Rugby legend's heartbreak over wife's death as he reveals her poignant final act

Rugby legend's heartbreak over wife's death as he reveals her poignant final act The 'unfathomable' tragedy left the former British & Irish Lion 'utterly broken-hearted' Rugby legend Scott Hastings and his wife Jenny Hastings in October 2010 (Image: Daily Record/Sunday Mail) Scotland rugby legend Scott Hastings has opened up on the death of his late wife Jenny, revealing that he now swims every week at the same spot where she took her own life. ‌ Jenny, a 60-year-old mother-of-two, disappeared on September 3 last year, while swimming at Wardie Bay in Edinburgh where she swam regularly. She was reported missing, with a large-scale search immediately launched, but her body was recovered a few days later on what was the couple's 34th wedding anniversary. ‌ In a statement, Jenny's family said that she had struggled with mental health issues since she was a teenager, while she had been gripped by severe depression as an adult and had previously attempted suicide. ‌ A "broken-hearted" Hastings paid tribute to his wife at the time, saying: "She suffered for well over 20 years. She just got herself into a headspace and decided that was the best option, despite having had visits from doctors within 40 hours, and a mental health practitioner had visited literally hours before, but the trickery of the mind is so difficult. "I'm utterly broken-hearted, she was such a beautiful, loving mother, wife, sister and we miss her dearly. Suicide is preventable and for many, many years Jenny prevented suicide. Unfortunately, she worked out that she felt that she was doing the right thing.' Nearly a year on from Jenny's death, Hastings - who won 65 caps for Scotland and represented the British & Irish Lions on two tours - has opened up again on the tragedy, revealing he goes open-water swimming every Friday at the spot where his wife died. Article continues below "[It's] beautiful and calming," he told The Sunday Times, before admitting that his mind "wanders out to the buoy where she was". "She was a water baby,' he added. 'This time last year we were on a cruise in the Norwegian fjords. I swam in the sea with her for the first time. It was just exhilarating.' Reflecting on how the tragedy unfolded and revealing his wife's poignant final act towards him, Hastings said: 'When I arrived at Wardie Bay, I saw her bag was there, I saw the buoy, but I didn't see her. I knew she'd gone. ‌ "What more could we have done? There was a secrecy behind it. She carried out her plan. This was her wish. That I find very hard to come to terms with. "[There were] no notes or anything like that, but under my pillow she left a [self-help] book entitled Don't Worry. "She got all the charity bags and put all of her clothes in them — we didn't have to deal with it. "She was going to carry out her plan. It's unfathomable for us but it made total sense to her." ‌ Hastings - who is an ambassador for mental health charity Support in Mind Scotland - is now supporting his friend and former team-mate Iain Sinclair with a swim spanning the 60-mile Caledonian Canal, to raise money for mental health charities and other good causes. While he says that becoming an advocate for mental health has been part of the "healing process" for him, however, the 60-year-old admits the idea of growing old without Jenny "really upsets" him. 'The tragic thing is that I can't grow old with her,' he said. 'That really upsets me, because there was a life ahead of us, and she didn't see that. I miss her every day. Article continues below "We returned her ashes back into the water a couple of weeks [after her death], because that was where she wanted to be,' the former Scotland international added. 'I didn't have to identify her body, so my memory of Jenny is just this radiant, happy person. Yes, she struggled. But she was at peace in the water.'

Human trafficker pays back just £1 dirty cash after running sordid Glasgow prostitution ring

Donglin Zhang, who was part of an operation of Glasgow brothels, has settled proceedings against her to seize crime profits. A human trafficker who was involved in the operation of brothels from flats in Glasgow today agreed to hand over the nominal sum of pounds one to settle a proceeds of crime action brought against her. Donglin Zhang, 51, was jailed for eight years in 2022 for her role in a crime gang intent on exploiting women for prostitution. Following her conviction for trafficking and brothel keeping offences the Crown raised proceedings against her to seize crime profits. Zhang's counsel Paul Keenan told judge Lord Ericht during a brief hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh that a settlement in the action has now been reached. Mr Keenan said it was agreed that Zhang's benefit from general criminal conduct was £144,373.75 but the amount available for confiscation was nil. Advocate depute Alexander Sutherland asked the court to make a nominal confiscation order in the sum of pounds one against Zhang, who followed proceedings with the aid of an interpreter. The Crown can return to court to seek more if assets are discovered in future under such a settlement. Zhang, formerly of Leithland Road, Glasgow, was referred to in evidence during her earlier trial as "the female boss". She was involved in trafficking a young woman from China who arrived in the UK in September 2018 with the promise of employment. Her passport was taken from her and within weeks the woman, who could only communicate in the Mandarin language, was coerced into prostitution. Zhang told her that if she refused the sex work she would never get back to China. She worked as a prostitute almost daily from October 2018 until January the following year. Judge Douglas Brown, who earlier sentenced Zhang and three co-accused, told them: "All four of you were convicted after trial or pled guilty to the crime of human trafficking with a view to women being exploited for prostitution. This crime involves the deliberate degrading of fellow human beings." "It is a dehumanising experience for the victim in that she is deprived of the ability to act in her own interests and is valued not as a person but merely as a potential source of profit," he said. The judge told Zhang: "You were frequently referred to in evidence as the female boss and it was clear that you played a leading role in the criminal activity." Passenger causes a two-hour flight delay after being 'caught vaping in the toilet'

A young man caused a two-hour flight delay after he was escorted off a plane by six cops for allegedly vaping in the toilet. The 21-year-old was removed after being accused of committing an aviation offence. Footage of the incident was captured by fellow passenger Tristan James Walker captured after he claims the toilet smoke alarm was set off. The incident took place at Edinburgh Airport on a Ryanair plane heading to Alicante, Spain. According to Mr Walker, 39, the flight was set to depart at 9.45am only for it to be allegedly delayed due to staff sickness. After the alarm sounded, the pilot is said to have informed the 21-year-old 'vaper' he would be removed from the plane. Mr Walker said that at least six officers boarded the aircraft to remove the man, who was taken into a van. Police confirmed the 21-year-old was charged in connection with an aviation offence. The footage was captured on July 3. Mr Walker told Luxury Travel Daily: 'A young lad in a group happened to set the alarm off for apparently vaping. 'The pilot then came out after the air stewardess explained what happened, and then the pilot stated he would be removed from the plane. 'The young lad waited for over six police officers to come on board. 'He was taken off, he was very calm - didn't argue or anything, no drama. 'We then happened to bump into him on Benidorm's famous strip and he told us he just got a caution and was banned from Ryanair.' A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 7.55am on Thursday 3 July 2025 we were called to an aircraft at Edinburgh Airport. 'Officers attended, and a 21-year-old man was charged in connection with an aviation offence. A report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.'
