Talks were held on Monday between Libyan officials and Bosnia's Ambassador to Libya, Senad Masović, focusing on activating a direct air route to facilitate official delegations and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The Ministry highlighted that this initiative aims to support trade, economic, and tourism exchange, as well as ease official visits between Libyan and Bosnian officials.
The meeting was attended by Abu Bakr Ibrahim Al-Touil, Director of the European Affairs Department, Nadia Mohamed Massoud, Head of the Southern Section, along with other officials tasked with managing Libya-Bosnia relations.
Both sides reaffirmed the deep historical ties between Libya and Bosnia, emphasizing the importance of resolving pending issues to unlock new opportunities for enhanced cooperation.
An official announcement regarding the launch of direct flights is expected following further consultations.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
Libya's economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya's economy.
The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.
The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges. Tags: BosniaCivil Aviationlibya

Belgassem Haftar Signs Deal to Renovate Benghazi Medical Campus

Belgassem Haftar, Director General of the Reconstruction and Development Fund, has signed a major contract with Ankamenia Construction Company to launch the renovation of the Medical Colleges Complex at the University of Benghazi. Ankamenia, one of Libya's leading construction firms, will carry out comprehensive maintenance and development works across the entire complex. The project includes the refurbishment of lecture halls, auditoriums, laboratories, activity centres, the main library, and all affiliated medical faculties. The agreement marks a significant step in the national strategy to upgrade Libya's educational infrastructure and modernise learning environments in line with international academic standards. According to officials, the initiative is part of a broader reconstruction plan aimed at revitalising critical public institutions across Libyan cities. The medical education complex, a vital hub for training healthcare professionals, is one of several priority sites targeted for renovation. Belgassem Haftar emphasised the importance of creating high-quality academic spaces that support both learning and innovation, especially in the health sector. He also praised the role of Libyan companies like Ankamenia in contributing to national development through local expertise and capabilities. This project is a continuation of efforts led by the Fund to restore and improve Libya's institutional infrastructure following years of conflict and neglect. It also reflects a renewed focus on education as a pillar of national recovery and sustainable growth. Tags: AnkameniaBelgassem HaftarlibyaReconstruction Fund

Italy to Provide Boats to Libyan Coast Guard to Curb Migration

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has commended Libya for its efforts in returning irregular migrants to their home countries, stressing the need to continue and strengthen bilateral cooperation. Speaking at a migration conference held in Tripoli on Tuesday, Piantedosi said Rome appreciates 'the significant efforts made by Libya since last year to repatriate irregular migrants,' especially through the operation of migrant shelters. He highlighted that 'bilateral cooperation channels are very important and must be maintained,' announcing that Italy is ready to deliver four inflatable patrol boats to the Libyan Coast Guard as part of recent joint agreements on border management. 'We recognise the great work Libya is doing to curb or prevent irregular migration by sea,' Piantedosi added. 'However, this year has seen a notable rise in the number of migrants reaching Europe via the Libyan route—particularly nationals from Bangladesh and Eritrea.' He expressed confidence that the partnership with Libya would yield 'practical solutions,' saying Italy's strategic vision aims to reduce migrant flows not only across the Mediterranean but also overland. The Tripoli conference brought together Libyan and European officials to address growing concerns over migration through North Africa. Libya remains one of the main departure points for migrants attempting to reach Europe, many of whom face dire conditions in overcrowded detention centres. Italian and EU support has increasingly focused on reinforcing Libyan border control capacity and improving conditions in migrant shelters—efforts that have drawn both praise and criticism from international human rights groups.
