MCD completes pre-monsoon rainwater harvesting maintenance at city parks
Municipal Corporation of Delhi
's (MCD) horticulture department has announced the completion of pre-monsoon cleaning and maintenance of rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems across 394 parks in 12 zones.
This effort is part of a broader pre-monsoon drive aimed at recharging defunct borewells that were previously used for park irrigation.
"This is a cost-effective technique. Each rainwater harvesting system was constructed at a cost of Rs 15,000-25,000, using locally available and eco-friendly materials. The system consists of 5 feet by 5 feet by 5 feet pit dug around a vertical pipe inserted into the defunct borewell," an official explained.
Many borewells had become non-functional following directions from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) a few years ago.
MCD is now utilising these rainwater harvesting pits to bring them back into operation.
The vertical pipe is perforated to allow direct entry of rainwater. "It is wrapped in permeable geotextile fabric to prevent clogging, and the pit is filled with layers of charcoal and small to medium-sized gravel—materials selected for their excellent filtration and percolation properties," the official added.

"This initiative not only prevents surface waterlogging but also helps replenish the local water table. By adopting this simple yet scientifically sound method, the department has taken a significant step toward sustainable water management and urban climate resilience," the official further stated.
Looking ahead, the horticulture department plans to construct 115 more rainwater harvesting systems this year, employing the same low-cost technique using existing borewells. "We have identified sites for these new pits, mostly in parks. Approval has been obtained, and we aim to complete the work within the next one to two months," said the official. The corporation assured that ongoing rains will not hamper the progress of this work.
