SBWL clears key projects in Telangana, to open tiger cell
The 11kV power line and approach road proposal in Mulugu was rejected for its possible environmental impact. However, the Peddagutta Lift Irrigation Project in Nalgonda was approved by the NBWL. The board also discussed animal passageways for 22 rural roads—18 under the PMGSY and four under the Roads and Buildings department. A central team from the Ministry of Environment, NTCA, WII, and State Forest department will inspect the sites in August. Forest officials were directed to revise underpass designs based on wildlife presence.
Mobile towers cleared
The board approved 13 mobile towers proposed by BSNL and Airtel in forest areas. These were previously cleared by the NBWL in March 2025.
Standing committee formed
A Standing Committee of the SBWL has been officially formed through a March 2025 government order under Section 6A(1) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It will advise on conservation issues, review forest-impacting projects, and help plan protected areas. At least 50% of members must be present for decisions. It was also noted that revenue from forest and tiger reserve check posts is being deposited into Tiger Conservation Foundation accounts to support anti-poaching.

A tiger cell will be established at Aranya Bhavan to monitor tiger and leopard activity outside protected areas and track human-wildlife conflict in districts like Kamareddy, Nirmal, Jagtial, Eturnagaram, and Kinnerasani. A study was approved to assess heavy vehicle movement through Kawal Tiger Reserve, focusing on wildlife deaths, and environmental impact.

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary (ABWS) in Delhi's Tughlakabad area marked a successful turtle breeding by welcoming an Indian Flapshell hatchling. In a post on X, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, said, 'Encouraging signs from Delhi's wild heart. A turtle hatchling spotted at Asola Bhatti's Turtle Pond signals a breakthrough in our conservation journey. This season marks successful turtle breeding thanks to improved ecological conditions." The Indian Flapshell turtles are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The species is marked as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Located in the ecologically sensitive Aravalli Hills in Delhi's Tughlakabad, the rescue centre has seen a significant improvement in hatching success and turtle development following recent ecological upgrades aimed at creating a semi-natural habitat for the rescued turtles, the ABWS said in a statement. To enhance the habitat various efforts were made such as introducing sand beds to support natural nesting, maintaining optimal water levels during dry periods and adding large basking stones to mimic a turtle's natural environment, the statement said. The pond area has also been enriched with aquatic grasses and sloping banks to allow easy movement and resting for turtles, it read. A thick vegetation cover around the pond and a micro-ecosystem designed to resemble natural conditions have further supported breeding and nesting behaviour, the statement said. The rescue centre now stands as a model for turtle rehabilitation, with contributing significantly in the conservation efforts of freshwater turtle in the region, it added. PMC finally approves dog park in Kharadi
After more than two years of planning and two unsuccessful proposals, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally approved the development of a dedicated dog park on a 3-acre plot in Kharadi, bearing survey numbers 25 and 26. The civic body has been working to set up a dog park in Pune since 2023. The previous plans to establish such parks in Katraj and Baner were proposed but later dropped due to administrative approval challenges. Dr Sarika Funde-Bhosale, chief veterinary officer, PMC, said a letter has been given to the road, water supply, electric and building construction departments to start work on the development of roads, water supply lines and electricity lines and build a compound wall. 'The park will be equipped with pet-friendly features such as fenced play areas, walking tracks, shaded zones, drinking water points, and waste disposal bins. Other facilities like a jogging track, swimming pool, parking facility, playing instruments, grooming parlour and veterinary services will be made available at the dog park. However, the facilities will be made available in a phased manner,' said Funde-Bhosale. PMC in June 2023 decided to set up the city's first pet dog park on a 3.5-acre plot on the Katraj-Kondhwa Road. A budget provision of ₹1 crore has been made for its construction. The plot originally belonged to the PMC-run Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park (RGZP). The civic body had sought permission from CZA to use the land for a dog park. However, CZA on December 26, 2023, rejected the proposal, stating the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, prohibits zoos from housing domestic animals and pets within premises. Similarly, the civic veterinary department in May 2024 identified a 36,000 square feet plot in Baner to set up a dog park. The proposal for the same was sent to the municipal commissioner of PMC. However, the plot was later allotted to another department of PMC.
