is in line with the demand for skilled workers from international companies," he said. – Bernama

Country needs a constructive opposition, says Liew

ISKANDAR PUTERI: For the sake of democracy, DAP strategic director Liew Chin Tong hopes the country could have a constructive opposition. He said the opposition has failed to be a constructive check and balance for the government. Liew, who is also Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, said the opposition currently lacks clear direction. 'They need to decide whether they want to be a constructive opposition in Parliament or if they just want to play with issues and sentiments. 'So far, the current opposition has failed to live up to the expectation of a constructive opposition,' he said at a press conference here on Saturday (July 26). He said that for the sake of democracy, he hoped the country could have a constructive opposition. 'We hope that the opposition will be able to articulate policies, contribute to policy making and give good ideas,' he said. Liew said this when asked about the 'Turun Anwar' rally. When asked if his party remained supportive of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim amid the rally, he said they would. 'Of course, we are supportive of the Prime Minister, but I don't think I want to go into that," he said, adding that he would issue a statement on the matter later.

TVET applications surge to 229,000 as demand for skilled workers grows

KANGAR: Applications for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes have surged from 25,000 to 229,000 over the past two years, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced. The increase reflects growing awareness of TVET's career potential, particularly in high-demand fields like welding, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the National TVET Council, said the rise in interest stems from parents and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers recognising the financial benefits of vocational training. 'TVET graduates can earn premium salaries, not limited by the government's minimum wage of RM1,700. For instance, welding courses offer starting salaries of RM7,500,' he told reporters after officiating the Kangar UMNO Division Delegates Meeting. He noted that Malaysia currently has 1,398 TVET institutions, with strong demand for skilled workers from foreign direct investment companies. 'We are expanding course offerings to meet workforce needs, including AI, IoT, and robotics. Private institutions are already leading in these areas,' he added. - Bernama
